Oh I completely misunderstood this one. I thought the joke was that the age difference was borderline problematic so the guy was trying to eek out a few extra hours to make it less bad.

Nope, turns out it's just astrology bullshit.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago

I did too. That would have been way funnier :(

Astrology is fun if you don't take it seriously. Same with tarot. I'm a 100% atheist but I do a tarot reading every night before bed to help with abstract reflection on the day. It means nothing, but it's makes me look at things from a different angle.

If she wants to do a star chart for you then just relax and have fun. It's a way for you two to talk about your lives and a conversation starter. She likes you dude, and if you take the opportunity to lecture about why this is silly then are really doing is sending red flags that you'll talk down to her whenever you might disagree.

Edit: I see a lot of self reporting for thinking others are inferior for enjoying these things. Y'all should rethink your biases perhaps. But I am walking away and ignoring this thread now, I have reached my daily intake of sodium chloride for the day.

While I agree, and also do the occasional tarot reading for fun, some people actually believe they can deduce divine factual information about you from your date and time of birth. To me that's a bit of a yellow flag that they might have other dangerous anti-science beliefs.

[–] [email protected] 23 points 1 year ago (2 children)

That's not a yellow flag, that a flashing red flag. It tells you that they will probably believe all the quasi scientific-sounding fads that come up, and also that they are not good at critical thinking.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Yeah, i didn't explain myself very well. What I meant was being into astrology is a yellow flag, so you have to find out if they enjoy it a bit as a hobby, which is fine, or if they're "true believer" into it, which is not fine.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Fair enough, I suppose.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

You are making a ton of assumptions based on stereotype. Not all people with tarot decks and star charts are anti Vax flat earthers. Just like not all Christians are pro life bigots. You are painting with a extraordinarly broad brush.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago (4 children)

If you truly believe that your date and time of birth has any relation to your personality traits, them the only thing I am assuming is that you are a moron. I didn't say anything about anti-vax or flat-earthers, though they are also morons.

Found the vegan

I mean, I can. And get a baseline expectation on some others.

Of course, the thing I can deduce is your age, and the baseline expectations would be those associated with the generation you belong to. So, less astrology and more basic math.

[–] [email protected] 25 points 1 year ago

I mean, by your own reasoning though it's at least a yellow flag - if she's just doing it because she thought it might be fun and cute, then yeah knock yourself out - if she looks at you seriously and says shit like "I need to make your star chart so I know if we're compatible and whether or not we have a future together", then I'd personally nope out of there

[–] [email protected] 17 points 1 year ago (1 children)

If someone starts doing my star chart, that's a blood red flag that we are going to disagree all the goddammit time and it just isn't worth it.

Astrology is fun if you don’t take it seriously.

I agree, but the problem is that a lot of people do take it seriously. It's perfectly fine to enjoy these things if you just think they're fun. But actually believing in things that are demonstrably wrong is definitely a huge red flag for me. I've also become extremely negative towards astrology in particular because I've had to deal with family who used to take it at face value and also because I love astronomy, which, to me, gets tainted by this pseudoscience nonsense that sort of imitates it.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Astrology, tarot, etc are essentially just guided meditation. An option to think about yourself deeply for a while, and possibly more accessible and doable for certain types of people. The problems only arise when fraudsters use it for fraud.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

100%.

Anyone who wants money for these "services" is absolutely an asshole. But I think the same for anyone who charges for "prayers" or "divine healing".

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Or you could just talk about your lives like normal people do.

Astrology and any other religion/spirituality stuff itself is a flapping red flag.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago

Your approach is so refreshing. My partner is huge into tarot and believes that it allows him to receive guidance from his late husband. I figure it doesn't harm anything for him to feel that his husband is still close, plus it gives him time to reflect on recent events.

I need Peter to explain the joke

[–] [email protected] 131 points 1 year ago (4 children)

In astrology, a bunch of trivia about your life factor into your reading... So like basic newspaper horoscopes are just like "which range of dates does your birthday fall into? Oh okay you're a Pisces then, so go read the horoscope for all Pisces..." But if you go to a "real" astrologer for a "real" reading, they wanna know other stuff, including what time you were born, and that'll help personalize the reading.

Mom is making the assumption that the reason for the question is to use her response as input to an astrology reading. Instead of sharing the time of birth, she warns the subject to stay away from "her," the astrologer, who are stereotypically female.

[–] [email protected] 165 points 1 year ago

My guess is it’s supposed to imply a potential girlfriend with an interest in astrology more than a professional reader.

[–] [email protected] 25 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Thanks Peter I appreciate it

[–] [email protected] 33 points 1 year ago

It's not the mom assuming the son is going to a professional astrologer, it's the mom assuming the son is attracted to a girl who asked him this question and believes astrology.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Thanks for explanation. In my region astrologers are stereotypical male

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Really? 👀 Where's that?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

is it tho? when I was younger, girls would ask this, so they would surprise you with a gift exactly on your birthday and birthtime, I always thought it was a cute surprise.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Lol that's cute! Probably not what mom was thinking of though-- Hard to object to that.

[–] [email protected] 51 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Short answer: The joke is that astrology girls are crazy.

Context: If you look up your sign according to your date of birth (sun sign) and find that it doesn't fit your personality at all, well you just need to delve deeper, find out your rising sign and moon sign by having a professional (or algorithm) cross reference your time of birth with the fancy astrology chart. Still doesn't fit you? Well you probably just got the time wrong because it has to be to the exact minute. Perhaps it's that your mom doesn't remember correctly, or that many hospitals will fudge the times a little in your birth records. You must work extensively with a professional astrologer, who will assign your sign based on whichever one sounds the most like you. You need the 3 signs for your reading to really "work"

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I can only speak from personal experience, but 100% (as in all 1) of girls I've dated who were really into astrology were also 'crazy' in the genuinely-heard-voices sense. (She called herself that sometimes)

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Astrology is much easier than addressing and treating bipolar and/or schizoeffective disorders.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 year ago

It's astrology stuff lol

Putting aside the woo of astrology and the like, which can be harmless fun, I've learned to be a little wary of the die-hards - it's not a long walk from all Sagittarius are _____ to all black people are _____.

It seems to encourage essentialist thinking that I've seen creep up on people.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Anybody that has a strongly held belief in superstition is off the "hang out daily forever" list. Be that a traditional superstition with meetings on Sundays or some equally incorrect combination of fate and astronomy.

But here's the thing, she'll fuck you til you're numb if the signs match or whatever.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 year ago

This is honestly hilarious.

Meanwhile, dating apps: Let's add star signs as a profile setting!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Yeah but they let you filter people out based on the fact that they answered the question.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

All the ones that were into that shit were fucking boring and awful to me.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yea, the last girl I was dating was into all of that stuff. I think she thought that because she was into all of that stuff it meant she was automatically kind, open and blah, blah which meant that she didn't realise when she was being judgemental or mean because it didn't fit her image of herself.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Oof. I think thats it, self image distracts from the sum of her actions.

In the middle of watching the second season of Carnival Row here. So I thought it was because secretive evil cheating mom knows they're related, in a Pornhub kind of way, and was trying to get the jump on shutting it all down between them before they made babies with sloped foreheads and braided family trees.

And it turned out to be nothing more dark than an interest in astrology. I should probably rethink my streaming consumption choices, lol.
