Saying that whatever Trump does is political suicide misses the biggest issue with this election-

Nobody cares what either of them say because an awful lot of the electorate simply isn't listening.

The Trump voters would keep voting for Trump even if he joined the Nazi party. The rest of voters have either tuned out or are pushing Kamala simply because she's not Trump so she must be better.
An awful lot of people have just made up their minds and aren't listening for anything new.

So having a headline that Trump says something offensive is news to nobody. What would have been political suicide a decade or two ago is business as usual today. Whatever standards we once have politicians to, we no longer hold them to.

[–] [email protected] 22 points 2 days ago (1 children)

If you still think anything trump could do is political suicide, you are too naive to be writing about politics.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago

It's the Daily Beast, afterall. Not even Wikipedia considers them reliable.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 2 days ago

Saying that you could stand out in the middle of 5th avenue and shoot somebody dead I did not affect your campaign should equally have been political suicide.

Political suicide is dead.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Nothing is political suicide for Trump. He was right when he said he could shoot someone on 5th Ave and he wouldn't lose any supporters. His followers are a cult and the only way they would stop following him is if he somehow turned brown or black.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

He even said "take the guns now, proper process later" ad didn't even lost NRA support

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

Obviously. The NRA is a racist organization more than a gun one if you actually scrutinize it.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 days ago

On the contrary, this is actually the strategy to win the swing voters. Some of them just need to be haters and they win bigly.

[–] [email protected] 114 points 3 days ago (3 children)

That man is politically immortal. There is nothing he can do to "commit political suicide".

[–] [email protected] 12 points 2 days ago (7 children)

He can lose, repeatedly. But that doesn't really end Trumpism. It just mutates the brand into Republicans who can pitch themselves as "winners".

A big problem with Lincoln Project Republicanism is that it doesn't refute the fundamental fascist tenants of Trumpism (the xenophobia, the white nationalist Christiandom, anti-Democratic sentiments). They just pitch Trump as on the wrong side of foreign policy (not hawkish enough on Russia or China).

So we end up with Trump on one end and Ted Cruz on the other, as our range of conservative options.

aka "We've got Trump and Trump Lite, which would you prefer?"

If this is what it takes to sink Trump's ship then I'll fully give up on ever making sense of anything ever again.

Don't get me wrong, that shit show was a national embarrassment, but it wasn't surprising.

Whatever. Vote, folks.

[–] [email protected] 316 points 3 days ago (22 children)

The Madison Square Garden rally, operatic in its repulsive bigotry, will almost certainly alienate more voters who might have voted for Trump.

Will it really? Is there someone out there who didn't know until this event that he was a bigot and an awful person and is now going to change their mind?

[–] [email protected] 149 points 3 days ago (7 children)

You know what's crazy? That answer is almost certainly yes.

I live in a red area and more and more people are starting to see some cracks

[–] [email protected] 100 points 3 days ago (2 children)

As great as that is to hear, I have to wonder under what rock those people have been living up to now.

[–] [email protected] 79 points 3 days ago (5 children)

Honestly, I kind of get it.

I'm very attuned to keeping up with what is happening in the world, at least at a base level. The number of people I've met who just dont do that is staggering. The other day I ran into someone who didn't know what happened on J6. Maybe they were playing dumb, but I didn't think so.

The reason i kinda get it is because this shit is depressing. I would love to be able to just tune out everything political related and only see feeds relating to my hobbies and just be totally ignorant of how fucked everything is. I guess some people saw that opportunity and took it.

[–] [email protected] 41 points 3 days ago

It's fatigue. If there were a turd-based fireworks show outside your house every night, eventually you just have to ignore it.

At first, exploding turds, I kinda want to see that. Eventually everything is covered in shit. That's sort of a problem. A few folks try to clean it up, but it's A LOT of shit. Your house is covered in shit. Your car is covered in shit. You go to the car wash and things improve... But your car is covered in shit again pretty quickly, so that felt like a waste.

Then someone asks you about that one time when a bunch of people broke into a building and let off shit fireworks everywhere. Sure that was new, but the nightly turd extravaganza still went off just the same. Plus the turd fireworks are always being set off in new and unusual places. I can't be expected to remember them all.

Yeah, the "political suicide" bit is immediately questionable. The fact that this race is even close has destroyed any remaining shreds of faith in my fellow Americans.

Trump could go up in stage and rant about black people, using the hard-R; he could repeat the sexist comments he's already famous for; he could probably even criticize Christians - none of it would move the needle. People voting for him aren't doing so because they think he's a great person; they're doing it because they hate liberals.

