Hey Lemmy!

What's that one song comes on the radio or party and you're filled with joy? Or perhaps it's a carol and it makes you feel alright. What is it?

Then there's the song that makes you flinch and cringe, and you've gotta shut that song down. What is it?

Your favorite and your despised!

Favorite: Same Old Lang Syne by Dan Folgelberg

Worst: Dominic the Donkey

Hee Haw, Hee Haw!

...this dumbass song was in the holiday rotation at my old job. I didn't quit because of it, but the thought crossed my mind several times a shift.

I like "altfel de colind" and dislike the music that the Grinch complained about

White Wine in the Sun by Tim Minchan (?) Everything else off

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 hours ago

Everything else 😆

There is a particular version of Carol of the Bells I quite like.

Also, the Trans Siberian Orchestra turned out a couple great tracks as well.

There are a few tracks by Frank Sinatra that sometimes get played as Christmas music which I won't tolerate. I've never heard a Sinatra song I don't physically hate.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

The physical reaction to Sinatra 😆 Is the Carol of the Bells instrumental or vocal? Are you thinking of John Williams' version from Home Alone?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 7 hours ago

The Home Alone version is in the ballpark; the version I'm thinking of I'm pretty sure was on a CD of Christmas music my parents had. The Home Alone version sounds like it was sung by a children's choir. Then you get a lot of this version that is women plus instruments. The version I'm thinking of was choir only, ran a little faster, and had men in the choir. The sopranos still did most of the work but having some bass in the counter melody and chorus took the power up a notch.

I'm gonna see if I can find that CD today.

After growing up with a bunch of retail workers and hearing all their horror stories, I generally try to avoid all the "classic" Christmas tunes as long as possible - the only ones I ever seek out are Christmas At Ground Zero by Weird Al Yankovic, and Straight No Chaser's album from 2009.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 21 hours ago

ms parker by chance the rapper is so smooth... honestly people sleep on his christmas album...

and as someone that has worked at a store... you already know.

New fave Christmas jam - Megan Trainor feat. Earth, Wind and Fire - Holidays

All time fave - Dominick the Donkey

Please never again - Mariah Carey anything.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 day ago

Please never again - Mariah Carey anything.

😆

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 day ago

Mariah Carey has been so overdone she's now Pariah Carey.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Does anyone actually play Dominick the Donkey?

The only time I've ever heard it was whenever someone else says "What's Dominick the Donkey?" and someone finds it on YouTube.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

On my personal playlist, along with "Nestor, the Long Ear Donkey".

[–] [email protected] 2 points 21 hours ago

On: Chiron Beta Prime Off: The Mariah Carey song

[–] [email protected] 2 points 23 hours ago

On: A Marshmallow World by Dean Martin. Off: Grandma Got Ran Over By a Reindeer.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

On: Xmas has been X’ed by NoFX Off: All others

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

I say that but, as far as holiday records go, the Ventures’ Christmas album is pretty stellar. https://youtu.be/dkeJiDwAnWc

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 day ago

my favorites are Christmas Wrapping, Last Christmas (never got the hate!) and basically everything off of the Phil Spector and Mannheim Steamroller records. (edit: and Brian Setzer! how could i forget!) the only ones i really dislike are All I Want For Christmas Is You and any time someone covers and upbeat christmas song as an acoustic ballad- people think that's an easy way to make something emotional and meaningful but it actually takes a lot of skill to pull of, and i've yet to hear anyone pull it off with a Christmas song!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

I like Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett's version of Baby It's Cold Outside. I try to avoid most other Christmas songs, but especially Mariah Carey. I also worked in a department store for five years, so lots of bad memories of Christmas songs for months.

Ballad of New York - The Pogues

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

My must have is Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Christmas Eve Sarajevo

https://youtu.be/2LbmhneqBnE

It's easily overplayed, but if I can get away with hearing it 3 times through December, it's great!

Can't stand... Not going to link Maria Carey.

