The East Antarctic ice sheet has by contrast been constantly growing since records began, which is probably where you got your factoid from. But this is due to local phenomena, such as the Antarctic ozone hole, increasing westerly wind strength and increasing snowfall. East Antarctica is one of the few regions which seems to have escaped the effects of climate change (so far).
