It's even worse, math uses arcane terms for things that in many other fields are basically just accepted.

Galois fields? In hardware and software, those are just normal binary unsigned integers of a given bit length.

I get that GFs came about first, but when they were later implemented for computers they weren't usually (they are sometimes, mostly for carry less mul specifically, or when used for cryptography) called Galois fields, the behavior was just accepted as the default for digital logic.

My argument is not against naming things after the discoverer, though in engineering while we have some of this (Heaviside comes to mind), most other concepts have a semantic value so even unknown terms can be mapped fairly easily.

My main argument is that math is taught very poorly, if we had taught math as the history of math in school, this would be far more meaningful, we understand it as a story and each piece in the puzzle an event that brought it about.

Trespassing, possibly vandalism.

But this is the fucker who would shoot first no matter what, so probably not a great idea.

This is the hilarious tragedy of the Democratic party:

If the race is close, then the electoral college, courts and other methods can be used to bump things to the GOP (2000).

If the race isn't that close, then people will feel comfortable voting third party to "make a statement", which can cost enough votes in key states to cost the election (2016).

I'm sure that's true.

I think people in China don't think about crimes the CCP punishes with the death penalty much either.

Also, I genuinely do not believe they will do anything about Putin, for a long time.

Russians, are weird. They now see Putin as idempotent to Russia, they are the same thing.

10 years ago things would be different, but now he's just been in charge too long, and he's either the only leader people know, or the only decent leader they know (he was a huge improvement in the 2000s in their opinion, he picked Russia off of the dirt).

It's not just fear of him, Russia fears what they would be without him, they aren't like us, they don't think most people are generally trustworthy and decent, they think everybody other than them is corrupt and cheating, Putin is actually the best of the bunch, and if he's cruel, well you have to be cruel to keep the others in line.

We need to convince him to give up on Ukraine because otherwise they'll be too weak when China decides to start taking bites.

It’s just somewhat worrying that technically those crazies have access to a way to destroy the planet.

This is a problem.

And if we let them blackmail us into letting them have their way, it won't end, because they really think they need to win to make up for the costs of this war and Ukraine alone won't cover that.

They pulled the trigger on a gun they really should have let alone, the only way this ends well is if everyone understands that was a catastrophic mistake.

Although I am slightly concerned of how much power Putler has, as I’m worried he might actually be crazy enough to try to escalate. Which would mean only one thing. But he can’t be that fucking stupid and crazy, and even if he is, then it’d still require other people to make those orders happen.

Yeah, the real question is: If we don't stop Putin and Xi here, where we do we stop them? There is no better next place, Ukraine is fighting like demons, far better than we could have ever imagined.

We need Ukraine to be a bulwark for the West, a line in the sand which Russia can never dream of crossing, while we arrange our pieces in the East to ensure the peaceful status quo there.

Any mistakes and we have an escalation to a proper world war, and we're only avoiding that now at the cost of dear Ukrainian blood. We owe them so much for this, if Zelensky took that ride, domestic pressure on Xi to blockade Taiwan would have been overwhelming, and that road only goes downhill.

Yeah, it's an in-group exclusivity signifier.

Shame, math is some of the worst at this, everything is named after some guy, so there's 0 semantic associativity, you either know exactly which Gaussian term they mean, or you are completely clueless even though they just mean noise with a normal distribution.

edit: Currently in a very inter-disciplinary field where the different mathematicians have their own language which has to be translated back into first software, then hardware. It's so confusing at first till you spend 30 minutes on wikipedia to realize they're just using an esoteric term to describe something you've used forever.

No, because that's the point.

They're not weak like us, they aren't troubled by such petty details like due process and justice. This is about order more than law.

Live there for a while, you learn the sheriff is the local feudal lord, and you better bow and scrape if you want to get by.

He'll do it, but only at Fox, or better yet NewsMax.

Maybe RT actually.

So, 2 things:

  1. We need to give them permission, this is an ugly war and we can help bring it to an end, we need to do that.

  2. Our technology, particularly in guided missiles, is basically unfair compared to Russia's (mostly because of our absolutely omniscient fused targeting intel), even their best. We can pick a target and finger of death it, 30 minutes or your pizza's free.

I get why we're hesitant, us giving our missile technology to anyone is pretty unreasonable, it's like someone getting in a fist-fight, and you hand them an ar-15. But, they didn't start this fight, and the other side pulled a knife, so they've gotta finish this, one way or another.

So, this is something I understand us thinking about, even if I really want us to give them whatever they need to solve this problem ASAP.

Your honor, I would like the opportunity to interview the underaged girl accusing me of rape, privately in my basement, so we can try to reenact the crime and confirm her testamony.

Barr, who was appointed by Trump, responded “of course” when asked on CBS’s “Face the Nation” if he would be willing to appear as a witness in Trump’s trial over federal charges related to alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

The property manager, Carlos De Oliveira, is now also charged in the case. He told a Mar-a-Lago information technology expert that “‘the boss’ wanted the server deleted,” according to the revised indictment. After the employee said he did not know how to delete the footage, or whether he had the right to do so, De Oliveira restated the request from “the boss” and asked, “What are we going to do?”

This reads like AI plagiarized The Onion.

Moderates in Biden won seats are pushing to ease the abortion restrictions in the spending bill.

Interesting, puts McCarthy in a really tough spot though.

Cross-posting from news. Weird to see this kind of endorsement.

I personally consider Biden a fiscal-moderate even if his social agenda is further (but not outrageously) left. Still an odd source of support.
