.86_64 is an executable that work in any distro, so, why does it haven't the popularity that flatpak and appimage, snap have?

I calibrated my HDR settings in Microsoft and have the firmware fully updated. Should I be using HDR 1000, HDR True Black, or HDR 400 all of the time?

Still some confusing and contradicting thoughts on this monitor's console mode setting. As of the latest firmware (M3B104), I have heard you DON'T need console mode and source tone mapping as the EOTF of HDR1000 has been resolved. This is for Win 11 and Nvidia card.

BUT some people have claimed you still need console mode enabled (and not source tone mapping) and RTINGS even mentions to keep them both still:

"The Dell AW3423DWF has okay HDR brightness. These results are in the 'HDR Peak 1000' Smart HDR mode with Console Mode and Source Tone Map both enabled. While some small highlights are around 1,000 cd/m², the overall real scene peak brightness is worse than the Dell Alienware AW3423DW.

These results are with firmware M3B104, released in June 2023. It makes the image a bit brighter, but the main difference is that the EOTF tracks closer to the target PQ curve, meaning it displays images at their intended brightness. Before the update, the EOTF was brighter than the target. The firmware update also fixes the bug that caused colors to look washed out with Source Tone Map and Console Mode both disabled on previous firmware, as it performs nearly the same with those settings off with firmware M3B104. However, the EOTF is slightly different with both settings disabled, as there's a slower roll-off at the peak brightness, meaning it's tone mapping before the source does, causing highlights to be too dim."

Dell Alienware AW3423DWF Review - RTINGS.com

Thoughts? What does console mode even do if not using source tone mapping option?

Hey, everyone. Thanks for reading. Currently, the G9 Neo 49inch is on sale directly through Samsung, presumably due to the release of the new monitors. With my wife's educational pricing, I can snag this monitor for $1,174 plus tax; seems like an amazing deal.

My use cases are:

  • Work (Software Engineer using a M1 Ultra MacBook)
  • UE5 Game Development on Windows
  • Gaming with the following specs: EVGA 2080 Super I9-9900k 32gb 3600 ram 2.5tb ssd storage

I primarily play Baldurs Gate 3, Flight simulator, racing sims, and an assortment of AAA titles.

I know the 2080 super is lagging a bit behind when it comes to using the full resolution of this monitor, but I am ok turning down some graphical settings to achieve 60+ FPS.

So, 2 questions.

  1. Based on my use-cases, does this sound like a good deal?
  2. Knowing I have a 9900k and a 2080 super, will the G9 Neo be worth having knowing I'll probably upgrade my graphics card within the next 12 months? In addition, will the 9900k bottleneck 40 series cards or potentially 50 series cards?

Thanks everyone! Appreciate your time.

Howdy folks.

Does anyone have experience using a 4K blu ray player on this monitor? I’m specifically wondering if ulrawide aspect ratio and a native resolution is supported on any players and if HDR can be enabled at <4k playback.

Thanks!

Hey all, I was thinking of going for a new monitor and at first I was considering the Samsung G8. Even though I still think this is a beautiful screen, I don't think it will work for me as I want to use the screen for work 8+ hours on workdays, with mostly code in IDEs and chrome tabs on screen. I don't want to risk burn-ins and I also don't want to have the anxiety of getting burn-ins with the way I use it. Outside of work I'll mostly use if for content consumption (YouTube, Twitch, games, etc.). I think the most interesting part for me is the UW aspect of things.

I'm looking for a screen that is 1440p UW, about 34 inches, have some HDR capability, is G-Sync Compatible (not necessarily Ultimate) and has decent refresh rate (120Hz or more, I guess?) and the price to be somewhere under €1000.

I was looking at the LG UltraGear 34GN850P-B, which seems to be about €700 now and the reviews are quite good on it. Does anyone have experience with this monitor? Are there any other good options? I couldn't find that many fast, as most newer IPS screens seem to focus on 4k res or something similar. Thanks in advance!

Currently just using it for work, but looking to buy a gaming pc, is there a Minimal Viable Option when it comes to which GPU I should pick if I want to utilise the monitor to its fullest?

Horizontally gifted comrades,

I'm finally looking to step up from 34" 3440x1440 to the 38" high refresh offerings of comparable pixel density. Has anything new happened in this space that I'm missing or have we heard of anything upcoming, either in terms of bigger (40" 21:9 would be perfect for me) or faster (the 38s seem to all be <200 refresh rate). If not, what's your view of the best 38" for both gaming and productivity (productivity being the reason I'm not looking at the 34 OLEDs)?

To everyone who has the G9 OLED version:

How are your experiences so far? Do you have any concers? How is the burn-in?

Please share all your thoughts on it!

I am currently torn between the regulare G9 Neo and the G9 OLED.

I heard good things about the OLED but I don't wanna spend almost 2k without getting some feedback from users who already used them for a fair amount of time.

Hi, I bought a AW3821DW 2 weeks ago from LG C2 42 almost for work and you can see my previous review.

