Yup.

I have a nice projector and sound system. I can take an edible, watch a movie at home, and pause it when I need to pee.

It's beautiful

[–] [email protected] 35 points 8 months ago

Also, subtitles. Also it doesn't cost an extra $40

No shit. Rather pay 20$/m then spend $80per movies to go to the movies. Ticket prices + the obligatory popcorn drinks

[–] [email protected] 7 points 8 months ago (1 children)

The popcorn and drinks are not obligatory. I once snuck a whole KFC combo meal into the theater.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 8 months ago

I smell that fresh popcorn and I'm sold. For me, it basically is obligatory...

Waiting is a small price to pay for a superior experience.

Seriously. The exit lights in theatres light up the movie screen. I’m obviously not saying to turn them off, but my screen at home doesn’t have that issue. It’s a better picture for less money.

[–] [email protected] 21 points 8 months ago

I don't go very often because almost every time I go there is an annoying issue. People being obnoxious is one problem but audio is almost always fucked up and video is half the time too. I can't stand going to the place whose sole business is to play movies and they fuck it up. It's not just one theatre either, I've been to probably a dozen in my area and they are all shit.

I hate watching it with people. Every fuckin movie I always end up with a person using their phone next to me. That's why I wait a while to watch it and go early sat or sun morning.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Well, I would go to the theater if there was anything worth watching. These days, I can't seem to find the excitement I used to have to go to the theater and watch a movie I'm interested in.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 8 months ago (1 children)

That last bit is a S tier depression sign.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

Nahhh I've wanted to watch a new movie several times over the past year while I was out and about with my kiddo. We drove by the theater and I saw the selection

Madame web? Goodburger 2 "we're old now"? Some kind of Winnie the pooh horror movie? Magic Mike 2??? Well, at least I know what "the flash" is. What do you think about that hun? He goes really fast and saves people like 🦸‍♂️ superman??

Yeah let's see what's on at home okay okay yeah idk what these things are either 😅

That happened to me 3x at least

[–] [email protected] 11 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Yeah, because when I go I count at least five blindingly bright phones in use during the fucking film. If I'm going to have a sub-par experience, I'm not overpaying for popcorn and soda, too. I'd rather wait for physical or streaming.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

I also don't like having my hearing destroyed just so the theater can continue to have a dick measuring contest with itself

[–] [email protected] 6 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Oh 100%. If I take my wife to a movie, with the tickets and snacks, we're looking at over $50 in Canada, to go to a movie with someone. Or I can wait a few months and it ends up on streaming or the high seas. There are so many movies to catch up on now that it works out anyways

[–] [email protected] 5 points 8 months ago

A new movie ticket is $19. Chances are, it'll be like 2-3 hours and half of the films today bore me.

I could buy a high quality indie video game for about $15, that I'll play for a week or two.

I only go out to see IMAX movies. Saw Dune pt. II that way.

More comfortable.

Cheaper.

Higher resolution.

No idiots hooting and hollering and shooting up the screen.

Pause.

Subtitles.

Gee, I wonder why.

I'm fortunate in that my city the cinema is never very crowded. I saw Dune 2 opening weekend and it was only one-third full. It's not bad paying and feeling like I have the place to myself.

I already have my tickets for the Ghostbusters and Godzilla movies.

Though, the last really enjoyable theatre experience I had was going to a pre-release showing of "Shang-chi" - a theatre packed full of fans enjoying a fun movie. I miss that type of experience.

I live in central Europe and I usually just go to the movie theater around the corner. They only have one screen so we check the schedule when there is a movie we want to see and plan for it. Or we go when they play an interesting movie, they often have some independent movies that can be quite interesting. Anyway, we pay 6€ per ticket and we usually take some tea in a flask with.

That is a movie experience I enjoy, because we go see movies we want to see (as opposed going to the movie theater and just watch something that's playing), the price is very affordable and I don't feel like I'm treated as a walking wallet.

In the larger cities around we can also have the full commercial experience with popcorn and snacks, 12 different movies to choose from including IMAX, but that kind of experience we don't enjoy (although I used to when younger).

I'll go see a movie in theaters if I think it will actually be good. I went and saw Godzilla Minus One and and it was awesome other than the 2 jackasses sitting next to me cracking jokes. The real problem is I don't expect most of the movies coming out these days to actually be worth going to the theater for. So I wait for them to come out on streaming and watch them while doing other shit on my PC. Sometimes I'm pleasantly surprised, usually I'm not.

My parents try to take me to the drive in every summer and I absolutely hate it. I can't see the screen and there's always some people fucking in the grass and kids playing. I just wanna sit in my house and watch stuff where I can appreciate it fully

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago (3 children)

I'm having trouble picturing why you wouldn't be able to see the screen at a drive-in.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 8 months ago

Honestly the screen isn't super reflective from the weather so the movie ends up being at 50% opacity.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 8 months ago

Because people are walking around constantly and the drive in by me is bad quality so the details of shit aren't clear. Also, people don't turn off their car lights

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

The one I used to live near would start a movie the moment the sun dipped below the horizon, so there was still plenty of ambient light. In my case, it was usually fine because they did double-features and the second movie was often the only one I cared to watch, so I fucked around in the arcade during the first movie.

One-third of U.S. Adults have time to watch movies and watch them in theaters?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 months ago

The only movie I’ve seen in theaters in the past couple of years has been Dune 2. The only movie I plan to see in theaters in the future is Dune 3 if/when it gets made.

Otherwise I’m not sure there’s any movies on anyone’s docket that won’t be far more fun watching from my couch.

When I watched the Simpsons at the cinema, their 45mins of stupid pre movie ads literally spoiled every joke in the movie (except the skateboard ride).

They're not cheap, you can't pause the movie, and it's more expensive than even the current overpriced subscriptions
