reservations, like they've reserved spots for ads already? there's a finite amount of airtime so how can 'sure to even out' actually pan out, if not the republicans paying more for less?

Italians spell "gabagool" as "capicola".

this is a feature of Sopranesechrissy-explain

okay i've played it twice now so i don't have an exhaustive picture of the options, but my endings were both civil war and i even got a positive ending card on the short version (i pumped all my money into the paras), so i don't think the criticism that it's all about electoral politics 'working' necessarily holds up

you'd think bethesda just signing over the film rights would be an aesthetic thing but it's really at their level of eclectic nonsense at the expense of a world that makes sense and lived in

i won the SPD game, i started a civil war in 1932 with the KPD on our side, soviet assistance will surely clinch it.

the game appears to think this was not an ideal outcome

The pretentiousness is misleading and entirely the point

??? sequel to the comic book oscar bait film, putting french in their title because cinéma is actually just goofing and not trying to put on the taken-seriously

[–] [email protected] 3 points 6 months ago

i expect to have a riot laughing at the politics

[–] [email protected] 31 points 6 months ago

what does shutting down sex work and bars do unless children are at bars & doing sex work???? classic carceral thinking, making whatever processes/institutions that enabled this more oblique and underground than transparent

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 months ago (3 children)

puke. the singers & gaga gives me hope for a few musical numbers, but that's cancelled out by the fucking pretentiousness. you're making a movie about a comic book clown fuck off

[–] [email protected] 5 points 6 months ago (2 children)

this film is going to rule lmao

[–] [email protected] 11 points 6 months ago

al Mansur was really competent. perhaps the most competent of all the non-figurehead Caliphs

maybe i should play this to get a sense of this criticism, it sound interesting.

hoping for some basic, short answers from the socialist perspective before i have to look at big books like literally called "The National Question in Yugoslavia"

for context i understand basically nothing about post-ottoman developments in the balkans, so feel free to start with what the fuck a 'Yugoslavia' was supposed to be before socialism too.

stalin-heart thanks in advance you wise Hexbeariens

Pantjikent is in the Zeravshan valley, and served as a capital for sogdiana at a few points. notice the elements of buddhist, iranian, and turkic/chinese influence

i really hoped it was exaggerated but damn, comrades. this a british movie with british sympathies and unforgivably british casting

these fuckers didn't even try! yankee accents standing in for the french, i could accept, so long as they were different from the motherfucking english. but HALF of the french characters are fucking british?!?!?!

under spoilers for space, there is not anything to be 'spoiled' from this:

spoilercomically miscast historical personages who we've got dozens of portraits of:

Alexander of Russia, unaccountably not bald

Francis of Austria, unaccountably fat

Robespierre played by a man who was made to look exactly like Danton???

and the salt in the wound is of course, The Duellists. a film of infinitely superior historical calibre and consistency from the SAME fucking director.

character assassination of the Comité de Salut Public (typical of a fucking englishman)

caricature of both Thermidor and Brumaire, which you wouldn't think is possible as they were of utterly separate political persuasions, but of course they did that

a calculated removal of the Revolutionary Calendar

no effort whatsoever, in fact intentional mystification around the nature and sympathies of the imperial nobility, trying to play it like it was a return of the Ancien Regime

i did like that Talleyrand was shown to be a devil on the shoulder, but it was not treated with that he was a traitorous sleaze

finally, things i liked:

1792 issue french uniforms appeared in limited edition at Toulon

1798 issue austrian did as well, though apparently only for voltiguers/jaegers at austerlitz?

Thomas-Alexandre Dumas appeared in multiple scenes, but was not named which is super fucking awful

Josephine had a prominent role. and yes, we could do a whole additional post about how anachronistic the women's costumes were, but she generally looked very cute and i'm grasping at straws for things to appreciate here

i know a good number of us have been listening to Hell on Earth and while it's been a decent primer for the sequence of events---the takes are quite spicy for historiography heads

here are the questions for the class:

What is Feudalism?

When did Feudalism End?

Are they good, bad, ugly?

Paleo, Keto, Atkins etc. what's the deal? my instinct is they're all scams but i ain't no expert

i think a lot about just how many people fascism and the right are alienating and trying to oppress

and i really wonder if everyone else in history didn't have the same kind of sense. i dont think they did, but is that our 'enlightened' bias? did thomas mueztner expect peasant women to be an integral part of his peasant rebellion???

but anyway intersectionality and firearms are what really give me hope so dont ruin that for me

What are the skills and knowledge you could actually bring & fully realize at some point in the past?

And we're taking this in the strictest, nerdiest, materialist lense. I don't care how smart you are you ain't making a steam engine the in bronze age, for instance.

So what could you create, with just your knowledge & period tools? What kind of institutional, technological, philosophical innovations could you realistically recreate? How would you interface with the social fabric of society to not be some crazed pariah who never positively influences the place they went?
