Official Title of this Community: Ethnic Minorities and People of Color

Why is the title different?

We like to have fun here.

What is this place? A safe space for underrepresented peoples and peoples of color to talk, chill, and vibe.

What are the basic rules of the community?

  1. Follow Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines. Non negotiable. This is the bedrock and mods will make decisions with this always in mind.

  2. This community is for ethnic minorities and people of color. This is a safe space where such people can freely discuss their struggles, insight, and thoughts without fear. If you are not, we respectfully ask you do not post or comment here. A future community will be established to allow for racial discussions with a mixed userbase. However, remember, comments here must still respect Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines.

  3. Irony Racism is still racism. Racism is bad m'kay? We will treat irony racism and bad faith racist satire as racism. Will wield the ban hammer accordingly.

  4. No sectarianism: This is an identity channel not a channel for you all to complain about why XYZ isn't the "one true leftism". Take that to another place.

  5. Stupidpol is not allowed. Stupidpol is class reductionist. We are an identity community. Thinking like stupidpol ignores the struggles of the oppressed, their voices, and their need for unique support. Nothing says oppression more than someone saying that the identity you have is "not real" and that if you only thought like them you'd see what your "real" identity is. Mods reserve the right to ban users and content who promote stupidpol, stupidpol memes, and other class reductionist thinking.

FAQ

The Nashville Sit-Ins were among the earliest non-violent direct action campaigns that targeted Southern racial segregation in the 1960s. The sit-ins, which lasted from February 13 to May 10, 1960, sought to desegregate downtown lunch counters in Nashville, Tennessee. The protests were coordinated by the Nashville Student Movement and the Nashville Christian Leadership Council (NCLC), primarily consisting of students from Fisk University, Baptist Theological Seminary, and Tennessee State University. Diane Nash and John Lewis, who were both students at Fisk University, emerged as the major leaders of the local movement.

On February 13, 1960, twelve days after the Greensboro, North Carolina sit-ins began, Nashville college students entered Kress (now K-Mart), Woolworth’s, and McClellan stores at 12:40 p.m. After making their purchases, the students sat down at the lunch counters. Store owners initially refused to serve the students and closed the counters, claiming it was their “moral right” to determine whom they would or would not serve. The students continued the sit-ins over the next three months, expanding their targets to include lunch counters at the Greyhound and Trailways bus terminals, Grant’s Variety Store, Walgreens Drugstore, and major Nashville department stores, Cain-Sloan and Harvey.

The first violent response to the protests came on February 27, which James Lawson, Jr., another protest leader called “big Saturday.” The protesters that day were attacked by a white group opposing desegregation. The police arrested eighty-one protesters but none of the attackers. Those arrested were found guilty of disorderly conduct. They all decided to serve time in jail rather than pay fines.

As racial tension grew in Nashville, Mayor Ben West appointed a biracial committee to investigate segregation in the city. Despite the committee’s numerous attempts at a compromise, the students declared that they would accept nothing less than the acknowledgement of their rights to sit at the store lunch counters along with white customers. On April 5, the committee suggested that the counters be divided into black and white sections. The NCLC and the Nashville Student Movement rejected the proposal, arguing that segregation of the counters was no better than black exclusion from them.

On April 19, a bomb destroyed the home of Z. Alexander Looby, the defense attorney representing many of the protesters. The bombing of Lobby’s home triggered a mass march to city hall where 2,500 protesters demanded answers from Mayor West. Diane Nash pointedly asked Mayor West if it was wrong for a citizen of Nashville to discriminate against his fellow citizens because of his race or skin color. The mayor admitted that it was wrong, giving the students an important symbolic victory in their campaign. Nash then asked the mayor if the lunch counters in Nashville should be desegregated. They mayor said they should.

After weeks of secret negotiations between merchants and protest leaders, an agreement was finally reached during the first week of May. On May 10, six downtown stores opened their lunch counters to black customers for the first time; the customers arrived in groups of two or three during the afternoon and were served without incident. With that agreement, Nashville became the first major southern city to begin desegregating public facilities. The Nashville campaign became a model for other civil rights protests in the 1960s and 1970s.

Going to talk about the US like how Americans talk about the Soviet Union and use "American" and "Californian" interchangeably. Following the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor, California entered the war... In 1981, the Californian president was shot... Trapped on the other side of the Iron Curtain and forced to conform with American ideology, Californian scholars were decades late to realizing the truth of Mayan hieroglyphs...

Sharing this video and the Hexbear link along with my comment on the post about it:

This, in my opinion, needs to be pinned (and spread/shared, and kept in a sidebar of resources of Palestine etc etc).

It's a full document of everything to do with the genocide in its first 100 days. It's from Oct 7 and goes day by day, with pictures and videos by news agencies and on the ground by Gazans (this is where the dead Palestinians come in). It shows the hypocrisy of the Western leaders side by side with what is happening at the exact moment. It shows the difference between Western journalists and Arab journalists. It shows Palestinian doctors and medics breaking down and crying, but also their incredible, incredible bravery. It shows Israeli politicians talking of using the nuclear bomb, and of starving the Palestinians. It shows the IDF bombing not just residential buildings every day but the people the bombings kill, the people who mourn, the people who try to rescue the survivors. It shows the hospitals, the mosques, the refugee camps. All while providing proper context needed per international law for war crimes, genocide, and what international leaders are doing/not doing. And, of course, what Israeli politicians are doing.

