Damn, time to actually stop using reddit I guess. I wish I could say Lemmy scratches the itch, but there just aren't any of the communities I care about here. Just seems like there are a bunch of awful memes and copies of my least favorite subreddits.

[–] [email protected] 47 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I had better luck after I started searching for specific communities no matter which instance they were on, and blocking communities and bots.

There's definitely less content than on Reddit but I was able to find replacements for pretty much everything I was following, including niche stuff. And the less content is a plus too, gets me off my phone.

Be the change you want to see. Start a community!

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 year ago (1 children)

This attitude on here is really annoying. Starting a community is a big time commitment if you want it to be moderated and run effectively. A lot of us don't have the time to do that, no matter how much we want the platform to succeed.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago

Do whatever works for you, friend. If you don't have the time or don't want to start/run a community, then you don't have to. Nobody is forcing anyone either way, but if someone wants something to change, then someone will have to do something about it for that to happen.

In this instance, we can engage with the platform through interacting, posting content, and creating and supporting communities. Setting up and running a community is another option that is available to the original commenter, and is one thing that they can do to fill an existing gap that they see. Whether or not they have the time or energy to do that is up to them.

Take care!

Be the change ypu want to be! Create those communities! Add content to those communities! In some time those communities will grow!

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago

Try checking out some other instances. Sh.itjust.works has some good stuff on it. I searched for Lemmy alternatives for reddit and found a few different instances that mostly scratch my itch.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

New platforms struggle with the influx of loser communities who've been banned elsewhere.

Reddit itself is also down right now. Are we sure that’s not the issue?

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I was using RiF through Revanced and it logged me out and trying to log back in threw a User-Agent error. Reddit on web went down about 15 minutes later. It seems an unlikely error to be thrown because the site's going down (and I've never seen it using RiF legitimately).

Same. I guess it's time to pretty much cut out Reddit during the day.

Edit: thinking about it, probably most of the night too since I'm not on the computer all that much once work is over and if I am it's because I'm gaming or working on side projects.

Good night Reddit, it was good whole Huffman didn't fuck it up.

[–] [email protected] 25 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I was doing the same thing. I didn't realize how crappy Reddit had become until I was forced to look at Popular instead of my custom subreddits. Oh well, I was still using RIF to keep up on a couple of subreddits, but honestly, I've been making a lot better use of my free time, so maybe it's good for me for it to be gone for good

I used RIF exclusively - just super simple. Any app out for Kbin/Lemmy that gives a similar experience?

[–] [email protected] 15 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Connect is pretty similar. Slightly different lay out but close enough to get the hang of in a couple of minutes

Sync for lemmy just launched. It is the same as sync for Reddit which was my favorite. Awesome dev

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago

Liftoff has been working pretty well for me.

Same here. I was even using it with my actual account using Revanced. Ah well, good run while it lasted.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 year ago

Pretty bummed about that, but at least Sync seems like a good app.

I've noticed reddit getting worse and worse content since the API changes. I've had to filter like 6 different "rate me" subs that kept appearing on my feed.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Was expecting this a month ago. Guess its finally time to say bye to reddit. RIF was the only app that made reddit worthwhile on mobile. Sad to see it go.

Reddit as a whole is down, so maybe small chance the forbidden thing was a result of that.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago

Maybe they DDOSed themselves again by banning all the apps.

I like the Sync UI for now, but we need a LIF.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Could rebrand as LiFT: Lemmy is Fun Too!

[–] [email protected] 14 points 1 year ago (1 children)

With its egalitarian nature, people could get a LiFE - because Lemmy is For Everyone.

Yep, the Revanced workaround just died for me. I wonder if making a new fake app to access the API with would work again? I'm sure deactivations would continue to happen periodically even then. Redreader is an accessibility app that still has permission and is of course better than the official app, so I'll move to that if I want to use Reddit on mobile now.

Damn I secretly hoped it would just continue like that, I mean on the go I could have lived without being able to sign in, since I had most of my favourite subs bookmarked...

I guess it's over.

I thought it stopped July 1st? I stopped using RiF in mid June. I wanted the breakup to be on my terms lol.

I thought RiF was axed and no longer working following the API changes.

I wouldn't know, I deleted and moved off Reddit entirely since June at this point.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The app still loaded content, but you could not log in to have your subs, vote, or comment.

I just need to visit a couple subreddits. Sadly, there's no alternate communities outside of reddit.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago (2 children)

This may sound like a cliche, but, time to create your own.

Same. Guess the only way I'm redditing now is via old.reddit

[–] [email protected] 19 points 1 year ago

I have a sinking feeling that the days of old.reddit are numbered as well

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago (7 children)

And so say we all. Been a while since the Great Deredditing but is there any other app we can use for Lemmy that is closest to rif? Using Jerboa right now but theres still a lot to be wanted.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago (7 children)

Liftoff is a little better.

I've been enjoying Connect. It's much simpler than the other apps I've tried.

It seems reddit is actually down, as I can't even get it on a pc browser. I'm holding out hope that I can still rif anonymously, otherwise, I agree, it's bye bye morning/daytime reddit.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago (2 children)

It broke for me today too but I downloaded latest revanced manager and applied the oauth patch again and it's working fine now logged in as normal, pretty easy fix really.

Broken for me. Was working last night but has started throwing up the error again now

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Me too. Rip in pieces, Reddit. Good thing I have gotten used to Lemmy and good apps for it have been developed quickly (I use Connect).

I couldn't be bothered to get used to RedReader as it's little bit different from RiF which was one of the best (if not the best) Android apps in regards to UI/UX. I do have the RedReader installed though in case I have to open a reddit url or look up something but I'm not interested in using it for longer periods. So I guess the lurking stops here.

The ship is sinking slowly so getting off of Reddit has been a gradual process.

That sealed the deal for me to use sync for lemmy and migrate over

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Geddit still works, it's an open-source read-only Reddit client that doesn't use the official API and uses RSS feeds I believe. It's really great for following the news and reading some wikis, though scrolling is painful right now.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

Damn it, too soon.🫡
