I put a ton of time into making Sync for Reddit look and behave exactly the way I liked it, and I don't even know how I'd replicate that when Sync for Lemmy comes out. I can understand why it would be difficult but it would be so awesome

I'd say best practice at the moment would be to make a note/screenshots of your old app settings just in case so you can manually set things up later. You can swipe down on the "Sync for Reddit shutting down" message in the old app to hide it and still get into your old settings. That said, the current test version can restore from an old backup, but it breaks some stuff like preventing comments from loading. From what I saw while recreating my settings everything seemed to be there 1 to 1 so it shouldn't be too bad.

Test version?! Can we commoners help in testing, too?

There were only 100 slots available (maximum google permits for unverified apps), they got taken up real quick through the discord.

Verification by Google usually doesn't take too long though, so hopefully the first public beta will be out soon.

Is the discord public? I tried searching for it but couldn't find it. If so would you be able to post/pm the address?

Of course if it's private then no worries :)

It's public: https://discord.gg/qYWxqva

They change the invite code every week, so better be quick ;-)

for anyone who comes across this comment some day later when it's expired, I think this link should stay updated: https://todo.syncforreddit.com/

also thanks! I've been looking for the link too

Hopefully soon. My understanding is it needs to go through the Google Play review process first, and unreviewed apps can have a limited number of testers.

So this actually works, I imported my S4R backup into S4L and my layout carried over.

After I did this I kept getting 400 errors when trying to read comments to pretty much every thread. Could be something in my backup settings though. Started fresh and no issues.

People have reported it working but @ljdawson has warned against using old backups so make sure you make a fresh backup to import from.

[โ€“] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Good news! It works! You can indeed use old backups, and it (so far) works without issue

This would be awesome.
