Everything to do with the USA's own Imperial Backyard. From hispanics to the originary peoples of the americas to the diasporas, South America to Central America, to the Caribbean to North America (yes, we're also there).

Post memes, art, articles, questions, anything you'd like as long as it's about Latin America. Try to tag your posts with the language used, check the tags used above for reference (and don't forget to put some lime and salt to it).

Here's a handy resource to understand some of the many, many colloquialisms we like to use across the region.

"But what about that latin american kid I've met in college who said that all the left has ever done in latin america has been bad?"

On the 13th of March in 1979, the People's Revolutionary Government (PRG) was proclaimed in Grenada after the Marxist-Leninist New Jewel Movement overthrew the state in a socialist revolution, with Maurice Bishop serving as Prime Minister.

After coming into power, Bishop stated the goals of the NJM: "We definitely have a stake in seeking the creation of a new international economic order which would assist in ensuring economic justice for the oppressed and exploited peoples of the world, and in ensuring that the resources of the sea are used for the benefit of all the people of the world and not for a tiny minority of profiteers".

The new government developed an ambitious social program, initiating a literacy campaign, expanding education programs, worker protections, and establishing farmers' cooperatives.

During the PRG's reign, unemployment was reduced from 49% to 14%, the ratio of doctors per person increased from 1/4000 to 1/3,000, the infant mortality rate was reduced, and the literacy rate increased from 85% to 90%. In addition, laws guaranteeing equal pay for equal work for women were passed, and mothers were guaranteed three months' maternity leave.

The government suspended the constitution of the previous regime, ruling by decree until a factional conflict broke out, ultimately leading to Maurice Bishop's assassination. President Ronald Reagan launched an invasion of Grenada a few weeks later, on October 25th, 1983.

"We have attempted to show in this Manifesto what is possible. We have demonstrated beyond doubt that there is no reason why we should continue to live in such poverty, misery, suffering, dependence and exploitation...The new society must not only speak of Democracy, but must practise it in all its aspects. We must stress the policy of 'Self-Reliance' and 'Self-Sufficiency' undertaken co-operatively, and reject the easy approaches offered by aid and foreign assistance. We will have to recognise that our most important resource is our people."

Lmao my company is straight up giving pay cuts of between 10-20% to remote workers in high cost of living areas out of, and I quote, “fairness to the local jobs market” doomjak

I’ve never seen a workplace push so hard for people to quit before, it’s unreal

Today in people-watching:

On my commute today I saw a black camaro with a spoiler and 'TOMBSTONE' written on the rear window in white block letters.

When I pulled up beside it at a red light I looked to see what kind of person would drive that. Skinny guy with a big beard wearing a hoodie and baseball cap and, no joke, smoking a fucking cigar.

real gangweed hours

Horror idea to make zombies work again for one more movie: zombie apocalypse but they aren't interested in the main character and then they're the only person left alive amongst a town of zombies who totally ignore them. It would be depressing as hell. A24, buy this treatment.

The city cracked down on the tent cities and now they're gone and all of our parks are fenced up. So what's the difference? Your children still can't play there because there's police fences stopping them. My friends who work in the shelters which were 'expanded' to allow for this to be okay according to the press releases haven't had any real spike in new admittance nor have they been given the increased capacity for them. Our municipal population is about 435 000. 1000 are homeless. Now a good chunk are totally unreachable, tent cities allowed for centralized aide at the least. You knew where to go with coats and food. Now the homeless don't have that. Or some degree of community, as unsafe and crsppy as it is, it's not like tent robbing and fights weren't s thing of course but not having to tske your tent to one of the few patches of woods around and living like a hermit is worse. So our fair city has destroyed hundreds of lives and the parks are still fenced off. No one can use them now. Rent costs $2000 for a single bedroom to live in a city where we fence off what makes a neighborhood valuable to keep out the homeless to maintain the value. I need nukes. Come friendly bombs

Wtf is up with my trauma? If I'm asking for something from a more powerful person that I'm desperate for (e.g. housing, job) and anything goes even slightly off script, I start sweating and shaking uncontrollably and info-dumping anything that might be relevant to their decision. I barely remember anything and feel like I'm looking at my perspective from several meters behind my head. It's making it really hard to do anything in this society.

