Official Title of this Community: Ethnic Minorities and People of Color

Why is the title different?

We like to have fun here.

What is this place? A safe space for underrepresented peoples and peoples of color to talk, chill, and vibe.

What are the basic rules of the community?

  1. Follow Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines. Non negotiable. This is the bedrock and mods will make decisions with this always in mind.

  2. This community is for ethnic minorities and people of color. This is a safe space where such people can freely discuss their struggles, insight, and thoughts without fear. If you are not, we respectfully ask you do not post or comment here. A future community will be established to allow for racial discussions with a mixed userbase. However, remember, comments here must still respect Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines.

  3. Irony Racism is still racism. Racism is bad m'kay? We will treat irony racism and bad faith racist satire as racism. Will wield the ban hammer accordingly.

  4. No sectarianism: This is an identity channel not a channel for you all to complain about why XYZ isn't the "one true leftism". Take that to another place.

  5. Stupidpol is not allowed. Stupidpol is class reductionist. We are an identity community. Thinking like stupidpol ignores the struggles of the oppressed, their voices, and their need for unique support. Nothing says oppression more than someone saying that the identity you have is "not real" and that if you only thought like them you'd see what your "real" identity is. Mods reserve the right to ban users and content who promote stupidpol, stupidpol memes, and other class reductionist thinking.

FAQ

I don't look XYZ and/or sometimes I can pass as white so I don't know if I can post here. Can I?

What can I post?

With the birth name of Claudia Cumberbatch, Claudia Jones was born on February 21, 1915 in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad. She was a communist author, activist, and journalist active in the United States and Great Britain. She was imprisoned and deported by the U.S. for violating the anti-communist McCarran and Smith Acts.

Born in the British colony of Trinidad as Claudia Vera Cumberbatch, she later adopted the name Jones as "self-protective disinformation". She came to the U.S. as a child when her family migrated to Harlem.

Growing up working poor had a lasting impact on Jones; her mother died when she was twelve from work-related exhaustion and she herself caught tuberculosis at the age of 17 from poor living conditions, leading to lifelong lung damage.

In 1936, Jones joined the Young Communist League USA to help support the Scottsboro Boys, a group of young black men being subjected to a legalized form of lynching in the American South. Jones became a prominent author within the organization, editing its monthly journal "Spotlight".

As a member of the Communist Party USA and a feminist black nationalist, Jones' main focus was on creating "an anti-imperialist coalition, managed by working-class leadership, fueled by the involvement of women", and championed women's causes inside the Party.

One of Jones' best known works is the 1949 piece "An End to the Neglect of the Problems of the Negro Woman!". In the work, Jones shows an understanding of what would later be called "intersectionality", writing: "The bourgeoisie is fearful of the militancy of the Negro woman, and for good reason. The capitalists know, far better than many progressives seem to know, that once Negro women begin to take action, the militancy of the whole Negro people, and thus of the anti-imperialist coalition, is greatly enhanced."

Following a hearing by the Immigration and Naturalization Service, Jones was found in violation of the McCarran Act for being an "alien" (a non-citizen) who had joined the Communist Party, despite the fact that she had identified herself as a party member when completing her Alien Registration in 1940. She was ordered to be deported in 1950.

Before Jones could be deported, however, she was tried and convicted with eleven others, including her friend and communist of note Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, of "un-American activities" under the anti-communist Smith Act.

After serving several years in prison, Jones was released in 1955 and deported to the United Kingdom on December 7th that year. She immediately joined the Communist Party of Great Britain upon her arrival in Britain and remained a member until her death.

Jones continued her activism in Britain, campaigning against racism and sexism, speaking at trade union rallies, and visiting China, meeting with Mao Zedong. In 1958, Jones founded the West Indian Gazette, Britain's first major black newspaper, and helped organize celebrations of Caribbean culture that became the annual Notting Hill Carnival.

Jones died in 1964 at the age of 49. She is buried next to Karl Marx in Highgate Cemetery, North London.

"It was out of my Jim Crow experiences as a young negro woman, experiences likewise born of working-class poverty that led me to join the Young Communist League and to choose the philosophy of my life, the science of Marxism-Leninism - that philosophy not only rejects racist ideas, but is the antithesis of them."

Posting neat Chinese phrases whenever I feel like #17

彳亍

(chì? chù?)

Literally: “? ?”

Figuratively: “walk slowly”

All the dictionaries specify this as a literary word, because it kind of only makes sense in writing. Chinese characters are written in a square grid layout. 行 (xíng) means “go/walk”, and it takes 1 grid slot, but if you break it apart and fit it in 2 grid slots you get 彳亍, as if you were walking slower than just 行. These characters 彳 and 亍 aren't used elsewhere, except as abstract character components.

The phrase "it's easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism" was probably a lot more poignant when the end of the world didn't feel like an everpresent inevitability

Jesus Christ the people in corporate America are rapidly aging and the twenty and thirtysomething year old software engineers (and interns who can understand basic ETL tools) are the only ones holding companies together. I regularly communicate with people in their mid 60s who are living in 2003, and it is mind-boggling to see.

