I was observing this issue personally, as I prefer Proton to Gmail/Outlook duopoly. A sigh of relief.

This question is social/political, and meant to trigger a nice debate on the negatives of imbalanced infinite progressivism we seem to be heading in social and technological spheres, ignoring science, practicality and reason.

Let me put up a disclaimer that I am not trying to poke transgender community here. I am trying to hint towards the "traditional" gender roles that seem to be frowned upon in a cultist manner, even though it is accepted in an unspoken manner that most of us do prefer a lot of "traditional" aspects once we surpass 30s, and life demands responsibility, accountability and maturity.

8values made me think of the fundamental parameters that we gauge ourselves and others on, and this seems like it would have opinions coming from leftists that frown upon traditional values in an almost religious manner, as well as centrists and conservatives that might not have as traditional views as leftists think. Just an open discussion.

We can replace "progressivism" with "liberty" and "nationalism" and create couple more questions, but those are not as debatable I think.

Indian here. There are a lot of Indians that love tech experimentation and "jugaad", and just the mere act of dailying Linux allows us to step up our IT industry game for zero cost.

Non-essential crypto news covers crypto advertisement, insignificant news that does not affect legit users like XMR/ETH/BTC holders or darknet users, posts relating to garbage like Brave browser and its coin, and so on. Due to the multiple kinds of crypto posts that pop up, this rule will be applied subjectively on a case-by-case basis.

Community complaints about Elon Musk were raised here. https://lemmy.ml/post/7186058

A lot of ad and spam posts appear regularly, which need to be squashed. This will be enforced more heavily from now on.

Sometimes legitimate products are advertised, which should be allowed to post. This will be checked per case basis, and unless asked for permission, all such posts will be removed without notice.

Moderator here.

Since there is a loud and collective voice, I will do it, but not all news related to Twitter or Musk can be banned. This is something that you folks need to give me input on. There is going to be a level or kind of essential news that impacts us all, that needs to be allowed to post, and for that we need some agreeable middle ground.

Inputs?

Clap LOUDER for those at the back! This is exactly what my Palestinian friend helped elaborate to me, the single biggest confusion sowed by western Zionist supporting rags into masses.

From my computing guide https://lemmy.ml/post/511377 :

The following software is shared by both Linux and Windows, which will astound you, because the quality of these is the best in their respective categories. There will be a (*) marking for the better one, and (^) if it is FLOSS.

Category Windows/Linux common Windows only Linux only
PDF reader Calibre (* ^ ) SumatraPDF Okular
Audio Player Audacious (* ^ ) foobar2000 -
Video Player SMPlayer (* ^ )/VLC (* ^ ) MPC-HC -
Image Viewer - JPEGView (* ^ )/IrfanView nomacs (* ^ )
File Manager Double Commander Explorer++ (*) Nautilus/Nemo/Dolphin/SpaceFM/Thunar
Media Information Tool MediaInfo (* ^ ) - -
Torrent Client Deluge (* ^ ) / QBitTorrent uTorrent -
Screenshot/Record Tool FlameShot ShareX (* ^ ) Greenshot (*)
Image Management XNViewMP (*) - ImageMagick
Media Library XNViewMP (*) Shotwell (*) -
Video Converter HandBrake (* ^ ) Freemake -
Download Manager Xtreme Download Manager (* ^ ) Internet Download Manager -
Specialised Downloader JDownloader (* ^ ) - -
Compress/Archive Tool PeaZip (* ^ ) 7-Zip (* ^ )/WinRAR -
Colour Picking Tool Colorpicker.fr (* ^ ) Instant Eyedropper gPick
Search Index Tool - Everything (*) FSearch (* ^ )
Light Photo Editor Pinta (* ^ ) Paint.NET (*) -

SMART Disk Monitoring Tool R-Studio (*) CrystalDiskInfo (* ^ ) GSmartControl
Disk Partitioning - AOMEI Partition Standard Free (*) GParted (* ^ )
DOS Emulator DOSBox-X (* ^ ) D-Fend Reloaded (*) -

