When I have this discussion with any Danes, basically every time they call me pretty much insane for saying that I will always choose Lidl over Netto. Supermarkets in Denmark in general are quite bad, with little choice, poor quality, products not in stock, but I generally think the foreign ones like Lidl or Rema 1000 have a better standards and a little more interesting range of products. So what is yours?

PS: I wish we had ICA here

This is such a dumb take. Brugsen, Føtex and Kvickly is literally the same price ringe as Irma, but without the high end products.

It’s quite remarkable that two things the majority of Danish redditors can agree on is:

1 - Danish supermarkets suck

and

2 - Irma was a laughable concept only for snobbish Copenhageners

And at the same time they complain about supermarkets sucking, they'll complain about the prices at Irma, Meny and Kvickly. Danes want ICA or the giant luxury markets of southern europe as their supermarkets but only wants to pay Slovenian Aldi prices for their stuff. It's a tale as old as time.

Danes have a shitton of money but when it comes to grocery shopping anything above Balkan prices is seen as a ripoff.

I agree with you.

I have tried Lidl but I have never understood it. It seems mostly discount for me.

Somehow our Irma is still up and running. So is our Meny. These are the two closest supermarkets but absolutely also our favourites. They actually have a lot in common. To be honest I maybe prefer Meny a little bit Irma has some cool products (their yogurt and chicken for instance is better, hope they carry these items with them to the new chain).

Supposedly the Irmas still in operation are the ones that will be merged with Kvickly and Superbrugsen eventually. But according to the staff at my closest surviving Irma they are getting mixed signals from above and no one seems quite sure what the plan is.

Meny supermarkets are typically a lot bigger and has a much wider selection than a typical Irma.

But Meny is also more expensive than Irma and has very little ecological stuff.

Lidl is definitely discount, but I think of it as some kind of high end discount - the one closest to me is always clean and never messy, has some quite nice products that are different from other supermarkets, their vegetables are always fresh and the bake off is quite ok.

I feel like Irma is considerably more expensive than Føtex and Kvickly. Don't know about Brugsen. Haven't been in one for a while.

The thing is - in my experience - Irmas basic (ecological) products like vegetables, fruit and milk and other dairy is the same price for the same quality compared to the others.

But the others also have cheaper stuff of lower quality that Irma doesn’t have. Like 2 kg minced pork for 50 kr or Coop spaghetti for 7 kr. And Irma also has more expensive stuff of a higher quality that the others has very little of. Like meat from Gris, Lam & Ko who declared bankruptcy yesterday because Irma shut down.
