Would you judge me if you saw me hiking in these?

Basically the title. I don’t hike ever but wanted to start and I just really love these boots. Would you judge someone / assume they’re a newbie if you saw them wearing these?

Ravenrock Loop Trail

The Ravenrock loop trail was a short but challenging trail. The stairway down and back up kicked everyone’s butt 😂. If you live in North Carolina I’d recommend trail hoping there!

Anyone ever work for the IRS?

Stumbled upon this job - definitely not for me but found it interesting. There really is a variety of options for forestry jobs.

I learned this from Confucius

I was recently fascinated by Confucius’ teachings thanks to this video I came across while mindlessly scrolling on YouTube. Its amazing how you can take old teachings and apply them to your daily life.

I would recommend meditating over this.

Blisters on blisters on blisters!

Hello everyone,

Recently I have become a lot more active, walking every morning 10km at a brisk pace. It started out great but soon big blisters would form and this has derailed my morning walks in some cases. The whole "no pain, no gain" mantra can only go so far before you do quite serious damage.

Some background - I am overweight, by a lot. I am 33 years old, 5,8" and currently 105.4km. I carry most of my weight in my gut and chest area. The walking has helped this quite a bit because as of this morning I am down 5kg from 110.4kg back on Aug 1st. My health took quite a big hit this last year, going back to September 2022 I was hospitalized with Alcoholic Hepatitis. My drinking had got to such an insane amount that it almost killed me, sadly this happened 2 more times since. I had just over 6 months sober but a lapse on a business trip resulted in another 2 month long bender which brought be right up to the end of May this year but, thankfully, I have been sober since, 3 months on Fri 25th Aug.

I give this background context to give you an understanding of the drive I have to become healthy. When this all first started to deteriorate and I had my first stint of sobriety for those 6 months I wasn't taking too much care of myself physically. I was still eating like crap and was barely exercising, in my mind I was still doing great as I wasn't drinking. This time around, with hindsight, I can see I clearly wasn't doing enough and not drinking, while still the most important, was only one piece of a puzzle for a healthier life.

Back to the blisters. As I said, was quite sedentary for quite some time, lots of weight building and soft feet getting softer lol. I have a lovely walk along a river here beside my house and can do just over 10km doing a loop. I had done this many times in the past and so back out I went to try again. I could just about do 5km before my feet were in a lot of pain as well as lots of shin splints pain. Long story short-ish, over a few days I built back up to 10km but the blisters started really coming on strong and becoming incredibly painful.

They were in awkward areas like right on the ball of the foot and the main fleshy part of my baby toes and the toe beside it. I didn't pop them and figured I would leave them just do their thing and heal. I have been using powder to keep my feet dry as well as using special socks with extra padding but not long into the walk they'd pop and once that happened quite a lot of the skin would start to fall away, looking more like a scalded burn than a blister. I have kept my feet clean, using antiseptic and then keeping my feet dry in the hopes they will just dry up and become tough and callusy. In this time, I have also taken a few days off to let them heal up a bit before going out and having them split open again. Seems to have helped.

I am wondering is there anything else I can do. I am using bandaids on each toe, making sure they are covered, using powder to keep my feet dry during the walk, I have a decent pair of shoes - asics, wondering is there anything else I should be doing. The irony of course being that my weight is pretty much the cause of this but to lose it requires the walking which causes the blisters lol

Am I right in thinking my feet will toughen up over time, is it a bad idea to do it this way as I might cause my feet more damage, any advice or your own experiences would be very much appreciated.

Lost Buckle to my Pack

On a recent trip I somehow managed to lose the buckle piece for the right side of the chest strap. Not sure why this piece is something that is removable in the first place, but here we are. I took it to REI (it’s an REI pack) and the guy told me there was nothing they could do since the pack is a few years old. Im thinking there has got to be a way to replace that piece as it is an essential part of the pack? If anyone has any idea I’d appreciate it

Painful Walks

Hello people, I just wanna say that I will ask my general doctor when I go in for my appointment but was wondering if any of y'all can tell me anything about what I've been experiencing. For starters let me just say I'm a big fat (380 lbs) I went from not walking that much to being decently active this summer. I try to hit 5-7k steps a day, anyways about like a week ago I went on a hike that was more work than I planned for, which was nice. My legs for the first time were killing me after all the inclines. Work, where I normally rack up 6-7k steps has been mostly fine but on my off days when I go for walks has been a challenge. Something that has gotten so easy for me and was now hard to complete was downer. About halfway into my walk my lower legs (and feet) get really warm and tingle. They almost feel like dead weight. When I got home I accidently leaned forward and the front of lower leg was on fire, I also notice there's some pain and tightness (?) in the back. This pain fades really quickly once I sit/lay down, like within minutes. But even after a few hours I can notice a pain in the back of my calf when I tilt my foot up. Is this normal muscle building or something?

Blisters and foot pain

So the past 2 months I have started walking a lot. At first it was fine. My goal is for it to help lose weight and I enjoy walking at the park. But the past few weeks my feet keep hurting more frequently.

I thought it could be my shoes so I bought a new pair that is better for walking and has better air flow. But even though I'm walking less than when I started. Originally around 4 miles now 2. I keep getting blisters behind my toes and when I get home it hurts to walk. Almost like pins and needles.

Should I just keep walking more and build up calluses? Or should I change up my routine somehow? Atm I walk about 3 times a week, averaging 2-4 miles a walk.

Would you rather have an all Merino top or bottoms?

I’m preparing to move above the arctic circle in Scandinavia from western/ central Canada (so I’m used to the cold!) but one thing I am not used to are wet winters. I can’t justify playing full price for both a top and bottoms right now but I have found a pure Merino top for a great price, and some blend bottoms on sale. I run pretty hot in the winter so I’m not too worried about being cold, but I’m worried about feeling wet. I will have decent winter rain gear and some great Merino socks from Costco.

Thank you in advance!

How do you deal with pesky cows?

During recent trip we had some trouble with local's cattle. Bull ripped one of our tents and was looking at us with evil eye.

Water storage

I have a question regarding hydration bladders. I use Source brand bladders and would like to fill one to keep in my car for emergencies. I wouldn't drink from it until an emergency and it would come in with me every night after work. It would stay in my car for my travel and shift. How long can fresh water be stored in a bladder?

A tool for collecting micro cores

Hello. I am currently working for a University doing field work for mountain pine beetle studies. We have a project coming up and my boss' boss wants us to collect micro cores while we are doing our usual measurements. She asked me to figure out the logistics.

So far, the only instrument I have found for micro cores is a Trephor, which it looks like we'd have to order from Italy. Anyone ever use any other tools? Or even know what the tools might be called so I can look them up?

Thanks!

Why so many more wildfires in western Canada than 20 years ago?

The past few summers (maybe 5 summer, maybe more) there's always wildfires in western Canada, with the resultant smoke.

This wasn't a thing when I was growing up 20 years ago.

What changed to cause this?
