When internally, you have multiple teams competing, you get the following lmaoo

For real. I was like "Chat? Which of their messaging apps is that?" Messages at least seems like it'll be around for a while, but I don't trust Google with not killing any of their projects...

[–] [email protected] 2 points 11 months ago

Google will kill off one app to force you to move to another... And then they'll kill off that one too.

Isn't Google Chat a feature of Google Messages? It's what they call RCS for some reason.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Nope, different product with almost the exact same name lol.

Here's a bonus for more confusion: in Google Messages if your carrier doesn't self host RCS, that "Chat" toggle changes to a ”Google Jibe" one πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

Edit: clarify app

It tells you at the bottom what backend you're using

Messages is sms, MMS, RCS. I'm not sure what chat uses, but it's a data protocol not tied to the cell network

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

they stopped calling it Chat in Google messages a while ago

Screenshot taken moments ago.

I know it's still dumb, but in that screenshot they are not using Chat anywhere as a proper noun. The option to get to this screen is no longer Chat settings it's RCA settings. Conversations it says RCS message instead of Chat.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

that is chat not Chat (proper noun)

see it's dumb

I thought they got rid of Google chat and made it only for their paid plans or whatever, I remember uninstalling it and switching to signal when they killed it.

Also why is the update to make it look the same it did before

[–] [email protected] 12 points 11 months ago (1 children)

They migrated hangouts to chat and opened chat up to unpaid users

[–] [email protected] 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

All the talk about killing hangouts and they just end up migrating it instead. What is up at Google

[–] [email protected] 6 points 11 months ago

Well, they did kill hangouts. They never said they were going to kill it and also leave their users without an easy migration path. If anything this is better. They reduced redundant apps. Hangouts did somethings better though

…yea and it’s Apple’s fault Chat is a terrible experience.