Again, the video is NSFW. The creator has not censored the videos. There are dead people. It is genuinely heartbreaking in a way I cannot communicate. It is not every day of the conflict - a lot of the times it is just buildings being destroyed but those buildings have people in them, and often enough in the following days you will see dead people, including children.

I wouldn't have shared it if I felt it was just atrocity propaganda. But I've followed the creator for a while. They always make good videos. And, as I stated above, in this one too, they don't just show video after video, but put in effort to show how and why Israel lies, commits war crimes, US enables it etc.

This morning I was talking nostalgically about a favorite board game I lost in a move and told my boyfriend "I swear to you I'm going to buy or make a set this March so you don't have to keep listening to me wax on about it." He got super flustered and I was really confused but then he told me he was going to get me a set for my birthday as a surprise and then swore me to forget he told. It made me really happy!

In Fediverse news, the Taliban has apparently assumed control of the .af TLD, and some Fediverse instances (notably queer.af) are having their domains revoked.

I'm not sure if this is specifically an anti-LGBT thing or if it is their desire for the .af TLD to be used more exclusively for Afghani organizations. According to Ghandi (a domain registrar used by queer.af and many other websites), they are no longer accepting any registrations, renewals, or transfers for any .af domains. Alternately, it could be a sanctions thing where it is not "practical" for western registrars to conduct business with or make payments to Taliban-controlled state institutions.

At times like this, I'm very thankful I opted to go with a reputable TLD like .dog

Fun web activity for you to try:

Download an image from a webpage you like and check that image's EXIF metadata to see if the uploader doxxed themselves when their camera automatically inserted their location into the image metadata, especially if they took it at home

All my comrades remember to run exiftool -all= on all the images they upload (although at least Hexbear something similar automatically for you if you didn't)

DM me and I'll tell you about a certain online right-wing community whose users are continually doxxing themselves because they and their website don't remove EXIF metadata :3

While misinformation is bad, it's kinda surreal to see journalists pearl-clutch over it when they very regularly publish stuff that's easily verifiable and falsr. I don't even mean they're going to poor sources (but that is obviously an issue), I mean how many times are journalists going to publish "X scores higher on an IQ test than hawking and einstein" before googling whether hawking or einstein have ever taken an IQ test. They have not, and even if they had IQ tests realistically give a rough estimate rather than precise value, and have specified upper bounds for tests beyond which they're useless.

How to argue on Wikipedia:

Step 1: Open up a new tab

Step 2: Type in Google dot Scholar dot Com

Step 3: Type your opinion in the search

Step 4: Copy/paste the first 4 links into the talk page discussion without reading those articles or anything the non-chuds are saying in the discussion.

Step 5: Whine about consensus even though you're in the minority

Coworkers arguing with me about flavor without knowing what they're talking about....

This meatloaf I made today called for a "supreme sauce" which was basically just soy sauce, red wine vinegar, tomato paste, and sugar. The recipe included ketchup but that's unnecessary imo when you're already adding the components OF ketchup. Tomato paste, sugar, red wine vinegar, the only thing ketchup would add is corn syrup. Gross. Skip.

So I make this sauce and two of my coworkers are insisting it NEEDS ketchup. I'm too busy to be fucked so whatever, they add ketchup to it. They still insist it's wrong. It's too tangy.

Bitch it's supposed to be tangy, that's what the vinegar is for! They say I added too much but, guess what, I cut the recipe way down because it was calling for soy sauce and vinegar in like a 5:3 ratio or something insane like that. Like 2.3 cups soy sauce to 1.6 cups vinegar. I did less than that

Anyway the supervisor ate it and said it's great and that they have little baby palates

I'm very distraught about the state of upcoming Indonesian election. I have very fond memories of Indonesia, as I traveled and volunteer there many times when I did my undergraduate wildlife research. Indonesia is the 3rd largest democracy in the world, but unfortunately the Leftist movement there is completely dead. Indonesian Communist Party used to be the 2nd largest communist party in Asia after China, but during a US backed coup in 1960s, the literal "Jakarta method" named after Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, a US-friendly military general took over and literally genocided almost all members of Indonesian Communist Party. This is akin to Pinochet takeover in Chile. But Chile managed to somehow recover from Pinochet, lift people from poverty, slowly reestablish their open democracy and leftist movement. Indonesia was on a similar trajectory (albeit slower) ever since the US-friendly military general was ousted because of the 1998 Asian financial crisis. But now a literal war criminal, former military general who had blood in his hands killing all members of Indonesian Communist Party is set to be Indonesia's next president. It's pretty gross.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 9 months ago

3rd largest democracy in the world

I agree with the rest but come on, America isn't democratic, India isn't democratic and Indonesia isn't democratic.

cooked wheat berries, tossed in olive oil with spices, to replicate loose ground sausage (I did some oregano, sage, thyme, rosemary, smoked paprika, cumin, and garlic powder). They add a tiny bit of chew the way sausage does
