Took too long, but glad to see the United Nations #HCHR finally release a statement on the #Uyghurs exiles at risk of deportation to #China (and certain abuse or death) from #Thailand.

Listened to a quite good podcast about #energy in #China with an academic expert. But the last question was on #Uyghur #forcedlabor and he answered it like it was a compliance issue, something to be managed.

I realized, though, that's how a lot of people see many #humanrights issues. As a risk to be managed or avoided. Not a moral imperative and an issue that, frankly, should be front and central to any supply chain discussion on #cleanenergy

I keep hearing from #Mongols #Turks and now #Uyghurs living in #Japan that #Japanese is relatively easy for them to learn, as the grammar and structure is similar to their languages. That can't be a coincidence, seems like there is a likely common linguistic heritage, no?

Yet, linguists claim they are unrelated languages. Why the contradiction? Is it #Japanese nationalism? Or #western academic elitism?

Imagine all the conversations if #China didn't block Chinese users from using every single widely used foreign app, platform, or social network.

Even #TikTok, remember, blocked interactions between Chinese users and those abroad. #RedNote will soon follow in creating that wall.

How oblivious do you have to be talking loudly on your phone in a crowded train and not realize that you're the only one talking?

#Japan #Tourists

A good time to re-up my take on the #TikTok debate, calling for a different path proposal - mandate reciprocal access for any foreign platform entering a given market. More fair, more democratic & puts the impetus for action on the #Chinese government.

@[email protected] But will it? The massive flooding far inland due to a freak Hurricane #Helene in North Carolina didn't seem to have much of an impact, despite clear links to climate change. Nor the Texas grid crisis from a few years ago.

Grew up partly in Kansas myself so certainly understand the challenge in red America.

I wish climate-linked disasters in other countries mattered.

The #LAFires wouldn't be a "wake-up call" if we were paying attention when floods, typhoons, and fires hit countries like #Bangladesh, #India #Philippines and #brazil #pinoy

We're a dangerous path towards a very unjust #energytransition, led by #china

This steel report gives a false perception. Of the 11 so-called "steel majors," only 1 is #Chinese

In reality, 6 of 10 and 11 of the top 20 steelmakers are 🇨🇳. China produces 54% of the world's steel. Strange to exclude them but include tiny >50 🇯🇵Kobe Steel.

@frog_[email protected] I hope that at least Taiwan would have abstained...

Something the #US #China and #Japan (and some of the world's most despotic regimes) can apparently all agree on - the use of the #deathpenalty

Great to see that the latest report from #Japan's Renewable Energy Institute specifically mentions both #Uyghur #forcedlabor & #coal intensity as concerns with #China's dominance of global #Solar

One of the first times a #climate/#energy group in Japan, as far as I know, has raised this. Not surprised its REI, the most independent & expert led such org.

When China opened the world's largest solar plant this year, nearly all media reports & #climate reactions were positive

They all that #China’s solar prowess rests on the exploitation of #Uyghurs in their homeland

My latest for Atmos on the real cost of solar https://buff.ly/4gtT0pK

@[email protected] It is possible to source US or Korean made panels - with less exposure to forced labor.

@[email protected] Kinda expected for corporate jobs. This was a non-profit job, and in the listing, barely mentions the org, just the founder.

@[email protected] Yep. NY Times did an entire multimedia investigation into how that yacht sank. Meanwhile, when 150+ #Rohingya refugees drowned a few weekslater...barely any attention and no investigations.

@JeffreySmith Don't even have to go that far. A murder in a tent in the Bronx would be as inconsequential.

@VeganCheesecake @pelletbucket probably the most ethical alternative is http://jmp.chat/. I use it and it works pretty well, though not as user friendly as big tech.

@helenslunch @furrowsofar I'm very happy with https://meet.coop - runs on BigBlueButton, secure and Open Source, but not free. But I don't mind paying for a good service.

@privacyfalcon9899 I've been using https://meet.coop/ for nearly 2 years, find it better than Zoom. Runs on BigBlueButton.
