When I have this discussion with any Danes, basically every time they call me pretty much insane for saying that I will always choose Lidl over Netto. Supermarkets in Denmark in general are quite bad, with little choice, poor quality, products not in stock, but I generally think the foreign ones like Lidl or Rema 1000 have a better standards and a little more interesting range of products. So what is yours?

PS: I wish we had ICA here

Coop and Netto have sticky floors

Føtex is a big Netto

Salling is a section of Føtex

Irma is dying

Aldi was supposed to die forst

Meny is for the rich and for fresh fish

Lidl is perfekt

Spar is a mythical place where you can spar

Rema is cheap but small

If I could afford it, I would always go in Meny. But it’s way too expensive, so I go with Netto for most of it, and then Meny when I need something specific or I want to treat myself

Where I live Rema1000 and Netto has a quite nice range and also an ok selection of organic goods.

In a city closeby, both rema1000 and especially Netto is quite much worse.

My conclusion is, that many supermarket chains/franchises in Denmark, actually vary a lot on several parameter, depending on local management and procurement policy

Lidl had value for money. Netto is expensive and worse experience for me than Lidl. Like OP I also appreciate rema 1000. Great products for fair prices. Their own stuff is really good imo. Rarely shop anywhere but Lidl and Rema and speciality shops

Super Brugsen or Meny are usually the best depending on where you live.

Because their prices are fucking insane.

38kr for a frozen pizza?

That costs 18-23 in other stores as normal price?...

Spar is criminally insane with their prices my guy.

And it's not just frozen pizza. But nearly anything frozen.

Spring rolls. 9-11 kr extra compared to most stores. Bread. 5-10kr more expensive. Even something as simple as an ice bag costs twice what it does In netto and it has less weight.

P

Frozen pizza has increased a lot in price at Netto and Coop 365 as well due to the war inflation.

They are great with buy two items deals. Usually well stocked, and really good staff that are friendly. They have some really good everyday prices on many products as well.

IRMA, while it lasts.

Once IRMA is no more, I will be a MENY-boi.

To quote the legendary rapper Bawl Disney:

"Jeg' i IRMA,

Netto er for bumser;

hjemløse tosser

i træningsbukser."

ICA is our favourite as we quite often are by in Sweden we always buy a lot there. In Denmark Meny and Rema1000 are the top contenders. But yes - Supermarkets in Denmark are not really that good. I guess the fierce competition in a market where there are 20% too many supermarkets takes its toll.

Snifhvide at 2023-08-16 14:05:06+00:00 ID: jwfnlf2

Meny by far. They are not all alike though. The one in Lyngby isn't great, the ones in Hellerup and Nordhavn are the best.

Super Brugsen has the best selection of fruits and veggies, so I always stop there first. I’m a transplant from the USA, and the quality and variety of produce at supermarkets here in Denmark is so miserable. I’ll gladly pay the extra money at Brugsen so that I can eat real food. I eat so little meat and dairy that I really couldn’t care less that they cost a lot more at Brugsen. Plus the local one has a decent bakery, decent coffee beans, a pretty good selection of beer, wine and booze. And it’s organized well with helpful staff, which saves me time- a resource I value far above money.

Rema 1000 and Lidl are my favourite ones. Ok variety and reasonable prices.

And I try to avoid the Coop ones, I think they are way too expensive.

Meny and føtex.

Of the discount ones Lidl is very nice.

Netto, rema etc are filthy

We have Rema, Lidl and Føtex close to us. Also Netto but it's not walking distance.

Rema does it alright but has gotten expensive, Lidl is not really impressive but at least it's not full of German things, Føtex is just standard but has mostly German meat :(

On rare occasions we go to Netto and it's normally a positive experience.

Lidl is good and cheap, but some of there store brand products are bad. Nothing compete with them in bakeoff tho.

Rema is cheap for stables, but very limited range.

Netto pretends it is still cheap, but i see you!

Føtex got range like SuperBrugsen but is cheaper.

Salling pretends to be Irma i guess?

Aldi is somehow still around? How long does it take to die?!?

Menu is expensive, but the larger ones have huge range, and very good products. The only standard grocery store i buy fresh fish in!

