Compared against the predominant incumbent social media platforms, the fediverse is very small.

how did you get 1.5 mil for fediverse? From the fediverse observer site that is linked, the second graph “Average All Total Users by Month” approaches 15 mil.

"Average All Total Users by Month" is referring to the cumulative total number of user accounts / signups. The "by Month" part is a little misleading in this context, it's just showing how the total number of users has changed, with a data point for each month.

"Monthly Active Users" aka MAU is a different metric and, in my opinion, is more relevant metric for looking at social media usage. Monthly active users gives a more accurate view of how much a social media platform is being used. According to fediverse.observer, the number of monthly active users, listed as "Average All Active Users by Month", is around 1.73 million.

There are different sources that give different numbers in that similar range, so for the graphic I just put approximately 1.5 million for simplicity.

Do you have any links to who owns these organizations? We could also look into common links such as Board of Directors, which hedge funds are invested in them etc...

Great Graphic btw really shows where a lot of people get their information. Would be interesting to contrast it with corporate propaganda channels such as CNN, FOX, MSNBC etc

It would also be interesting to see how many of those accounts are bots used to spread certain messages and control sentiment

Great idea. As of this time I have not put together any well sourced information about social media ownership.

I did make a post on the subject of Who controls mainstream information? that touches on the spirit of that, but without much information on social media. It is well worth exploring! and anyone can be the one to do it 😉

I don't understand how TikTok has any users at all. It's the worst mobile website I've ever seen. Not only are the controls fucking stupid, the video player doesn't even work 90% of the time.

That's because TT does not want you to use the mobile website, they'd rather you use the app where they have greater data collection methods.

It is designed to be addictive, like slot machines and clicky games.
