Long time I haven't used it but nova video player should do it
Ahh i was looking for feedback from people who currently uses the app they suggest as some months ago vlc too worked fine but still appreciate you pitching in .
Give it a shot, description from fdroid says it supports subtitle download.
Plex is probably not what you're looking for, but it has a built-in subtitle search.
What's broken about VLC? Presumably you've tried deleting app data and reinstalling.