This little guy is actually keeping me from being too self-destructive tonight.

Give it back you little shit.

No. Mine.

For real though, I’m emotionally attached to this whale plushie. He was intended as a gift for my ex-friend (they both have the same child-like joy in their hearts and say “Yay” the same), and if I die I want him to go live with them, but I don’t even want to think about if they don’t want him, or something. That’s why for the last few months he’s been staying at a friend’s house. This friend has a daughter who has some plushie frens for him. And he doesn’t have to be in the rain. The rain freaks him out.

Kinda fucked up that the people of Oregon voted to decriminalize drug usage in the state, and 4 years later, the governor/legislature decides "no actually, you didn't vote for that" and scraps the law

I am very lonely. I want someone to share life with. Someone to wrap my arms around. Not having that makes me big sad, and I don't know how to change my situation.

Back in ye olde times there was a man under oath to the king to ride from shire to shire, door to door to inform infractors amongst the peasantry thst they had posted a YouTube link and a tax would be levied if the given alternatives weren't used. Now we have AI doing it.

It’s wild how much this country hates poor people.

Took almost a month to get insurance for my partners mom that had a stroke so she could hopefully go to rehab

Her neurologist thought she’d definitely get it, but the insurance declined her

She can’t get Medicaid bc she has a house in her name despite not have any income and being literally bed ridden. Can’t get disability or Medicare bc it’s off work credits and apparently she doesn’t have enough despite working in this country since 94

Literally who can meet these ridiculous criteria??

Politicians and health care insurance/hospital ceos must be made to fear for their lives, like at this point it’s a moral imperative, it’d save countless lives from suffering

Incidentally she has a go fund me if anyone is interested dm me, thanks

Death to America

Someone asked where a server had been at work recently and while he was my pal, the reason for his absence means he isn't now. His gf is a cop and was doing a cop course out of town. I said she was taking dog shooting lessons and classes on how to mistake everyday objects for guns and a co-worker said 'so...not too big on cops huh?' I cam be mostly mask off but gotta watch it a little bit so I couldn't quite say I'd like to fucking round them up and put them on a train. So I just said the police should be dissolved and any current officer should be banned from future employment.

Tolkien said he "rather detested" Dune and I get it. Nobody in Dune seems like they're having any fun. There's six books and I don't think anyone has fun or chills out in any of them. It's all conniving and scheming and killing, never chilling or vibing. People hang out and have good time in LOTR. Those Hobbits know how to have a good time and throw a party. Can you imagine a Dune character chilling with the homies? Maybe Stilgar sometimes but IDK. Dune has the most killer hallucinogen in the universe and everyone takes it to get an advantage over someone or be more efficient at their math job or prophetmax like a Silicon Valley psycho.

I lost a bunch of points on a group project because I'm pretty sure one of my group mates used Chat GPT for his section because his response was garbled, repetitive, and factually wrong. I don't have definitive proof but should I bring this up with my professor?

Pathetic: I will basically get invested in anybody who is remotely nice to me, or can keep a conversation going. Doesn't matter if we have anything in common or whatever, I'll fold to whatever you're saying just for the human contact because otherwise it is such a struggle.

Fwiw I can also build a bridge to a social connection by getting into someone's big interests, but that mostly leads to them talking about their thing and nothing else 24/7.

I hate people so much I have no idea how any of this is supposed to work. Who let me post online, anyway?

Had a strange dream with Hexbears in it

In short, I was homeless but had successfully convinced some rich, religious people I met while living in their backyard or something lol to help me build some kind of little commune where people (including me) could live for free

As soon as it was done some cops showed up and held us hostage at the edge of it while they bulldozed the whole thing

Can't have shit, not even in my dreams lmao