Now I keep both, AW3821DW for monitor and LG C2 for TV.

That's no doubt 38 IPS is better for productivity but there is no review about how 38 IPS's performance in gaming even though it's an old 2020 product.

So I tried a lot of types of game in my Steam and totally made a subjective tier rank that I hope can help you who torn between AW3821DW, AW3423DW, and LG C2.

As prerequisite, 75 contrast of monitor setting ,standard mode, use auto HDR in win11 for SDR game, set the gamma and brightness properly in game setting(importatnt).

Tier0

1.Forza Horizon 4

Racing game it's the best showcase for UW monitors, especially this game that has most bright scene with sunlight. Also tried it in LG C2, but the brightness of IPS gives me a more vivid and real experience in this game.

Forza Horizon 4

2.Monster Hunter World

Even thought this game has a lot of dark scene but it still looks good due to the popped up color of nano IPS and 21:9 aspect ratio. And in LG C2, of course looks good, but has too much ABL especially in the Volcano. I think MHW may has some issues about HDR but 3821DW looks better than LG just in this game.

MHW

3.GTAV

Oh, all things look fantastic including the night scenes. A real Los Santos!

I played this game a lot of time after bought the AW3821DW!

Perhaps because GTAV is an old game based on SDR so it's not the best showcase for OLED TV.

GTAV

4.Genshin

I didn't like this game before I bought AW3821DW but it's just the best monitor for such type of bright anime style game. LG C2 is a little bit dark for Genshin(subjectively), I prefer enjoying it with the AW3821DW. But an another dilemma is that most of JRPGs don't support the 21:9 ratio.

Genshin

Tier1

1.WOW

AW3821DW is the best monitor for WOW, an old SDR game, with many static elements and much text, doesn't need high contrast, and the most important--no fear of burn in.

I played this game about 8 hours a day when I was a student in Shadowland. When I'm in a RAID, I will keep playing about 4 to 6 hours without any break. I cannot talk to my guild master that I need to take a rest because I'm using a fXXking OLED monitor!

So if you are a junkie of WOW like me, I highly recommend this monitor to you. In some dark scenes you still notice the bleed but it's acceptable.

WOW

2.Planent Zoo

Like the WOW, this type of game has so many static elements and much text, really benefit from the additional width. This type of sim game doesn't have many dark scene and almost looks no difference between OLED and IPS.

Tier2

1.Skyrim

38 IPS is OK for RPG game with 50% of bright scene and 50% of dark scene.

Yeah, no doubt that LG C2 looks better in the Skyrim than IPS.

Skyrim

2.Bioshock Infinite

This game is an another type of story-driven game.

I don't hate the experience with AW3821DW but the Bioshock looks really awesome in LG C2.

It's not a type of game that you spend over 100 hours so I prefer to enjoying it with OLED.

Bioshock Infinite

Tier3

1.COD MWII / BF2042

This type of shooter that can put the HUD in the middle is PLAYABLE in 38 IPS but overall 38 is not a good choice for competitive shooter.

The big size and additional width can give you more fun but cannot make you win and it really make you tired so I always take a rest after playing 30 minutes.

But LG C2 is also not good for competitive shooter because of the size and 120HZ framerate.

If you have space I recommend to have an another 27's WOLED 240Hz just for FPS. It's my drame setup!

2.Diablo4

D4 is horrible for this monitor. You can always notice the IPS glow or bleed.

Actually I didn't play D4 anymore after buying this monitor.

3.Baldur's Gate3

A lot of you will be disappointing because BG3 is also not good for this monitor subjectly.

In bright scene, it's good but in dungeon the bleed is noticeable.

But BG3 is a fXXking beautiful game. I dive into the world and can forget the fXXking bleed!

For me, the solution is to play BG3 in the daytime and play other games in the nighttime.

BG3(bright scene)

BG3(dark scene)

Overall, AW3821DW is better for SDR-based old game. But we don't have a 38 inch miniled IPS or OLED in the market.

How about AW3423DW? I didn't try it but with my experience with old 34's, I suppose that 38's is more immersive, sharp(even though the same PPI), and versatile than 34's QD-OLED. But I still want to try when the 2nd gen comes out.

So if you want a good balance between work and game, the 38's IPS is still a good choice.

Let me know if you have other games that want to know its experience with AW3821DW!

Hi,

I am looking to buy a Ultrawide monitor for 1440p. I don't want to spend too much on the monitor. 450 is my budget. Prefer going as low as possible without losing too much features. I was looking at the AOC CU34G2X and Gigabyte G34WQC.

What's the better one between the two? Is there any better alternatives than these two?

Hey

So I'm thinking of getting an Ultra wide monitor for gaming

I have always thought they looked cool (but I have never used one) and years ago I almost got one but then I started streaming on twitch and needed 2 monitors so I left the idea alone

But I'm no longer streaming so now I'm thinking of swapping out my two 27" monitors for a 32" ultrawide

It would be used mainly for console (via capture card) and PC gaming, and general PC use. I don't use my PC for work (not since covid)

what do you guys think?

should I make the switch?

