What if you sign your name to one?
Doesn't count! For contracts to be enforceable, all parties involved need "consideration". A promise is a contract in which one party does not receive consideration, and so it's unenforceable. If you sign your name AND receive a dollar, then it's no longer a promise and now a legally enforceable and binding contract.
