My phone is either lying around, in my pocket or in my car most of the time. The times when I carry it outdoors in my hand are not many. And shouldn't the sensor be less than 5 cm away from something, and you have to select the kind of material that you want to measure?
There were so many times I wished my phone had a thermometer.

It's probably there just to make sure the phone doesn't overheat and they're trying to spin it into a selling point to increase the price of the phone
Sensors are usually already present alongside chips and controllers in modern phones and PCs for that very purpose, the temperature sensor on the Pixel 8 has nothing to do with that.
There are temperature sensors inside every device already.
