For the first time in my life I had to call some cops, to ask them to step and issue a noise violation. It is nearly 11pm, my family had received the most terrible news that day, and I was on hour 60 of being awake. After what has been the absolute most insane emotional, physical and mental rollercoaster of my life, I finally was drifting into sweet slumber the music began. I tried to fall asleep despite it, but it was no use. This neighbor has been loud before and most times I can ignore it, and sleep through, but this insomnia has a grip on me that I have seen in years.

I went down and knocked on his door and was meet with "WHY YOU POUNDING ON MY Door and man aggressive stepping out. I asked him please I have not slept in two days and I cannot sleep with you music on. He said it sound like I had a personal problem and he slammed he door in my face. The music was turned up instead of down, and Hexbear... I cracked. I am a transwoman living alone, I have been on HRT long enough that my muscle density is gone. I have low ciswoman levels of estrogen in my blood. And this man has menaced me before pounding on my door to accuse me of calling the cops on them on a previous time they were loud, when I had not. They said that I had better not EVER call the cops on him

I had to call 911 and ask them to issue a sound violation. I talked to the cops to give a statement, because frankly, this man scares me. He 6 foot something, towers above my 5"9' seems to always a baclava, when not in his home and is ripped.

And now adrenal is pumping through me and I may be to scared to sleep. I don't want the hallucinations Hexbear, these insomnia waking nightmares again.

Oh god.

Edit: I got like 4 hours of sleep. It's not enough, but it's something.

While the cops suck, of course, they are the only tool that is allowed to us to deal with situations like this. Don't feel bad for calling them when it was the only option you had left. Try to get some sleep, and if you can't, see if you can stay with a friend for a night or two.

We want to replace the police with better institutions, but while those institutions don't exist, you work with what you got. You are not a bad person for doing what you have to to get a basic biological need.

Scary situation with no 100% wins for you either way. Take care.

what's the alternative? shoot him?

I 2nd this...

Don't fret, comrade. A simple noise complaint call to the cops is nothing to worry about. Sounds like your neighbour is a wanker anyway.

I, too, have had to call the cops on my neighbour (although he was actually violent and a threat to everyone around him) - I mean, you don't really have anyone else to call, right?

Not your fault. Relax. and try to get some sleep Care-Comrade

Nah. It sucks and acab etc. etc. but there have been times where I have had to call the cops.

We don't have community policing which is capable of supplanting the police force nor a police force under the dictatorship of the proletariat and, until we do, unfortunately there are going to be situations that require police intervention. That's just the nature of the grim reality that we live in today.

I'd recommend to people to use the non-emergency line in these sorts of situations - most states/countries have them, if you are reading this comment and you aren't sure if you've got one for your region you should take a quick look now to find out - and it's a good way to avoid putting additional demand on emergency services in situations that do not require an immediate response.

If your neighbour was a reasonable person then it wouldn't have needed to get to this point. But that's outside of your sphere of influence and so you shouldn't be taking on a degree of responsibility which is not commensurate with your level of control.

My rule for calling the cops is “Will adding an armed, paranoid maniac to this situation improve things?”

And for a noise complaint when you’ve already tried to handle it yourself, the answer is unfortunately yes. It’d be much better if there was someone else that could be called to fix the situation, but the armed paranoid maniac is the only option available to you. Thats not your fault. You’re just doing your best with the options available.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 8 months ago

Honestly I'd like to send lots of armed, paranoid maniacs to this guy's house.

some cities have paid civilians to deescalate non potentially violent problems because of the fact a person with a gun could escalate the problem.

a noise complaint would likely be one of its best use cases.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 8 months ago

Noise complaints and traffic enforcement are the big two I see where that would be so so helpful

[–] [email protected] 17 points 8 months ago

No you're not a terrible person your neighbour is a terrible person.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 8 months ago

I mean, to your credit, you tried to resolve this politely without recourse to the cops despite previous threats from this person. Fuck em

[–] [email protected] 14 points 8 months ago

Maybe I'm wrong too, but I've also called the cops for noise violations. Sleep is a real need.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 8 months ago

Sounds like a chud to me, call the cops and let them fight, I feel sorry for you but definitely not sorry for them, you did the right thing. Cops are pigs but they're not the only ones out there.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 8 months ago

I’m not above calling the cops on someone if they’re an absolute chode.

Also if you think you’re a bad person for that, I sometimes think about getting back at my ex-friend for basically robbing me of my self-worth by calling the cops and telling them what they do for a living (selling drugs).

You could get some Pepper spray and/or a very powerful flash light (those with a warning that they will blind u) just in case

[–] [email protected] 12 points 8 months ago

Any sort of high powered flashlight is really good for personal/home defence. You don't have to shell out big bucks because a decent led flashlight that is powerful enough will dazzle someone when you point it at their eyes (you can get these for about $15 if you shop around.) Sure, they might not physically hurt to stare at but if an attacker can't see without shielding their eyes and if it takes a couple of seconds before their vision returns then that's gonna put them at a major disadvantage.

Neighbor is a worthless chud.

Maybe the cops will ummm... deal with him in traditional cop fashion.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

Fuck it, use the pigs for what you can use them for. If someone decides to be a massive piece of shit, they would have had it coming in a better world as well.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 8 months ago

I'd literally punch this asshole if I were in your situation. Can't blame you

[–] [email protected] 3 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

What a nightmarish situation, I'm really sorry you're having to deal with that. You did the right thing, at the right time. I hope your neighbor got the message clearly that you'll stick up for yourself by whatever means you have at your disposal.

[deleted a load of stuff stuff. I'm tedious as fuck sometimes.]

I just as easily could have said, there were strong signs that night was heading towards a police presence one way or another and you did fine job of making sure it happened at point least likely to result in tragedy. Good on you.

OP I hope things are going alright and that you ended up catching up on the sleep some.

[sorry for the earlier screed, if anyone saw this. I triggered myself thinking about all the times I've needlessly endangered myself and others under the guise of 'avoiding police involvement' while patting myself on the back for being radical and tough]
