What is it with these people like Russia and Florida who think if you ban something it simply won't exist? Gay people have been around ever since there were people. Just because you pass a law doesn't mean they'll vanish.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Such laws make it easier to hurt the target of their hatred. They can actively try to make groups of people not exist.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago (3 children)

But the fact is they've always existed and will always exist. Their hatred is moot, but they're too stupid to realize it.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

They want to kill all of them. And then keep doing so every time new ones come out.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Absolutely. They represent the worst parts of human nature.

It's about destroying those who express themselves in ways that authoritarians feel threatened by, and in doing so intimidating others into falling in line.

florida doesnt have a history of exiling millions of people to gulags...

[–] [email protected] 21 points 1 year ago

And we should loudly continue to compare them to those with those histories due to similarity of behavior until they change their behavior so that they will never have the chance to quietly add a similar history to their own books.

If we don't want a "gulags of Florida" chapter written in history, it's appropriate to call the behavior that would lead to one out

Remind me what happened to the indigenous peoples of Florida?

florida doesnt have a history of exiling millions of people to gulags…

We have our own issues with incarceration. Florida has the 3rd largest prison population in the US, and the US has the highest prisoner population in the world, by a decent margin. While we aren't working and starving people to death, US prisons are quite inhumane relative to other modern countries.

Florida never decriminalized same-sex relationships, it took a federal ruling in 2003 to revoke their sodomy laws. They have yet to repeal them. In my father's lifetime he witnessed a scandalous trial of two young men for sodomy while he was growing up in the area. It needlessly ruined their lives. This was still happening not long ago.

Florida isn't literally running gulags but their behavior isn't anything to be celebrated either.

But it does have a history of "Don't Say Gay"

And there are lots of people who think Russia is Socialist...

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago (3 children)

not that it is, but even if it was, what does socialism have to do with this?

[–] [email protected] 14 points 1 year ago (1 children)

General left of center demonization. This person is lamenting the pattern that will likely continue that consists of things less left than communism (in this case, socialism) being treated as equally "scary" or "nefarious" as communism, in the McCarthy era Red Scare definitions of scary/nefarious (unless I'm misreading, but that seems to be what's happening here)

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

i read it as suggesting that in socialism there would be no discrimination of lgbt people

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

Oh i get what you're pointing out now, yeah, it is kinda weird to just assume all leftists are pro-lgbtqia.

It seems like every combination of person, no matter how seemingly contradictory vibes-wise, exists in some form or another lol

Like it's weird, I am doing the same lumping pattern that I know I shouldn't be in the same breath as acknowledging that it's weird to do that pattern lol cognitive dissonance is weird when you notice it...

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I mean it was prevailing communist theory in Stalin's era that being queer was "bourgeois degeneracy"

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Meanwhile Lenin decriminalized it. Castro did both.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

If by "did both" you mean for 20 years sent queer people to reeducation camps before ultimately decriminalizing it when Mariela Castro was 17, sure.

I'm talking here in general... If you watch the socialist governments, they support the LGBTQ community, whereas the right governments, because they're religious don't support the LGBTQ. So, all the socialist governments like Mexico's, Cuba, Chile, Venezuela, etc are in cahoots with Russia and they say because Russia is Socialist.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I'm pretty sure it's just the brainwashed tankies calling Russia socialist, and even then it's usually more of a "They aren't socialist anymore but they're anti America and therefore good" sort of thing.

I've never seen a government with a communist party refer to Russia as socialist.

Are you the original Potato in my Anus from the Reddit days of yore?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

Nahh... I'm not the one from Reddit

[–] [email protected] 26 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Expect the Freedom Caucus to follow suit in roughly two weeks

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

It doesn't take a crystal ball to know that the Russia Caucus is going to follow Russia's lead.

[–] [email protected] 20 points 1 year ago (1 children)

One can usually tell who the good guys and bad guys are by how they treat their LGBT citizens.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeah mostly because we’re an effective internal target that will always exist and is capable of hiding. Authoritarians notice this and declare us the cause of society’s ills to take heat off themselves.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

Scapegoating minority groups is nothing new for Russia. They've done it to Jews and Kulaks and many more. LGBT groups also tend to be on the left, which far-right groups hate.

I also believe tolerance of same-sex relationships tends to change due to population pressures. Russia needs population after they needlessly sacrificed so many young men in Ukraine. They want to up their fertility rate, so they criminalize and delegitimize those who enjoy non-reproductive sex; so anyone that isn't a Kinsey 6 is coerced to find a partner of the opposite sex.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 1 year ago

Hexbear will almost certainly ignore this.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

Russia should be banned for being extremist.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

Here's another source for this that isn't paywalled like the WSJ is.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

they are wise to do so.. the International LGBT Movement could take down the Putin Regime with very little effort..

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Hasn’t the world already banned Russia as extremist?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

USA looking nervous

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago

the world shook hands with them and will keep shaking

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago

And so where is Putin gonna go?
