I think, the choose-your-own-adventure experience also just has to do with personal differences.
My skin produces a lot of oil, so if I want to adhere to the beauty standard of non-oily hair and don't want my face to go pimply, I have to wash it at least daily. And I can use the hardest soaps out there and don't get dry skin (if anything my body produces even more oil).
At the same time, a while ago I watched a video of a guy who had the best experience just not really washing his head. His hair was somewhat greasy, but less than mine after a day, and well, it was fitting to his style anyways (others would have bought a product to look greasy like that).
Just make sure, the cosmetics industry doesn't sell you on complete horseshit, like regularly using soap to remove the oil and then a moisturizer to put it back in.
