Alright, 7 hours after the issue with the electrics was first noticed, the sparky finally sorted it. Apparently in our main connection box thing (the little black box that connects the main street wires to the house) had a lose connection inside. Apparently that can manifest as crackling in power points, lamps flickering, fire panels making grinding noises, emergency lights going on and smoke alarms acting funny. And, I'm going to sound like a houso here (interestingly, urgent after hours repairs in state care homes are handled by the housing commission maintenance people too), but that was absolutely cooked in the head

But goodness, I've always been taught to be like really scared of electricity which I suppose makes sense, but then the electrician is just plodding around with live mains wires and poking them with plyers. That definitely did reassure me that I would've been safe though

Also I need to be up in 6 hours, but naturally I'm here bitching on Lemmy about electricity instead of sleeping. Night peoples, and don't fuck with electricity, unless you're a confident sparky, in which case, poke away with plyers as much as you'd like!

That's good that it's all fixed now but seriously if your power board doesn't have a safety switch please get one that does.

Had a 10pm urge to strip my bed so I could have fresh sheets for sleep tonight. Exciting Saturday night being had.

Ahhh when the world is falling apart and nothing is going right - there's nothing quite like disappearing into an op-shop for a few hours and coming out feeling like a new person (or maybe that's just me...)

Was going back home after getting a haircut and saw the sad sacks screaming COVID is a scam and one said "getting the jab will kill you". Was in half a mind to say "I'm still alive mate" but then realised A) it's not worth engaging the fools and B) I'm super non confrontational.

On another note, my head feels cold now after the haircut.

Also, Queen Vic market is such a sensory overload!! Jeez

Back in melbs. I felt instantly sad. Despite tuning into my fave stations and patting the cat and getting that legendary 100kmh sign on Citylink.

That's no good :(

I think the thing I love most about steam trains is how much happiness they bring with them. The people on the train obviously tend to be fairly happy, but on top of that all the people lineside who waited half an hour to watch a train go past for 10 seconds are all happy too. Saw a bus driver in Ballarat who had pulled his bus over and stood in the doorway watching us go past. We also ended up in a race with a Frankston bound metro ok our way back and it was a constant cycle of them pulling ahead of us, then us overtaking them when they stopped. Most the usually depressed looking commuters had gigantic grins on their faces waving at us at we went past. Many old folks watched us fly by while (I presume) reminiscing about the days a steam train was not uncommon to see, as well as countless young'ns watching us go past too

Steam trains really are the best ^even if they do have a habit of starting bushfires ^

My kid has tonsillitis so we can't really eat anything she likes because that's not fair. We're having puffy dogs. She likes puffy dogs but can't have them. I'm going to make her potato and gravy instead.

She's changed her mind to scrambled eggs.

There was some lovely sunshine this morning, although it seems to be going away again now. I got a bit of gardening done - fertilising and pruning today. The apricot tree is covered with buds, hopefully that means it will be a good year for fruit. I'll have to actually net it, and not get too entertained by the lorikeet vs. wattle bird wars that break out to get any of the fruit for myself this year.

Now I have to go off to my dentist appointment. It's been a while, hopefully he does not want to do anything too dramatic.

Whether you belong to an organisation or not if you deliberately mow people down in your car you are a terrorist. Plain and simple.

[-] [email protected] 13 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I don't think I agree. In my understanding of the word, terrorist or terrorism implies some type of agenda or coercive purpose. If it's some mentally unstable person just doing it... just because. I don't think that's terrorism
Edit: note. Not trying to minimise what this person did, but I think it's a relevant and important semantic difference

[-] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago

Actually agree with this semantic difference. Terrorism is intended to produce terror - and imo should not apply to random violence with no apparent agenda whatever the triggering factor was.
Terrorism imo also includes gaslighting and domestic violence. It appears that the culprit was already known to the police for mental health issues. Carefully not specified by the cops. Criminal impulsivity is not the same as terrorism.

I have a problem with using the word 'terrorist' as a catch all term for 'nasty person'. See @force majeure122's comment below, which I agree with. Might as well call someone who cuts you off at the lights a child molester, which is apparently also becoming a catch all phrase for a nasty person too. Inaccurate (maybe), excessive and doesn't actually describe the nature of the offence all that well. Which I suppose name calling is supposed to do. Let's keep it accurate folks, or at least as accurate as we can given the limitations of the murdoch media.

I have almost regained all the feeling in my mouth after the dentist appointment. Had an early risotto for dinner, as I was unable to coordinate my mouth to eat lunch and was getting a bit hungry. Unfortunately the toothache is back too, and might hang around for a few days according to the dentist. Teeth are a really badly designed system.

Canโ€™t sleep. Shoveled potting mix into the rest of the pots and sowed the second lot of grass seeds as the first are finally sprouting. I didnโ€™t bother burying them at all, cbf soaking them, just a quick water and straight to the windowsill.

Iโ€™ll sort out the carrots and spinach tomorrow. I have perpetual spinach too which are a kind of beet grown for tops but not a spare pot for them

Has anyone ever put party pies and sausage rolls in the airfryer? I'm about to try it. ๐Ÿ‘ verdict very good.

[-] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

Certainly have. They'll be fine, but just be careful as since the air comes out from the top they can burn fairly easily