Is there anything I should take into consideration first?

Now obviously this monitor has not been in use for the ENTIRE 11000+ hours, however it is used as a daily driver for both WFH as a secondary screen and mainly for gaming.

HDR is only ever on when either playing games or watching HDR content, this is always in HDR1000 mode. When in SDR for desktop and work use brightness is set to 20-50% depending on how bright my room is that day (I have a bay window so I get a ton of light in the day)

After all this time I have avoided any (Obvious) burn in, Ive ran the pixel and panel refreshes like clock work for its entire life time. My desktop wallpaper is a pure black background with a DVD logo bouncing around so nothing is ever left static for too long, the monitor is also set to sleep after 5 mins.

Any question please feel free to ask.

Im battling eye strain with my new Alienware AW3423DWF and im afraid i found a culprit.

Rtings review says that "monitor isnt technically flicker free, but its on-and-off flicker and you wont notice it" and they gave it 10 rate in that matter.

I recorded my DWF (default settings, 50% brightness SDR) in slowmo next to mine old IPS truly flicker free:

Alienware AW3423DWF flickering slowmo 120 fps - YouTube

Brightness doesnt matter, its doing the same thing on 100% SDR.

My eyes tell me that is far from not noticing it :( Can you please help me checking if its just my unit or maybe an OLED thing and my eyes are too sensitive.

If you have slowmo recording in your phone can you check if its doing the same thing in your unit? It has to be slowmo, normal video recording in my iPhone doesnt catch that flickering.

I've been debating ultrawide for years and I'm finally ready to pull the trigger. I think 32:9 is way too wide for me so I'm looking at 21:9 (I so wish there was a 25:9!). I currently have a 2560x1440 main (and a second at the same resolution in portrait mode), and I'm thinking about picking up the 34" Alienware OLED... I'm wondering if there's a good reason to consider something else or to wait. I'd love to get a wider monitor, and the 38" might be an ok compromise (I'd prefer it's not much taller, in reality), but I think I'd want more than 1440p vertically and there's nothing on the market for that today.

Semi-related, I have an RTX2070. Will that be able to drive it ok?

Hey 👋 all. Just bought this monitor and it looks awesome in game. The issue is I’m a content creator and my Logitech Brio webcam won’t fit because of the weird way the back panel is made and the super thin bezels. I also need help with recording in 16:9 but playing in 21:9. I spent around 4 hours today trying to set things up but when I play a game in a window it sits in the middle of my screen, can I push it to the far right or left and have OBS up in the remainder? I love the HDR and look but I’m fearing I made a big mistake for my YouTube channel and content creation. Can anyone here give me tips or help me? 🙏🙏🙏

Does anybody else have both monitors? Do you use them at the same time? If so, how do you arrange them? How can I stack them to make my set up look nice? My desk space is just as wide as the G9. It is a rising desk. I'm going to need some creative input from you fine people!

Please send some links of your suggestion. Let me know which arms or stands to buy. I'd much prefer to get table top stands instead of arms. I have a glass top desk and clamps aren't really the best option for it.

would you guys trade OLED for the new 57" ? i am really tempted to get it. would you consider it too much a downgrade / sidegrade to go from 0.01ms response time 1440p OLED to a 4k VA ? really torn in this one

Hey just collected my g9 oled, I see for the neo/earlier models a pretty beastly (in terms of price) monitor arm was needed, ergotron hx w/ hd pivot was the most highly recommended, is this still needed considering the oled is considerably lighter … any recommendations?

I'm seeking assistance in selecting an ultrawide monitor and would greatly appreciate your recommendations.

I'm currently torn between two options:

  • LG 49WQ95C-W
  • Neo G9

However, I'm beginning to wonder if a 49-inch monitor might be too large for my needs, as my requirements are quite varied, making the decision challenging.

I'd like to ask for your suggestions based on the following criteria:

  • Software development tasks (where I believe an IPS panel would be the ideal choice)
  • KVM functionality (for seamless switching between my MacBook and PC, with the ability to switch peripherals across 2 or 3 different computers)
  • A higher refresh rate for casual FPS gaming

Despite defining these requirements, I'm finding it difficult to locate a monitor that meets all three criteria. As a result, I'm considering dropping the KVM requirement due to the rarity of monitors that fulfill all these aspects.

I'm also contemplating a switch from using two 2K monitors to a single ultrawide display. I'm uncertain whether a 49-inch monitor might prove to be too large, and I'm considering alternatives in the 38-40 inch range. Unfortunately, during my visits to local stores, the largest curved ultrawide monitor they had on display was 34 inches, preventing me from evaluating the larger options in person.

I would be extremely grateful if you could recommend a suitable monitor based on my needs. Thank you so much!

Hi, i was wondering what settings you use for gaming?

Im trying to decide if i should continue using g sync with vrr control off for the lowest input lag and suffer some flickering (specially in menus in game) or if i should disable both vrr control and g sync?

But id love to see what settings people rock :-)
