Are you using DNS over HTTPS or something?
Don't think so, just using mobile data via e-sim, doesn't work on the hotel WiFi without vpn.

I literally had no issues (no VPN either). Mind you I was using a Hong Kong SIM card, but sure if that would make a difference.
I was logging in every day. Occasionally media wouldn't load.
When was it you were in China?
Edit: cause it was this comment from four days ago where I found out that Hexbear was blocked, but only by DNS, not by IP
