[-] [email protected] 50 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

Not to mention...they show China, but it isn't highlighted as a "Country with a Chinese base"

They can't even do the colors on the Very Real And Scary Imperialism Map™ right

[-] [email protected] 28 points 8 months ago

And the base is located in a country that leases land for military bases like it’s candy to any country that asks lol

So are they saying that having overseas military bases is a bad thing now, or?

[-] [email protected] 64 points 8 months ago

They're trying their damn hardest to conjure up some sort of whataboutism to throw at people who point this out

Shoddy reporting here, The Economist is missing a few important ones like:

Countries that I had a wet dream about China hosting a base

Countries that start with the letter C, like China, that could have a base

Countries that China definitely hasn't considered hosting a base in but might change their mind someday

[-] [email protected] 48 points 8 months ago

Countries with enough undeveloped land to host a Chinese military base

[-] [email protected] 41 points 8 months ago

Countries larger than a Chinese military base, and so could probably host one.

[-] [email protected] 33 points 8 months ago

Updating all the land area measurements in Wikipedia to units of Probable Number of Chinese Military Bases Hosted

Countries that I had a wet dream about China hosting a base

came to the fleeting thought that China built a base in Liechtenstein

go ahead Kamala, send your best

[-] [email protected] 20 points 8 months ago

Every time you eat dim sum, China gets a new military base

[-] [email protected] 74 points 8 months ago

idk The Economist, all of this sounds pretty... baseless

[-] [email protected] 42 points 8 months ago

The Economist is a piece of rag that likes to get high on orientalism and neoliberalism...

[-] [email protected] 29 points 8 months ago

The Economist is what happens when someone parses the first word of "Combat Liberalism" as an adjective instead of a verb.

[-] [email protected] 17 points 8 months ago

Incredible. This should be a tagline.

Side note: I've never understood why 反对自由主义 in particular is translated to "Combat Liberalism" instead of "Oppose Liberalism" since all of Mao's other works that start with 反对 are translated as "Oppose", the most famous being 反对本本主义 "Oppose Book Worship"

[-] [email protected] 21 points 8 months ago

The Economist is liberal ideology and imperialism distilled

We're getting reports that a Chinese Vicky 3 player thought his country probably should build a base on the Falkland Islands to project power. Is this funny to you, too, you insolent tankies?

[-] [email protected] 49 points 8 months ago

In surprised they didn't just include every Chinatown in a majort city as a "base"

[-] [email protected] 28 points 8 months ago

So only one base, that's an anti piracy base in conjunction with the West?

Lmao. Embarassing reporting

[-] [email protected] 38 points 8 months ago

smh economist, didn't even list the base China probably thought about establishing in the Shadow Realm to keep tabs on Marik Ishtar

Big tactical mistake by China to not maybe or maybe not consider what would happen if they asked Bhutan to host a Chinese base without actually asking them to do so. Speaking from experience here. I considered asking Bhutan to host a military base of mine (in the end I decided on not asking since I have no connection to Bhutan or any kind of military) and it worked out great.

Just to make something clear. Djibouti's main economic activity is selling military bases to anyone who asks for one.

[-] [email protected] 22 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

We're 1 and a half years later from the publication of this. How many new bases are there?

Oh. None? Alright then.

I'll try to remember that when I'm thinking about my impoverished country spending all our heavy tax money on NATO bases and equipment, those damn commies are so war hungry

They've probably thought about a base here. Waow scary