It wasn't the rape charges, or saying he wants to fuck his daughter, or saying immigrants are eating pets, or that people are getting abortions at 9 months, or trying to build that stupid fucking wall, or banning Muslims, or botching covid, or the insurrection, or calling on proud boys, or having meeting with Putin, or having meetings with Netanyahu, or...

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I will continue to say, and I mean no disrespect to you or anyone else who opposes this shitstain, the fact that he was President once and is very likely to be President again speaks volumes on who the American people are and it's not nice.

A large chunk of you think this man is a good representation of you on the world stage. Someone who is weak, overweight, obnoxious, loud, a bully, sexist, racist, I can go on. This is who a large chunk of Americans feel best represents them.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

People are products of their environment.

A majority of this country did NOT vote for him. He never won the popular vote. He only won because assholes who crafted our systems of power did so to better serve the rich.

We are overweight because of our terrible deregulated food industry filled with garbage and our lack of walkable living spaces in most places Americans live. Hardly any place can be gotten to in the country with out a car.

We are uneducated because the rich have shaped our education system to remove any word about the Pullman Strike… about the original meaning of red-neck… about the bombing of Tulsa… as none of those things serve capital’s interests. So many Americans are angry because members from both major parties (with a few notable exceptions) mostly serve capital, which has allowed people’s material conditions to have worsened to a point that has ripened these same poorly-educated people for demagogues offering them easy scapegoats to shift the blame for their plight.

You can be angry, but to blame Americans for this is as if we have had much say kind of ignores what’s been happening here since at least Reagan’s time, if not longer.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Of course. I have always found it astonishing that anyone can behold DT and think he should be in charge of the country. Of course, same for Limbaugh or all the people in Fox who act like disingenuous assholes nonstop.

..grab 'em by the pussy, or vets are suckers and losers, or his love letters with Kim, or his generals not being loyal like hitler's, or shoving light up the asses of covid victims, or bleach, or TAKING A SHARPIE TO A HURRICANE MAP, or never releasing his financial records, or his fucking health records, or...

I've lost count of how many "political suicides" Trump has allegedly gone through since 2015.... Yet somehow, here he still is...

My faith in humanity has been severely diminished by the fact his candidacy keeps surviving what in a sane world would be disqualifying events/revelations.

Unless people go out an vote, it won't be suicide. They're just pandering to their base. The Dems need to participate and not go on good feels a la 2016.

I think trump could go on stage, strip naked, turn around and shotgun ass blast on the front row crowd and they'd still give their lives to vote for him

The next rally would charge a premium to sit in the "splash zone".

The Daily Beast is essentially Fox News for democrats, and I say this as a democrat. I wouldn’t take much of what they say seriously. Especially their sensationalist headlines.

[–] [email protected] 49 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I mean if 'grab em by the pussy' didn't do it...

Dude commits political suicide for breakfast daily. His voters don't care.

Donald Trump could walk around NYC naked and shrieking the n word and he wouldn't lose a single follower from his base. He's s got a cult of personality around him that is basically indestructible.

Naïve article overall. Writers should know better than to prognosticate on what could actually hurt Trump's chances. But this is a fantastic line:

That was clear early on when Tony Hinchcliffe, a man invited by Trump to give one of the introductory speeches—who in true MAGA fashion alleged without providing a shred of evidence that he was a comedian

One would think stealing and potentially selling sensible documents or a failed coup or the countless sexual allegations are political suicides. But now a racist clown will get him?

Lol, mocking a disabled reporter, bragging about sexual assault, praising Hitler and trying to overturn an election wasn't political suicide, stop trying to predict last straws for his career, there is no bottom.

[–] [email protected] 21 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Oh come on "journalists", please stop with this "end of the Republican party" bullshit.

None of this will kill the white supremacist party because forty percent of America is still identifying as white supremacist and another ten percent literally can't tell the difference between someone quoting Hitler and someone Hitler was a genocidal asshole that shouldn't be looked up to and those morons vote in Pennsylvania.

The Republican party is perfectly fine after this yet another time example of Republicans being Nazi sympathizers holding a major public really where they proudly proclaim their White Nationalist opinions and agenda.

I think the only hope for getting rid of this bullshit strain of conservatism here and across the world is that they hold the same beliefs in the next global pandemic.

It was intentional. They are doing everything possible to bait Harris into a mistake and distract voters from Trump being too frail to campaign. Trump voters are already racist shitbags. The strategy here is to make Harris seem shrill and unreasonable.

I caught the tail end of the story on NPR about how he apologized for one of the jokes and I just assumed it was one of the Nazi Rally jokes and was like "wow the nazi thing is finally getting some traction" but no it was the Puerto Rico thing.

I cannot express how ready I am for this shit to go away.
