I'd say with most of the new Star Wars stuff I think they're trying to show the Empire in a new light, and personally I really like it. We joke about the stormtroopers being wonky and silly, but I like the new direction.

No spoilers, but in Andor and Mando, and a good chunk of the new stuff my opinion has changed. They're actually intimidating, they're who they were supposed to be. These faceless nameless automotons on every corner, watching everything you do, who don't know you or your history but will shoot on the slightest hesitation. I think it's done extremely well finally, showing the true power of the Empire.

The writing in Andor was so good, it makes us empathize with the literal Nazis.

So so good.

spoilerI enjoyed how it showed the actual fall into authoritarianism. The prequels made it seem like this quick overnight thing, when usually it's a slow drip, so slow that most people don't realize it's happening. The slow eroding of rights, troopers slowly showing up where they weren't before, power shifts. Phenomenal job to everyone there.

And fucking terrifying right now too.

My head cannon says that storm troopers actually have great aim. Jedi powers cause them to miss more, like some aura.

My actual canon says that Stormtroopers actual have great aim, as evidenced by Obi Wan Kenobi speaking highly of their marksmanship, and that time they took out a bunch of rebels in that one hallway without any casualties on their side

It kind of got lost over time, but the Stormtroopers in A New Hope were never trying to kill the heroes. Instead, they were herding them around the Death Star so that they could make a daring escape and lead Tarkin and Vader to the hidden Rebel base. They knew the Rebels had a hidden base, they just didn't know where it was. Similarly, in Empire, they're trying to capture the group rather than kill them and are actually quite effective in that regard. It's not until Jedi where they suddenly become incompetent.

Ah, you're referring to the part where one of the rebels looked directly at the audience and said "just so you know, this wasn't a plot hole; I am explicitly acknowledging the fact that they let us escape so that they could track us."

Stupid ambiguous writing

[-] [email protected] 2 points 6 months ago

The Stormtroopers in Jedi were handpicked by a career politician.

[-] [email protected] 17 points 6 months ago

Stormtroopers had good aim early in the Galactic Civil War/Pre-Yavin era as Stormtroopers were in fact the elite Imperial Troops, compared to regular Army units that garrisoned most Imperial worlds.

The degradation in their ability happened as the rebellion became more and more of a threat so the Empire had to repeatedly increase the number of Stormtroopers in service, and facing the higher demands the academies and other training facilities were forced to keep lowering the standards to qualify as a Stormtrooper. In the early days of the Stormtroopers, they were very capable and elite troops. After Yavin, the massive surge in recruits forced the standards to drop further, and by the time of Endor their quality was so bad pretty much anyone who could hold a rifle would qualify.

Well, and now almost no canon video media features imperial infantry other than stormtroopers, purely due to recognition of the design.

They're used as bog standard cannon fodder mooks now, which helps explain all the various "super storm trooper", "dark trooper", "super duper special black ops elite mandalorian trooper" they keep rolling out. Wake me up when they pull a Dragon Ball Super and give us Super Storm Trooper Blue.

Super Storm Super Trooper

[-] [email protected] 14 points 6 months ago

in the first film, they were supposed to be letting them get away

[-] [email protected] 0 points 6 months ago

That was one scene out of a whole trilogy of Stormtroopers having terrible aim.

[-] [email protected] 5 points 6 months ago

I'm never sure how to interact with someone on the internet after they declare that they can't count to two

[-] [email protected] 4 points 6 months ago

Have you found yourself in this situation more than once or, you know, whatever word means more times than once?

[-] [email protected] 4 points 6 months ago

"Lots." The word is "lots."

[-] [email protected] 6 points 6 months ago

When the hell did the bad guys shoot Darth Maul?

[-] [email protected] 32 points 6 months ago

That's not Darth Maul, that's Master Ima-Gun Di (pronounced "I'mma gon' die"). His one and only appearance is on a episode of Clone Wars, and at the end of the episode he and his clones are overwhelmed by enemy droids and he dies.

Yes, his name is just a play on "I'm going to die", because he was created with the explicit purpose of getting killed on screen.

[-] [email protected] 14 points 6 months ago

That’s a bit on the nose, isn’t it?

[-] [email protected] 21 points 6 months ago

The clone wars has a villain named Savage Oppress. The whole show is like that.

[-] [email protected] 6 points 6 months ago

Don't forget his brother, Darth Maul.

[-] [email protected] 5 points 6 months ago

Clone wars was a show for children.

[-] [email protected] 5 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

Upon zooming in, that doesn't appear to be Darth Maul. The saber is also single-bladed and blue. I don't know who exactly it is, though...

[-] [email protected] 5 points 6 months ago

There's electronic stuff under Mando's chest plate. I assumed it's actively drawing fire to the armored areas? This is all head canon.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 6 months ago

There's a good theory that Beskar has some properties that draw bolts to it. Makes sense

Star Wars Memes

Hello there. Somehow, Star Wars memes have returned. It's not a trap, this is where the fun begins.

Technical note: if you're coming from another star system and are getting a "Subscription pending" message when trying to dock, that's just the console being slow to display the right message. The connection is already established. (Probably.)

Our galactic citizens have requested more specific rules, so here are a few.

The general idea is, if you're looking here for rules, you're probably someone who doesn't need to have them spelled out. You're fine. But anyway:

  1. This is a community for Star Wars memes. This means typically screenshots of Star Wars media with some text or context that's meant to be funny and/or thoughtful. All SW media is welcome: movies, games, comic books, fanart... Other kinds of content, like video links or meta memes (about this community, or Lemmy), are fine as well, just keep it on topic.

  2. We are all friends here, and love (sometimes love to hate) Star Wars. Be nice to each other.

  3. As fans of fictional media, we can be passionate. If you very strongly disagree with something or someone, take a deep breath before reacting. Anger leads to the dark side!

  4. Everything in Star Wars has happened a long time ago, in a galaxy far away, and it's a rich universe of millions of words and millions of years of history. So current Earthly matters really shouldn't concern us here. In other words, leave politics, philosophies and convictions behind the door. This applies even if it's about something related to Star Wars.

  5. Original content is preferred. Reposts are fine, just please limit to a maximum of 3 per day, per citizen. It is recommended, but not required, to mark original memes as (OC) and reposts as (repost).

  6. Local mods are the Jedi council. They may take actions that are necessary to maintain peace and stability of the Republic, even beyond the rules outlined here. Follow their guidance.

  7. Regular rules of the Lemmy.world instance apply.