Edit, also not going to link (gagging) Christmas Shoes (vomits)

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I worked retail for a decade. I can't imagine intentionally listening to any Christmas song after that.

At my current job they played them through the whole shift today (luckily only today), and the two that really got to me were "All I want for Christmas is you" (don't know the actual title, but 3 different recordings of it played) and that one nasally bitch with the death wish.

Avoid: The Christmas Shoes

Jam: Oi to the World by The Vandals

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

The whole Xmas With the Vandals album is great. Shoutout to the Angry Snowmans, too.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

One of these years I'm going to make it to the Vandals Christmas Formal

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

I want to get a kindergarten class to sing “Grandpa’s Last Christmas”

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 day ago

Avoid - last Christmas. It's not a Christmas song. It just happens to be at that time of year. It's depressing and whiney and over played (even if it wasn't irrelevant).

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago

That Spirit of Christmas, by Ray Charles. Featured in the attic projector scene in Christmas Vacation

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

A must-sing-along fav: Christmas Wrapping - The Waitresses

Never again: that one about the boy buying shoes for his dying mother (not even gonna link)

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

Oh my goodness, Christmas Shoes is the worst.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

Best of all time - God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen - Annie Lennox

Any version of the Little Drummer Boy must be cleansed from the earth with fire and poison.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

There is only one, sadly does not make it on the radio.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago

Proper Crimbo by Bo Selecta is my jam.

The one to turn off is Feliz Navidad, I don’t know how it’s made its way to the UK lately. I don’t know anyone who likes it but I think it turns up on a lot of Spotify playlists when people search Christmas music.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 20 hours ago) (1 children)

Awaken - Dethklok

Edit: my turn off song is all I want for Christmas by Mariah Carey

[–] [email protected] 2 points 21 hours ago

Musta Krakish

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago

Favorites: Bing Crosby and the Andrews Sisters - Mele Kalikimaka and The Drifters - White Christmas.

Least Favorite: I don't think i have one. Can even listen to Mariah once or twice. It is Christmas after all.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Heat Miser - Big Bad Voodoo Daddy

Went to their concert a couple weeks ago. I've never heard anyone play that song in concert. I love that song & movie.

Had enough of "Feliz Navidad".

Merry Christmas!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Shipshewana? I just saw that show, too! My family watched The Year Without Santa Claus yesterday and the music was so great. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy did a great job, it was awesome

[–] [email protected] 2 points 22 hours ago

The concert was: Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.

A few favorites that don't get a ton of play:

A Soalin' by Peter Paul and Mary

Christmas Is Now Drawing Near at Hand by Steve Winwood

Ding! Dong! Merrily on High by pretty much any choir is so festive

Edit: broke out my Tony Bennett Christmas vinyl this year and was happy to discover Christmasland, which feels like it deserves to be a classic.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

Ding Dong! Merrily on High is such a good one! Gotta check out the others too, especially Mr. Bennett. Thanks!

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm a big queen fan and I love Thank God it's Christmas. I also love Jona Lewie's Stop The Cavalry, which isn't really a Christmas song, but only gets played at Christmas. Bing Crosby's White Christmas is my favourite traditional recording. Feliz Navidad by Jose Feliciano needs to be binned forever.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

It's got the word 'Christmas' in it, so it must be a Christmas song!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

“Christmas Eve” - Tatsuro Yamashita

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

I've been saying it for years, the only good Christmas song is Christmas Wrapping by The Waitresses.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

I heard a new one this year (or new to me anyway) which basically has the word "joy" over and over. Googling is failing me, as the word joy is used for pretty much anything Xmas related.

Anyway, as it was new, I don't hate it yet.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

I like a lot of Christmas songs, but I'd probably just go for a good carol - Ding Dong Merrily On High, Hark the Herald Angels Sing, Good King Wenceslas, that sort of thing.

Songs to turn off:

  • Fairytale of New York
  • Last Christmas
  • 2000 Miles (The Pretenders)
  • Do They Know It's Christmas
  • Stop the Cavalry
