In @[email protected], we provide a set of search engine choices. It differs a bit from country to country, but generally we have a nice set of search engines to choose from.

I would advice that you select one of the smaller search engines. They are generally better when it comes to privacy and you are supporting an alternative to Big Tech, although most of them get their search feeds from either Google or Microsoft at this time. That also means that switching from Google or Bing will allow you to get similar search results, while stepping away from Big Tech, so the switching cost should be lower.

So what is your favorite search engine?

@[email protected] @[email protected] If you consider the overwhelming majority of people who use Google search, this result unfortunately also shows what a small bubble we are in here.

Not a bubble, just a nice place. We must invite more people to join us.

Favorite to use: DuckDuckGo.
Favorite that almost certainly shouldn’t be in the default list: https://clew.se/

@[email protected] @[email protected] Searching directly on wikipedia is surprisingly effective at getting at information – as opposed to content farms cashing in from showing ads.

There is a reason why we include Wikipedia as well. It is good for many things. So is adding vertical search engines, which is easy to do in Vivaldi. You can then access them all quickly through the search engine shortcuts.

@[email protected] @[email protected] Thank you. Another one would be to search directly into the wayback machine of the webarchive.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

@[email protected] @[email protected]

You can add that as well. You have to add it manually, but I tested it and it works well.

@[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] I do this when I want to know about someone or something named, which is a big chunk of what would otherwise be general web searches. I go directly to the Wikipedia app on my phone, and it's a far better scanning / reading experience most of the time.

@[email protected] @[email protected] I really like Ecosia. I find that the results are still good and I feel good about supporting a company that is trying to make a positive change for the environment.

@[email protected] @[email protected] Brave Search, there is nothing more private and free than this search engine.

@[email protected] I know it's paid so maybe that makes it a bit of problem. But I switched to @[email protected] and honestly haven't looked back.

@[email protected] @[email protected] I voted #DuckDuckGo because it's the one I use but it's not ideal, they've added ads and "AI" recently and you can't remove a word from search (using "-" which works on google or at least used to).
Might try Ecosia next but is it really environmentally-friendly? It does look like green washing a bit..

@[email protected] @[email protected] I’m getting some good results from #Mojeek. Any chance you could add that to the Vivaldi search engine list please?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

@DawnBlackbirds @Vivaldi

We continue to evaluate the list of search engines we include. We will have to see what happens in the future.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

@[email protected] @[email protected] No problem! If you don’t ask, you don’t get 😁

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

@[email protected] @[email protected] I’m currently a big @[email protected] fan for my search needs.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

@[email protected] @[email protected]
Currently none. I've used Startpage for a while, but they seem to have problems (not responding or select the road sign garbage, maybe under DDOS?), so right now it's Mojeek when I'm feeling lucky, and Google when that doesn't give me anything useful.

I would probably go back to Google if they would stop pestering me with consent nag screens.

@[email protected] @[email protected]

in the beginning of this year, I'd say DDG ... but nowadays, I'm less convinced of it. It feels like I'm ending up in just another search bubble again.

I'm been testing out Qwant a little bit. But not convinced yet.

Yahoo, Google and Startpage is out of the question for me. I don't trust either of them in regards to privacy. I would like to add Bing to this not-wanted list, but that implicitly impacts DDG.

@jon @Vivaldi @kagihq Kagi! Always and forever. ❤️

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

@[email protected] @[email protected], apart of Andi as main search (it's philosophy and ethics me remember a lot of the ones of Vivaldi, despite using AI), I use Startpage, mainly for images, Mojeek and some other specific ones. I don't use Google search since at least 10 years, nor Bing, which anyway don't have so reliable results.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

@[email protected] @[email protected] I am currently really enjoying Kagi.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

@[email protected] @[email protected] I use Exodus as my default, but I use Google once in a while if I need a really quick search result

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

@[email protected] Other: brave search seems to work decent

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

@[email protected] @[email protected] I use Kagi, and think it would be great if Vivaldi included it at some point. It’s a paid search engine, but I love how it surfaces actual results to the top, and not just blogspam.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

@[email protected] @[email protected] I use the Ecosia search because Ecosia GmbH invests 80 percent of its profits in tree plantations worldwide. And Vivaldi and Eosia have a partnership. Privacy is also very important.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

@[email protected] @[email protected] It is also great to configure own searches with search parameters for the context search in the settings (sorry, screenshots with German text).

There is only room for that many choices, which is why I included other as well.

@[email protected], @[email protected], what do you think of Monocles (monocles.de)? It is an EU based search engine.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago
[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

@[email protected] @[email protected] I selected DuckDuckGo, but I try to use Mojeek as much as possible. I think Europe should have its own search engine, and stop relying on the American Big Tech. But I do prefer DuckDuckGo :)

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

@[email protected] @[email protected] Startpage for primary (better Mandarin search result) and secondary DuckduckGo

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

@[email protected] I voted for Ecosia because that's what I had been on for several years now but recent weeks I have been using Kagi as someone here gave me access to Kagi membership (Thanksgiving offer) and i tell you what its growing on me. When I was on Ecosia I use to occasionally search Google through incognito to get the result i was looking for but I no longer feel the need! Kagi is good, really good!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

@[email protected] @[email protected] I have three favorites, but Google and Bing are NOT among them!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

@[email protected] @[email protected] Kagi. No ads, no spam and spot on results (and offers real useful filtering tools when needed).

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 weeks ago

@[email protected] @[email protected] The independent search index of brave is my favourite, Mojeek and metager notable other search engines.
Unfortunately searx instances seem to be regularly blocked by the index providers.

Seriously though. I've had a good couple of years using it so far (search results, that is).

@[email protected] @[email protected] I'd love to see a default option for @[email protected]. It's been my search engine of choice for a year and is worth the $.