Longer I’m here, the more I get radicalized. I can see different people moving up the ladder and adopting the corporate lingo in real-time and completely toeing the line so they can get paid a disproportionate amount to “make the big decisions”

Motherfucker. Those decisions wouldn’t be possible without the people who built your Godamn software

So yeah, our corporate masters are getting just as geriatric as our political leaders because the latter who won’t and don’t need to retire made it so that the former can’t. Death to America

First ever formal first date down. it was decent, though i don't really have a basis of comparison - but they were sweet and smart and involved in some cool work. tbh they have the right politics to post on here so i dont want to be too oversharey with details lmao, though they didn't seem irony-poisoned/internet-ruined enough. hope they're down for a second date - even if it doesn't end up being a romantic fit it could be nice to have another irl friend-comrade.

People are being so silly about the new Avatar thing, like they did not remove Sokka's sexism because they don't understand story arcs and are too woke or whatever. It would be over the top goofy to have an adult actor do that "girls are icky" level stuff and actual age-appropriate misogyny would just make the character unlikable. It's not going to suck because of all the things they changed, it's going to suck for completely unrelated reasons.

It doesn't sit right with me that we're constantly deadnaming Spinoza. After he was expelled by the Jewish community of Amsterdam he took the name Benedictus (meaning "blessed" in Latin) rather than Baruch (meaning "blessed" in Hebrew). All his friends called him Benedictus. He was known as Benedictus de Spinoza in his own time. Why do scholars insist on calling him Baruch Spinoza? Kind of weird.

I was talking with someone about Vietnam (she'd never been) and I mentioned Ho Chi Minh city, which she immediately "corrected me" to Saigon. It caught me off guard how quickly she wanted to correct me despite never having been there.

I mentioned this to another friend and they acted like Ho Chi Minh personally killed their family. I'd like to share something, so anyone got any good material on Ho Chi Minh? Was digging through this old mega thread but maybe someone has something more? https://hexbear.net/post/112276

My grandmother has severe dementia and my mom goes to visit her every few weeks. My mom jokes a lot about it, says my grandmother is "still confused and silly", but it's clearly upsetting to her. She doesn't feel like she can show vulnerability to me, show that she's worried about her own mother, and that's upsetting. I want to help her

[Resume] Keyword Stuffing: What It Is And Why You Should Never Do It

I hate capitalism. Almost all of the arguments in there are bullshit. "It's unethical", 1) so is your process of automatically throwing away resumes that don't follow some bullshit resume metagame and 2) The keywords are relevant to me, it's not like I'm lying.

"DON’T USE WHITE FONT" but also "DON’T OVERSTUFF YOUR SKILLS LIST: I’ve seen horror-level amounts of skills in people’s resumes". Hmm, if only there was a way to provide a complete skills list to the automated system that you don't need to read thonk

"DO OPTIMIZE YOUR KEYWORDS: Pick 8-16 keywords directly out of the job description.", I don't have the time or energy to customize my resume to each job listing when it's 90% likely to just get instantly thrown away.

I hate the hiring process so much. And I'm not in need of a job, I would just like a slightly better one. I'm sure it's even worse for people who need to find a job, usually in a limited time frame.

I hate academia

I submitted some abstracts to present my research at conferences over the summer... One project got accepted for a 3-minute talk (I applied for the 10-minute talk), and another project got rejected. kitty-birthday-sad

Now I have to decide whether I fly across North America and spend $1k or more on flights and accommodations, just to give a 3-minute talk about a project I'm not that passionate about on the off chance I can network with a potential collaborator for a different project I could actually care about? It feels so wasteful.

... idunno. Just surprised about getting rejected. Feeling invalidated, like my research (which feels like an extension of myself / is uniquely my own) isn't valuable or worth showcasing.

I’m having a really hard time dealing with this shit. I keep having these episodes where I start almost hyperventilating and freaking out, sometimes I want to scream. I have to stop myself from screaming.

This pain is so fucking intense, and what makes it fucking worse is that nobody will fucking talk to me. The people who used to be my shoulders to cry on all just don’t reply or tell me to fucking move on.

Nobody fucking believes me when I talk about how much they mean to me. I know I’m not crazy but this shit makes me question that.

They won’t so much as fucking reply to a text and I know I need to get better before there’s any chance of them talking to me again (I had a meltdown and said a lot of extremely hurtful fucked up things, not to them thank God, the other day when they told my friend I need to move on; I almost did something really mean too: getting them kicked off the property where they have permission to park, point being yeah I really need to work on some shit) but it’s impossible for me to give a shit about life right now. If they said to my friend “Yeah maybe I’ll talk to them if they see a therapist and shit” I’d fucking do that in a heartbeat. I’d go to fucking rehab.

I can’t believe this shit is happening. I hate being alive. Fuck.

“For a foreign ministry to address a head of state from a friendly country in this way is unusual and revolting,” Vieira told reporters at the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro.

“It is a shameful page in the history of Israel’s diplomacy,” Vieira said, adding that Israel tries to create a smokescreen to cover up what is happening in Gaza. Brazil has recalled its ambassador to Israel and said that it will not be retracting Lula’s comments.
