I made the choice of hosting some Fediverse software on a domain name I own, however that piece of software (Akkoma, upgraded from Pleroma) has since become unacceptably unstable, and I'd like to switch to something else. I read that if I'm already federating with other servers, I shouldn't switch software on the same domain because that would cause issues, but like, surely those servers will stop trying to reach mine if it's down for a while… There is documentation on how to fully uninstall the instance I'm running, which means deleting users and their posts, after which, could taking the server down for a while work?

It’s not really possible to answer without knowing which specific software you mean. Not sure why that’s a secret.

Oh, ok. It's Akkoma (upgraded/migrated from Pleroma). I just thought that by actually specifying that, I was going to get XY Problem'd by people (how to fix it etc.).

if youre talking about activitypub federation, does it matter what software you use? theres a reason its a standard protocol.

i would hope that any instance of any federating software would just pick up where it left off with regards to activitypub.. cept your server will be throwing a lot of 'content not found'.

now, other pleroma or derivatives might be speaking with your instance over some custom api, and that obviously wouldnt work.. but so?

Lemmy will mark your instance as forgotten in 3 days if I remember correctly
