I'm moving to try a different instance and want to export my blocks from my previous instance because i hate meme communities. the export settings option only exported my subscribed communities

Doesn't seem to make sense, shouldn't the file size be the only problem?

Keyboard Navigation (lemmy.world)
submitted 3 weeks ago by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

Is there any official support for keyboard navigation, or failing that a recommended plugin/script? I'm just after some basic functionality to key through my feed, open posts, reply to them, jump through comments, etc.

Hey all,

My personal home-hosted server ran out of disk space and so went offline while I was away and I didn't notice it for a week or two.

This meant that federation requests (or subscriptions requests) went offline and now most of the servers I'm federated with are lagging. I'm only getting updates from a couple.

Is there a way to trigger federated servers back to life so I get the subscription updates? Federation does seem to be working, given some servers seem to federate fine and this post was via federation and has worked.

My lemmy account is on the programming.dev instance but I use newsboat for RSS reading of some lemmy.ml communities, along with browsing the local homepage of lemmy.ml and some other instances in a regular browser. Is there a way to do either of these things from the programming.dev instance so that I can easily comment on posts without having to manually locate the same post by browsing to /c/[email protected] on my own instance?

Here's the post in question: https://midwest.social/post/10123989

Which linked to my blog here: https://wumpus-cave.net/post/2024/03/2024-03-20-moores-law-is-dead/index.html

On my instance (midwest.social), this works fine. However, some other users were reporting a broken link, and I also see a broken link when using my mobile app (Summit). When it breaks, I see these calls in the server logs:

  • GET /api/v3/post?id=2024
  • GET /api/v3/comment/list?max_depth=6&post_id=2024&sort=Top&type_=All

Which appear to be Lemmy API calls with some of the actual link data built in.

I saw a community from feddit.de on lemmyverse.net which I wanted to explore but I got a server error opening the community. I thought it might be abandoned or deleted but feddit.de seems completely unreachable atm.

I also checked with multiple devices in case I would have been banned for some reason.

Does anyone know why that is the case? Have a good one.

Feel free to lmk if I need to ask this somewhere else.

When I search for communities about animation on the web interface, I see one called [email protected]

There has been no activity in the /c for 6 months.

It's not my native instance, but I can read posts and comments in the /c, and I can even create a post in the /c.

But when I try to visit http://lemmy.film in a browser, I get a "Web Server Is Down" page.

Is the content in [email protected] a ghost of cached content on my native instance?

Hello, I noticed some of my early posts (less than a year ago) disappeared. I did not receive notification about the removal. Hence I suppose it could be due to one of those:

  • the instance hosting the community got defederated
  • the community I posted in was removed
  • there is some automatic cleanup job of old posts on Lemmy.ml

This is not mentioned in Lemmy.ml's presentation section. Does this instance implement pruning? (if so; what is the retention duration?) Is it possible to check the retention policy of a Lemmy instance?

Hello. Wondering if discussion around forced sterilization that has nothing to do with genetics will get me banned.

For example: if a pedophile rapes and impregnates a child they could be a candidate for forced sterilization.

Has nothing to do with eugenics. Completely void of using genetics to identify a person.

Thanks!

Hi all, a few weeks ago I started noticing a change to the active and hot sorting methods. They show stale topics and I miss the boat on conversations. Seems like something changed and just curious if it’s just me or if others are seeing this too?

I just saw in the admin Mastodon account that you need to clear your cookies, and that's it, which actually worked for me. I'm not sure why.

I'm on the edge of hosting my own lemmy instance but I have a problem of the theoretically infinitely ballooning space requirements.

Are there any options for not saving all the federated images locally? I'd settle for a jank solution such as wiping it via cron or similar.

Thank you

No idea if this is possible but i would like to make it so that i receive posts in as many languages as possible but have them automatically translated in the jerboa app.

Could i write a script (or is one already available) that would do this for me locally? Would it be easier to self host an instance that does this instead? How would i go about that etc etc.

Sorry if this isn't really the place for this sort of question but i wasn't sure what community would be more appropriate.

Hi! Thank you for Lemmy! So, when I load the page with Chrome, I'm always shown as logged out. I have to refresh the page, and then suddenly I'm logged in. I found that this bug exists only on Chrome, on all OSes (Linux, Windows, and Mac), and it exists both on lemmy.ml, and on lemmy.world.

But that's not the weird part.

The weird part is that when I reload the page, half of the times, the username becomes something like "killingcore" or something like that (it doesn't stay On for very long, so I can't read it well) before it changes to "Eugenia". I don't understand what that username is. Is it some kind of security problem? Or some cache, part of the normal code? It's really weird.

I noticed that that weird username happens only on lemmy.ml, not on .world.

Edit: I reloaded the page a bunch of times to retest, and what I'm reading is something killthrillrope or something like that. And it changes back to Eugenia almost instantaneously. It happens now once every 4-5 reloads of the page.

Edit 2: A few hours later, and it now loads this user for half a second before it loads mine: https://lemmy.ml/u/cypherpunks Not only that, but it loads his dark theme for that half second (my default is light theme).

Hello, here we are again =) Environment:

  1. I've brought up mastodon and lemmy with docker on host B (let's call it BackEnd)
  2. I created 2 nginx virtalhosts: one called mastodon.cyberveins.eu and the other orion.cyberveins.eu.
  3. Both of them are behind cloudflare argo tunnel.
  4. Both of them can federate with other servers (as you see I can write here on orion and you are receiving my messages)
  5. You can find my username with mastodon looking for [email protected]

BUT If you try a cross-find,

  1. you can find me on mastodon.cyberveins.eu FROM my orion.cyberveins.eu
  2. you CANNOT find me on orion.cyberveins.eu FROM mastodon.cyberveins.eu
  3. if you look for @[email protected] from ANOTHER mastodon you will end up finding... @[email protected] BUT instead of my orion's profiles, it shows up RANDOM!!!! (literally see screenshots!)

... I'm requesting help to understand what is going on -.-

@[email protected] (I mention you since you are the image maintainer...)

Summary

Using docker images > 0.19.1 leads to crash of the lemmy-1 process (exit code 0 and then 139) on ARM64 (not tested on X86_64)

Steps to Reproduce Take a WORKING docker-compose file such as:

This makes me far more reluctant to engage in general.

Ethically, I think there should at least be an option to filter these messages from the personal profile feed. Everyone should have a right to forget about encounters with negative people or take action to protect their own mental health above any beyond any platform functionality. If a person is encountering hate, abuse, or for any arbitrary reason, they should not be confronted with any form of reminder when they choose to remove the reference.

(Currently on .world @ version 19.3)

Also, the comments counter for a post and blocked users do not jive.

I have been an active user of different Lemmy.ml communities for a long time but for personal reasons I want to migrate from Dbzer0 to Yiffit, unfortunately to my surprise Lemmy.ml stopped federating with Yiffit a few months ago and honestly it saddens me because there are communities like c/linux, c/privacy, c/firefox, c/fdroid that are extremely useful and I love to participate in them.

Is there any chance that Yiffit will be federated again? And why was it defederated from Lemmy.ml?

The admin of Yiffit is an incredibly nice person and I'm sure he will want to come to collaborate to be able to federate again with Lemmy.ml. As a user I find it a little unfair not to be able to participate in these communities from this instance but I understand and respect that each instance has its own policies and decisions.
