Spondulix is 19th-century slang for money or cash, more specifically a reasonable amount of spending money. Spondulicks, spondoolicks, spondulacks, spondulics, and spondoolics are alternative spellings, and spondoolies is a modern variant.

I don't like the title, quoting

With the resolution, compounding pharmacies are no longer able to produce tirzepatide. And the FDA highlighted the point to the drug makers, writing in bold that the agency "reminds compounders of the legal restrictions on making copies of FDA-approved drugs."

In an acerbic federal lawsuit filed in Texas this week, an industry group representing large compounding pharmacies—aka outsourcing facilities—blasted the FDA for removing tirzepatide from the shortage list. The group, the Outsourcing Facilities Association, along with a Texas-based compounder, argue that the tirzepatide is still in short supply and that the FDA blindly accepted the word of Lilly—a company that is "self-interested in monopolizing the market." The compounders back up the claim by noting that the FDA warned in its announcement that "intermittent localized supply disruptions" could continue.

The compounders called the FDA's announcement "a reckless and arbitrary decision—lacking any semblance of lawful process," which would "deprive patients of a vital treatment for type 2 diabetes and obesity, two of the most common and harmful medical conditions in existence."

The compounders also claimed that the FDA broke administrative law by not allowing a public comment or notice period, not providing evidence of sufficient supply, not explaining its decision-making process, and not publishing its decision in the Federal Register.

It could be that many tornados have been near schools, (justifying the drills), but only that many have actually hit the schools (which would be catastrophic without the drills)

wow...

I used three throwaway words at the start, and then tried to finish one word every time. After a while you get so many letters, the other words come together.

Not sure if that strategy will work every day

Larry is still around, but this new cat might be in training for the role

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/larry-the-cat-downing-street-death-b2602158.html

Downing Street officials are preparing a “media plan” to announce the eventual passing of Larry the cat.

Larry has become a widely loved fixture of Downing Street and is often seen outside the door to Number 10 during major political events and news broadcasts.

The 17-year-old ‘chief mouser’ is thought to be in his final years, having already outlived the average lifespan for a tabby cat.

While one source said that, at present, Larry is “doing OK”, another said: “We felt it had to be handled so sensitively.”

An extra fun fact:

The cat, who was adopted from Battersea Cats Home, was first brought into Downing Street by David Cameron as a pet for his children and has since outlasted five prime ministers.

Helping writers and journalists

In this version we’re introducing a new way to highlight writers and journalists on the fediverse. By adding a single line to their HTML, publishers can feature the fediverse profile of the page author in the link previews on Mastodon. That way, when lots of different people are sharing the link, or the link is trending in the News tab, you can easily navigate to the author’s fediverse profile and follow them right from within Mastodon to receive future updates. Publications like The Verge and TechCrunch are already using this.

We’ve also put a fresh coat of paint on our website embeds. You’ve always been able to embed a Mastodon post on your own website, but we’ve made them look a lot better and gave them a more graceful fallback when the source is slow to load or no longer available. Of course, the dialog for embedding a post now looks a lot better as well, offering a simple click to copy button. Keep in mind that you can only embed posts that are public!

Well that's cool!

Lots of great suggestions here already

I haven't seen mobile editing mentioned yet:

  • ImageToolbox for a very good Android image editing tool

  • Fossify Gallery for some quick editing tools built into the gallery

  • While not directly for editing, Tidy on android allows for AI search locally

  • Termux for any CLI edits (imagemagick, etc.)

B.C. libraries have been targeted by a hacker who demanded a ransom or they would release user data that includes the phone numbers and email addresses of some clients.

The Cariboo Regional District says its library was among those involved, and data was obtained about users who received automated notifications from the library between March 27 and April 19.

The BC Libraries Cooperative says “minimal data” from its email server was obtained.

“Regardless of any limitations on data breached, we regret this breach happening at all,” the co-operative statement says.

In a suit filed in federal court on April 3, RCMP officer and vice-president of the National Police Federation Peter Merrifield and retired Vancouver police detective Paul MacNamara allege the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) “pursued a politically motivated agenda designed to show that it was taking a hard line on foreign interference from China.”

“Rather than examining and verifying actual information, CSIS simply made incomplete, inaccurate, misleading and false assertions about the Plaintiffs, and provided them to the Plaintiffs’ employers, knowing full well the harm that would follow,” the suit claims.

Despite his current challenge, if you take the long view of McNamara’s career, his achievements are nothing short of extraordinary.

“Homicides, ‘Mr. Bigs,’ drug cases, stock market files,” he said of the various file types he handled in his policing career.

McNamara’s reputation got him a job running security at us consulates in Canada, and his post-policing life appeared secure until a routine security clearance came back denied. He claims Canada’s spy agency, CSIS was responsible.

McNamara believes his friendship with former RCMP officer Bill Majcher compelled CSIS to tank his career. While Majcher has been charged with foreign interference related to his work in China, McNamara has never been accused of anything, let alone a plot by Beijing to interfere in Canada. Now he is suing the federal government.

“Twenty-six years of being a protector for Canadians results in a knife in my back from the very agencies that are supposed to protect us,” he said.

Sick notes place an unnecessary burden on doctors and patients, physicians' organizations say

Family doctors frustrated with writing sick notes have created a template letter for patients to give to their employers, explaining that the notes place an unnecessary burden on physicians during an ongoing primary-care crisis.

They are also calling on the province to restrict when and how employers can ask for sick notes.

Many family doctors spend between 20 and 30 per cent of their day doing paperwork, Ali says, and filling out sick notes only adds to that.

Also, having to leave the house to get a note does not allow the sick person to rest, Ali said, and the task is made even more difficult for those who don't have a family doctor and have to wait in walk-in clinics. "A person who feels under the weather — the last thing they want to do is possibly get on a bus, or into their vehicle, or ask someone for a ride to go to their doctors office," said Ali.

As of 2023, employers in Nova Scotia are only allowed to request a sick note if the absence is more than five consecutive work days.

New legislation in Ontario, meanwhile, will force employers to scrap sick notes for the three days of provincially mandated annual sick leave. The Ontario government is moving to ban sick notes for short-term illness, in an effort to cut down on paperwork for family doctors.

In a statement sent to CBC News, B.C.'s Ministry of Labour said employers are able to request "reasonably sufficient proof" of illness, but are encouraged to be thoughtful about when they request sick notes.

It did not respond to questions about whether it is considering legislation to ban or restrict asking for sick notes.
