I remember being so frustrated with Xbox 360 games by the end of its lifespan- muddy, jagged visuals and awful framerates. Who gives a shit how many fancy new effects you crammed in when the presentation looks like shit?

Then you popped in some PS2 remaster and you got crystal crisp 3D and 60fps. I honestly would have preferred "outdated" graphics if it meant the games would have run better

It's not like the PS3 and Xbox 360 were that much better to be honest

Now let's see that bad boy blown up to 4K in PCSX2 👀

spoiler

And hope it's not too badly affected by Z-fighting

I wouldn't know, I haven't played any of the Souls games. Kind of interesting if it's some kind of signature artistic choice 🤔

Looking up some footage, the characters in that game do have some pretty detailed faces for the time. Usually PS1 games had more of an action figure approach with the faces just painted on their heads. Also loving the Akira Toriyama character designs (PBUH)

Though this time it's even dumber, since they're doing the game version of the forced Sydney Sweeney discourse, where they act like conventionally attractive women are extinct/it's illegal to be attracted to them.

I think the Gamers are sort of half-right in that blatant objectification is much less common now than it used to be two console generations ago and that there is an active attempt to make games that are more diverse and representative as opposed to games that give boners to a certain type of dude.

I also believe that game companies know that if they put out a major AAA game where every female character looked and jiggled like Mai Shiranui they would probably get made fun of on Twitter and an editorial on Polygon calling them out on sexual objectification and they just want to avoid the bad publicity.

Of course, you'd also equally get blue checkmark pronounjaks calling them epic and based on Twitter and articles on Gamer outlets praising them for standing up to the woke agenda, not to say anything of the hundreds of Youtube videos doing the same.

I think it just really eats at them that despite how loud and annoying they get, large video game companies still know that exclusively pandering to a niche audience of horny nerds just doesn't make financial sense

This reminds me of when Team Ninja said they had enlisted female Team Ninja staff to help research boob physics for Dead or Alive 5

I don't think it's just a matter or early 3D physics being wonky. Plenty of Japanese anime and 2D games have intentionally exaggerated boob jiggles because of horny animators and a horny target audience that is obsessed with boobs, panties etc

I think to people like this goofy boob physics have very little to do with realistic simulation of soft body tissue and much more about being a signifier of whom the game is for

N-nostalgia Critic?! Why are you looking at me like that

With the caption "SHOT ON LOCATION AT INTERPLAY WORLDWIDE HEADQUARTERS" the implication is that Interplay HQ is such a wild place and the guys working for them so cool that there are just bikini babes spontaneously congregating at the company pool

They're as much a part of the furniture as the pool itself

Disco Elysium Injoyers

Can't have people on Youtube talking shit about your game when describing the game's plot and themes will get you demonetised think-about-it

xi-vote I did my part

I'm sure we can make a new Dino Crisis happen if everybody on Hexbear votes hard enough, I can feel it agony-wholesome

Also while you're there talk up other cool older Capcom games like Haunting Ground or Ōkami

trump-who-must-go I didn't know that. It led an amazing life, what else can you say? It was an amazing console, whether you agree or not. It was an amazing console that had an amazing life.

Looking at all the Youtube thumbnails in my feed in the past 24 hours, Xbox died somehow. RIP John Halo and Mark Fenix

Stuff like this is honestly really cool rat-salute-2

RIP Spec Ops: The Line

Also fuck licensing. Also fuck these big companies that are too cheap to keep their back catalogues available. Bodes extremely well for the future, I love it

Keep circulating the ~~tapes~~ GOG installers

They had this really clean high-res, high-poly look and nice colours compared to the more blocky and blurry looking fighting games on the PS2.

I've been messing around with DOA3 and DOA2U on the XEMU emulator and the resolution here is upscaled 3x so what you're seeing is definitely a lot sharper than it would have been on original hardware, but still. Blown up like this it you could tell me this was a PS3 or Xbox 360 game and I'd believe you.

As much as I like the series for its gameplay and as nice as I think the Xbox games look I've always thought that the weakest part of the DOA games has always been their incredibly bland character design and artstyle. Even though they draw from the same pool of martial arts archetypes and stereotypes as every other fighting game series in existence pretty much every character is much more lame and feels less interesting than their equivalents from Tekken, Street Fighter, etc. Kazuya Mishima has more character in his eyebrows than the entire roster of the DOA franchise.

The female cast is supposed to be the draw awooga but on balance the designs aren't that much more hornier than most other Japanese fighting game franchises and the characters in those tend to have some personality to go with the fanservice.

If I hear "unalive" as a verb one more time dean-frown

Why are we all talking like corporate copyright lawyers or marketing ghouls, using these explicitly commercial terms thonk

I'm disappointed by the ease at which "IP" rolls off my tongue. I mean, most of the fiction and entertainment we surround ourselves with are more soulless corporate slop than art, but still

It's funny to think this was enough to launch an entire franchise back in the 90s

I was scrolling through a list of PS1 roms and realised I'd never actually played the original DOA, having started with the series with the PS2 port of DOA2. I gave it a go in DuckStation and the boob physics are distractingly funny on these low-poly models miyazaki-laugh

The game feels pretty clunky and primitive (which is not that surprising since it came out in arcades in 1996) and it looks like most of the things that make these games fun to play (the four button punch/kick/throw/counter system, interactive multi-tier stages with hazards, breakable walls and objects & fast-paced combat where most attacks send your enemy flying at mach 2 right into the things I just listed) were introduced in Dead Or Alive 2

Hope the image host works, not sure where to put mp4s now that imgur requires a login

They name their game PALWORLD and it doesn't even run at 50hz? brow