As you might have noticed some patterns and anomalies:

  • Most of the winners here are FLOSS and cross platform at the same time, consistently.
  • I did not mention the best for Linux file managers
  • A few of these do not have ^ which means they are not FLOSS
  • XNViewMP and Filelist Creator are rarities in that they are not FLOSS, yet are benevolent pieces of adware/spyware-free software available as cross-platform, and also XNView is the winner of 2 types of software, because it is the ultimate tool for anything to do with images. Nothing comes close, and never has.
  • SMART HDD/SSD monitoring tool is an issue on Linux, because free tools cannot do external HDDs for some reason, even though on Windows this is possible. (https://www.smartmontools.org/wiki/SAT-with-UAS-Linux) R-Studio can, but it is extremely expensive and nothing else works from my experience.
  • MS Office is the superior tool for office and document work. This is a truth we have to live with.

From https://www.freedownloadmanager.org/blog/?p=664:

It appears that a specific web page on our site was compromised by a Ukrainian hacker group, exploiting it to distribute malicious software. Only a small subset of users, specifically those who attempted to download FDM for Linux between 2020 and 2022, were potentially exposed. It’s estimated that much less than 0.1% of our visitors might have encountered this issue. This limited scope is probably why the issue remained undetected until now. Intriguingly, this vulnerability was unknowingly resolved during a routine site update in 2022.

This is critically important for everyone and is shared for wide reach.

A large chunk of the core 1% contributor base dropped Reddit.

  • I was behind migrating few of the biggest heavyweights, like datahoarder, piracy and so on.
  • I also helped cause critical damage to Reddit by being the first official subreddit, privatelife, to have migrated to Lemmy many years ago, and to have voiced against spez and reddit's CIA political agendas in plenty capacity.
  • also have been probably the only subreddit to have closed it on Reddit and made Lemmy the only official place for it.
  • I have also been one of the few core Lemmy builders during the past 3 years, doing almost everything other than software development.

My privacy community on Reddit had a staggering 12K users with an activity of 100-150 active users all the time. I sacrificed it, and about 1.3K of those moved to Lemmy. It was the only authentic privacy community on reddit, with none to replace it. r/privacy and r/privacyguides are full of bullshitters, donation stealers and harassers.

I for the first time saw a reddit alternative that was not run by right wing nutjobs or was not infested with rightwingers/freezepeachers/nazis/pedos, and had potential to make it the true reddit alternative close to what I imagined. Thanks to OG fellow comrades (you all know who you are), and thanks to the one who told me to go help Lemmy (you da goat), Lemmy is kind of what I wanted it to be. It has a good foundation.

Shortcoming of content other than memes and political bickering needs to be fixed. And people need to stop being consoomers and playing musical chairs with this problem. Try to put in some effort instead of making Lemmy yet another toilet scrolling app.

I do not think people understand. Lemmy is not going to become a forum guzzling behemoth like Reddit. Nothing will. The userbase will expand over time, as people on Reddit start getting fed up, and at some point there will be a combination of aggressive censorship (if IPO goes through) and privacy intrusive authentication. Many hobbyists do not like it, and are only quiet because they can make unidentifiable accounts, even if it requires official Reddit apps or websites to access.

People do not even understand how platforms work. Lemmy has become a non-mainstream, sane platform with federation that is not a shithole like any other previous alt-right failed Reddit clones. There is plenty activity for what are initial days, as users figure out the signup part and the cultural differences between Lemmy and Big Tech social media like Reddit. As a long term Reddit user, Reddit has been becoming shittier by the day, and is largely used due to decades of valuable posts and comments, and niche hobby communities. Ones that exclusively use frontpage are worthless audience and overlap hugely with Tiktok and Instagram users.

I just despise Mozilla and their false morality.

What about Brave CEO's inhuman immorality towards transgender people, since you do use Brave? You want to try being ethical?