Løvbjerg usually have good offers but it always too far away.

Bilka makes sense of you have more than 50 children, i guess

Spar has good offers, but generally not a place to go.

Coop365 is horrible to say, but pretty much the same spot as Rema

I usually shop in Netto. I find the type of products they sell to be more to my liking than the similar ones in Lidl or Aldi.

In the German stores, the bread is too sweet, the yogurt too thick, and their coffee too poor quality for what I prefer. The thing with being too sweet is an issue with a lot of their wares.

I have a Netto, 365, Kvickly and Rema close by, and I go probably spend 70% of my grocery budget at Netto, 25% at 365 and 5% at Rema.

Rema and Kvickly are too expensive for what they offer and the selection in 365 is often too poor. The one thing I buy in Rema is their napolitana bread which I use for lunch at work.

When Rema was closest it was Rema, when Lidl was closest, it was Lidl. Now Netto is closest, so Netto is my favorite atm.

Honestly they all have close to the same (not in a good way), and their private label is also often the same product, but with different labels. Just read where it's produced, and it will be the same name but with For Salling Group if you find it in Netto, and For Reitan or For Rema1000 if you find it in Rema, and so on.

I believe the manager of the store has a bigger impact on the quality, than the owner of the branch. I know Rema works a bit differently here, as they are a franchise.

Edit - maybe I should add, that this is for discount supermarkets. If I want something special, I usually go to Kvickly as we have a big really good one nearby.

Kvickly is closest, so that's my favourite.

When Aldi was still there, and it was closer, Kvickly was my favourite.

Rema 1000, decent quality, decent prices. Selection not amazing, but for one stop shopping on the way home from work, it's good enough. Usually ends up being cheaper than SuperBrugsen.

Netto has cheap canned drinks sometimes and random good snacks. One time Arizona Ice Tea was like 5kr. for 500ml bottles. I'm convinced Netto gets a lot of 'run off' products from Bilka / Føtex (all owned by Salling Group)

Bonus to Spar my local one is packed with stuff you'd never find anywhere else great selection and the boss who runs it is a cool guy.

Bruger mest Rema 1000 og Lidl. Rema 1000 har mange ting i mindre portioner og gode tilbud. Lidl har det største udvalg af frosne grøntsager og bedste kvalitet af dem.

I love talking about this particular topic, and I am super opinionated about it.

By far, the shittiest one has to be 365, Coop, whatever that place is called. Once in a while you find something good or interesting, maybe a marked down item. Other than that, it has barely any redeeming qualities to it, in my opinion. The place always seems completely picked over, like something before the apocolypse, and items are hard to find (weird organizing choices!). The store is often messy, and it seems extremely over-staffed - and yet somehow you often have to wait or even make yourself be heard, like calling out for an employee to come over and do the checkout! I can't stand having to do that, it is awkward!

Mostly, I go with Rema 1000. Simply because it is closest, and prices are reasonable for these weird times. Not the biggest fan of their selection of products, but most of their items are pretty good, I think.

I of course, as I'm sure most people do, dream of a Lidl within walking distance. That is my favorite supermarket 💙💛❤️

tldr: 365 bad, rema alright, lidl the goat

If I have to choose only one, I will go with Føtex, they have a lot of variety, and the prices are ok, wish they had more discounts tho.

Meny is amazing but crazy expensive.

And between the discount supermarkets, I prefer Netto, but a lot of them are depressing af, so choose wisely which one to go.

Whilst it is quite expensive, Superbrugsen usually has good products. I like Netto, but they used to be a lot cheaper.

Fakta and Coop 365 is a shit hole every time.

I have Rema and Brugsen within 1 km, but I drive 6 km to go to Netto or Bilka (to-go), because I prefer stores, that actually have their items in stock and have more than 5 organic goods

Rema1000 for the basics, Meny for fancier stuff, LIDL for the wacky country specific products. Like, you can buy actual guanciale to make spaghetti carbonara by the book In Lidl whenever they have Italy Week, which is quite often.

Normally you have to seek out a shop specialising in Italian stuff. Same goes for Balkan week, Eastern Europe week and Middle East Week.
