I have had to contact the vmware enterprise support several times and while it was tedious to do so, they always managed to help us out, including when we had datastore locked vhd's after a storage crash.

The president or prime minister said that if China is serious about reclaiming Taiwan, it should also reclaim land that is currently Russian, as that land was also lost during the same time period.

"engaging political debate on twitter"... I think the last engaging political debate on twitter was maybe 10 years ago. Now it's just a cesspool of hate and misogyny, not to mention the retarded rebrand from its equally retarded owner.

I live in an area in central Europe with a lot of deer and while I don't particularly like hunting, it is absolutely necessary to keep the deer population at bay here. With no natural predators, their population would explode without hunting and they are already numerous. I can walk out of the door here and within a matter of minutes I can spot a deer or two.

Wild boars are also quite a nuisance.

There also are more races than ever before. On average he needs to catch 7 points per race. That's difficult but doable with the current point structure and amount of races left

Nightjet.com. It's weird, for some destinations it works fine, but for others not at all, even though it states there are trains going

I wouldn't mind travelling by night train, but every time I check I'm unable to buy tickets. Last trip my wife and I did we really tried doing it by train, but it was just impossible to order. Maybe I just don't understand how to do it, but ordering a plane ticket is fast and easy. Ordering a long distance train ticket should have the same experience.

Edit: ok I checked again and looks like it's possible now. Maybe they got their shit together in the meantime

That's what they are aiming for in any case.

Napster? It's 2024, not 2000...

I've watched the first 3 episodes of season 2 with my wife, despite not liking season 1, but hey, it's a Tolkien show so I will watch it regardless.

Half the time we were on our phones, reading articles or playing some game, because this show is slow and the dialogue is pretty pointless half the time. There are no characters we are really invested in. I guess Durin the younger comes closest, but man, the character building sucks in this show.

I will still watch it, because I'm a Tolkien nerd and I will watch it if only to bash it. I just wish there were fewer reasons to do so.

It keeps showing Internal server error and has been for over 2 hours now. I tested from different locations (China, US, EU) and same errors everywhere. Yet I don't see any news or posts about this anywhere. I have an exchange server that needs installing today and I can't download the prerequisites to even launch the install. Sigh

Bayern Munich have agreed a three-year deal with Vincent Kompany to take over as head coach.

A fee of £10.2m will be paid to Burnley to bring the 38-year-old to the Allianz Arena, where he will succeed Thomas Tuchel in the top job. The Bundesliga club failed in their attempts to convince the German to stay after a run to the Champions League semi-finals and were forced to search elsewhere for a replacement.

Kompany, who began his managerial career at Anderlecht, earned a big reputation after joining Burnley two years ago. The former Manchester City defender took the Championship by storm, earning rave reviews after turning a defensive side into a thrilling attacking team, and led Burnley back into the Premier League at the first time of asking.

There were hopes that Burnley could succeed at the highest level by sticking to their progressive style of play but a failure to reinforce his squad led to a 19th-placed finish and relegation. Allowing Kompany to make a swift departure will give Burnley time to find the right replacement as they gear up for another promotion campaign.

There will be raised eyebrows at Kompany earning such a big job. Equally there is a feeling that the 38-year-old’s methods could work well with a side at the top level. Kompany has experience of living in Germany after representing Hamburg during his hugely successful playing career.

This story is from a number of years ago. At the time I was still working my way up the IT ladder and in this position I was an on-site admin. My colleague, let's call him Bob, had more experience and was more like a proper system admin, except that he managed to land probably the cushiest job in the IT landscape. He was getting paid very good money as a full time consultant and had to do almost nothing. He spent his time looking at cars, vacation spots and getting frustrated on tinder. That's not to say he was lazy, but he did most of his work outside of company hours for his own company and regarded the office hours more as leisure time.

Anyway, we received a mail from the police department that a laptop that had been turned over as evidence in an embezzlement case, could not be opened because the disk was encrypted. An investigator would come by to give us the laptop so that we could decrypt it. The investigation had been going on for over 5 years at that point and we pretty much instantly realized this was unlikely to succeed. So the investigator shows up one day with the laptop and we earnestly try to decrypt it, digging through all potential files that may maintain the correct decryption code. Iirc this was McAfee encryption and we did export the keys on a regular basis, but that was a practice I had introduced after too many codes were lost. Since this laptop was dated from well before my time, I was pretty sure we wouldn't find the code.

Now Bob did think of a solution, with the caveat that it wasn't exactly a legal solution. Given we were dealing with the police, we couldn't really tell them we were about to use illegal methods to provide them potential evidence. When the investigator went on a coffee break, Bob prepared a usb stick that would decrypt the disk, using some obscure piece of software of which I can't remember the name. When the investigator got back, we told him that we were at wits end and that this could take a long time still. The guy was pretty resigned at that point, as he had been waiting for a couple of hours already, and said that he would leave the laptop with us and come back once it was decrypted.

Bob and I waited until the doors of the elevator closed behind him. I'm pretty sure that by the time he got to the ground floor, we had already bypassed the mcafee screen and were logged on to the laptop. Bob launched the decryption and then we discussed when we should inform the investigator that the laptop was ready for pickup. We didn't want to make it suspicious and send the info to him right away, but we also didn't want to wait too long. Bob wanted to milk this thing, as all time spent working on this were bookable hours for him, so we settled on 3 days. So at the end of the week we informed the police the laptop was ready. We got a reply back he would pick it up 2 weeks later. 2 months later he actually did pick it up. I never learned what happened to the investigation.
