Russia has summoned the Finnish ambassador in Moscow, after Finland signed a new agreement on military co-operation with the US.

Monday's deal grants the US broad access to the area of Finland's long border with Russia.

Moscow said it would "take necessary measures to counter the aggressive decisions of Finland and its Nato allies".

Finland joined Nato this year in response to Russia's Ukraine invasion.

Russian President Vladimir Putin recently accused Nato of having "dragged" Finland into the bloc, and announced the creation of a new military district near Finland's border.

Russia having tantrums when their neighbors strengthen their defenses

"We regard you being able to defend yourselves as an aggressive act, so we will now threaten you"

Finland has spent the whole time since the Winter War building up defenses. They've got hardened shelters capable of holding the whole population of major cities and their military doctrine is entirely designed around defending itself against Russian forces. If you think Ukraine has been messy for Russian forces to invade, Finland would be an unmitigated disaster for them.

Moscow said it would “take necessary measures to counter the aggressive decisions of Finland and its Nato allies”.

Yeah. What they've already been doing, putting soldiers on the border. They can't do much else.

Russia getting mad about it when Finland beefs up explains why Finland (and most of the rest of Eastern Europe) have been beefing up and applying to join NATO.

Russia doesn't have the ability to conventionally attack Finland in any sustained or meaningful way. Their only deterent is nukes. So I agree it's just Saber rattling, not a credible threat.

They've already lost 300,000+ soldiers in Ukrain, and can't equip the ones they've conscripted.

Can you imagine having to go to those meetings?

You're basically paid to go plop yourself in a chair, while some paid appartchik rattles an absurd lecture at you.

And it's not as if you're ever really off the clock. It's almost certain the Finnish ambassador's Moscow home has been bugged up the wazoo. So they can't walk around their appartment naked or get freaky with that attractive guy or gal who was winking at them at the bar. Hell, if you meet some rando and you bond over your love of pastries, you have to worry that they're not trying to steal your underpants because they want to have your DNA on file or steal your poo particles to see if you have underlying medical conditions they can exploit.

Let me guess, they've "summoned" the ambassador to an important meeting in a 9th floor hotel room with an ample balcony and no awnings.

If they were to defenestrate an ambassador, that would be an escalation of massive proportions. One hopes Putun knows better.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 11 months ago

I think escalating is all Puta has left. No one would attack Russia for killing an ambassador. Everyone would grumble and complain and more sanctions would be threatened (whatever those could possibly be), but no real action would be taken by anyone. He knows that as well as we do.

The ambassador has everything to lose and nothing to gain by going to this meeting in person. The meeting cannot appease Puta in the slightest as it will certainly not result in Finland backing away from NATO membership.

This meeting can only be intended to intimidate or make an example of hthe ambassador. He and his family should have already fled to safety at this point.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Russia has summoned the Finnish ambassador in Moscow, after Finland signed a new agreement on military co-operation with the US.

Monday's deal grants the US broad access to the area of Finland's long border with Russia.

Meanwhile Finland has accused Russia of channelling migrants towards its territory in a "hybrid operation", and has temporarily closed all its border crossings with its eastern neighbour.

The agreement signed on Monday allows the US rapid military access and aid to Finland in the event of conflict, as well as joint training of forces.

Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Moscow would not leave "Nato's military buildup" on its borders unanswered.

But along with Sweden it applied to join Nato over concerns that Russia's aggression in Ukraine could spread to other neighbouring countries.
