What? I have winco down the block.. I'll check for it next time I'm there.

Edit: confirmed not at our WinCo

Thankfully we can federate bot posts to make that easier :P

I live in the USA and can confirm never seeing this before.

Though I'd try it tbh

This reminds me of when a coworker wrote a protocol around sending encrypted messages back and forth inside of gchat to control another PC.

The reason was that: our company firewall doesn't let stuff go in directly, but we have internet.

I thought that was a nutty tos violation.

Each system had a Google account and would login and listen for messages from the controller.

For example, I opt out of all emails from a website. A year later they make a new newsletter and auto subscribe all to it.

I login, hit unsubscribe, then report as spam in my email client.

I figure auto adding me is more/less spamming me. Do y'all agree?

Probably bureaucracy. Also an inability to pivot even when things make no sense. Everything is a giant freight train that has very little ability to change direction or stop.

Oh and of course a healthy taste of not being transparent or honest.

Source: I used to work there years ago.

At one point I thought that if the Government was giving money for EV chargers, they would be either at-cost or free to use.

One of the first built was at a Flying J truck stop in Ohio.

I looked on plug share and found one in Hubbard, OH and it's 67c per kwh (https://www.plugshare.com/location/582660). The average cost of electricity in that area is less than 15c per kwh. At that kind of price, gas could be a cheaper option.

Why does the government subsidize in a way where already wealthy companies get public money to build chargers, and make a ton more money off the rest of us?

(This is not a political statement at all. I just don't understand why public money goes to make certain private folks more wealthy. I figure I must be missing something).

Thanks for your thoughts!

It's a bit odd, but isn't it equivalent to forking and putting up a fork elsewhere?

I guess I don't see the problem.

Anyone having a new issue where swiping from the left to go back to the thread list from a thread doesn't load properly and instead shows a black screen for a second or so.

So I was using a wood sealer (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01AQTX3XU) on my newly built catio. Unfortunately I didn't notice how much I had sprayed on the adjacent window.

Now I have cloudy/foggy windows (https://imgur.com/a/TKD9wim). I've tried cleaning them with:- - - -

  • water via the hose directly on the window.. very little progress
  • windex.. very little progress
  • dish soap followed by host.. very little progress
  • vinegar.. very little progress

Any ideas for what might get this stuff off easily?---

Anyone here use fidelity (https://www.fidelity.com/)? I had to call to get something done with my account and thought it was weird that they have you (more/less) T9 dial your password into the system, though its not real T9 in that (for example) one press of 2 would mean either a,A,b,B,c,C,2. They say for special characters just give a * sign.

Any thoughts on if that is safe on their part? It seems weird to me since they either need the password in plaintext on their end or I guess the hash of the T9 version of the password which would be less secure anyways because of: all one case and only one type of 'special character'.

And yes: before you ask this was 100% the actual fidelity phone number: +1 800-343-3548

In their defense they did ask for other verification information once I got a person, but still felt really weird.

Any thoughts on the security of this mechanism?

So instead of spending X dollars to ensure people have homes, we spend X++ dollars to evict them from their spaces?

Mlmym instance? (sh.itjust.works)
submitted 6 months ago by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

Hey folks,

Is it possible to have a mlmym endpoint for sh.itjust.works? Maybe old.sh.itjust.works?

I know the lemmy ui has come a decent ways.. but sometimes I just want to look at it like old reddit.

lemmy.world has one: https://old.lemmy.world/

If not: no big deal. if so: would be cool.

Looking for a keyboard (sh.itjust.works)
submitted 6 months ago by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

It's a sad day: My previous mechanical keyboard more/less died. Multiple keys just stopped working and even upon replacing them with new switches: still dead.

So anyways I'm looking for a keyboard with some specific features:

Anyone know of one that is:

  • full size (extra macro keys would be a bonus!)
  • rgb backlit
  • has at least one usb port on it (so it has a builtin hub of sorts) Super bonus if it also has a type c passthrough port.
  • user-swapable cherry-mx compatible switches. (bonus if it comes with browns)
  • bonus points if it can run open-source firmware
  • bonus points if it has a volume spinner-thing

I know its asking a bunch, but hey if someone has seen one of these, or has ideas: let me know.

Budget: idk, but I'd be willing to pay probably $200 ish if it was a perfect match and seemed legit.

Thanks in advance

Public road = need car registered.. and everything else.

If they just wanted to drive in circles on their private property, who cares.

Maybe if the license plate had been at a 45 degree angle.

If you are for Musk being tracked, you should be fine with her being tracked the same way.

I'm for anyone in a private jet being tracked.

Hey folks,

Does anyone know of an app (FOSS or otherwise) that has a built-in REST-server to get current device info?

I'd like to be able to hit the API from within my local network to get info including:

  • Free space vs used space
  • Battery percentage

Why?

I have an old Android device that sits in the closet as a Syncthing node. It does some other random stuff too. I don't really want to have to get up and look at it to find out certain information. I already have a VNC server running on it. I even have a (sketchy) SSH server on it that I currently call df -h on to programmatically get free space info. The SSH server has some weirdness where it seems to stop working after some time, among other oddities. Also it can't get battery level afaict.

I imagine this is possible using ADB, but I don't really want to have to always leave the device in wireless ADB mode or manually put it in that mode each time; unless that is easier than I think.

Thanks!

Obligatory: this was yesterday (1/20/24)

In the US 1/20/24 was the last day to buy stamps at the old postage rate. The flat rate for postcards was 51 cents and was going up to 53 cents the next day.

They have a concept called forever stamps for regular letters and a similar thing for postcards. If you buy them today at today's price, you can use them at any time in the future regardless of price increases. So if you'll mail letters or postcards, they're a good deal and future investment.

So anyways we ran to the post office at 4pm. The office was closed except for the self service machine. We need about 90 postcard stamps so I figured I'd get 100 to have some extras for the future.

I was so excited to see postcard stamps for 51 cents. I took a picture: https://i.imgur.com/M997Nfg.jpeg

So we bought 100, which happened to be the most we can buy at once.

At that point the machine began printing 100 individual 51 cents stamps.

Now you may have noticed the issue: it wasn't 100 postcard stamps, but rather 100 stamps each saying 51 cents of value.

It took a long time as each stamp was printed one by one, but I got to stand there sad as I didn't get my forever postcard stamps.

Now to mail my postcards, I'll need to buy 2 cents of postage each (or more when it goes up again). I'll be more careful next time.

Tldr: I bought 51 cent stamps instead of postcard stamps for 51 cents.

Edit: commented with an update after a few days.

He has no power to do anything really. I'm starting to think more socialism makes sense. I kind of want profit limits on certain essential sectors like food, medicine, probably others.

I'm tired of hearing about how company X made 3 billion more this quarter than last year. It's one thing to be profitable and make something, it's another to give it all to the execs and make consumers eat more year after year.

Raising prices to raise profits when you're still profitable is ridiculous and greedy.

I don't see how Biden could fix the situation on his own. It needs a massive change.

An electrician 'fixed' an issue by making this hole in a basement cinder block wall.

.. how do I put that box back in or fix the wall or something?

Inside the box are two capped (hot) wires.

The pipe seems to be copper. Doesn't bend or anything. It can't (at least easily) be pushed back in.

I had wanted to use cement paste.. but like what do I do about the box? I guess I could paste everything except the metal pipe but geez: then i still have this sketchy box hanging out.

Any ideas?
