Google could be working on integrating a chatbot within Google Maps, though its use cases are not currently fleshed out

Pretty much sums up most use cases for LLMs in products. Throw in "AI" because it's the gimmick right now, scream "me too!", and find a use for it later.

Honestly getting annoyed with it by now. Everyone and their dog is announcing their own AI chatbots inside their products, each one with a more derpy name than the last.
You have access to OpenAi's API, I get it already please shut up about it.

The email I got was saying how you can use it to chat with friends inside maps to plan trips or something like that and the bot would intervene

Why not just use... Messenging apps for that.

A few years ago Google got rid of a lot of their messaging apps. Now they need to make more so that they can have more.

and the clear choice for the best place to put said messaging feature is in... checks notes.. Google Maps

i can't see any way how this would be both inconvenient and possibly distracting. nope, no way.

They used to have that AI messaging arlo or whatever it was called

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Thank you.

Is it weird that I find this so unnecessary and intrusive?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

it would be weird if you didn't.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

It is haha, but I guess maybe someone who wants to be a tourist in a new place might just let the bot do the work instead of searching for things you like yourself

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

Nah, I hate AI. Over hyped, why does EVERYTHING need it...

I WANT OFF THIS RIDE

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

It's not a terrible idea. Bard is really good about answering location related questions

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Might as well just add a messaging function to Maps while they're at it.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

They already did

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Ah yes, more bloat
