A giant douche or a turd sandwich, who will you choose?
edit: it's a south park reference people, chill. It's just recognizing that both candidates are shitty. Obviously in this case one is far worse than the other, and it doesn't mean you shouldn't vote... fucking vote
I always hated that episode. A giant douche is functional and useful. A turd sandwich will literally make you sick.
I think you're overthinking it. I just think it's funny how relevant it always seems to be every election
But that's my point, it's not relevant. It's a bOtH SiDeS sAmE enlightened centrist platitude that's just meant to ride the fence to avoid pissing anyone off. "Haha, both the candidates suck, I don't want to vote for either." That's neither insightful nor entertaining. There are real differences between the candidates, the parties, and the various sides of an issue, and pretending it doesn't matter is part of why the world is a fucking mess.
Honestly, for me it's just a reflection of the fact that there are always going to be 2 shitty candidates. It's not some centrist manifesto, obviously Biden is still the clear choice compared to a fucking fascist psychopath.
As someone who is neither centrist nor enamored of either party, it isn't ever "both sides are the same." It's "these two groups actively work together to prevent others from sharing the platform' and 'of all of the possible candidates, these are their best?'
Biden is better than Trump, point blank. Regardless, if Biden is polling poorly, then the Democrats should set aside their pride and pick a candidate that appeals to independents and proper progressives. The Democratic base will vote for whoever the DNC fields, so the real challenge is convincing those swing voters.
Attempting to shame people into voting for a problematic candidate is what got us Trump in the first place. Perhaps its time to listen to those seeking actual change.
Or at the very least, fix their fucking messaging.
Are you suggesting that there is no difference between a turd sandwich and a giant douche?
I'm suggesting that people who quote that line do so in order to imply that there isn't a difference. The whole episode is about how Stan doesn't care for either candidate, and resents being forced to choose.
And yet he still does choose
But does his choice matter? Is the end result functionally different?
You say that like it matters what a Democrat's position is. It doesn't. Not even when they have a supermajority in Congress and control the Supreme Court. They will not get things done.
Status quo is far from ideal, but it's still better than actively trying to make things worse.
The status quo is gradual decline. It'll be better for a while but eventually we'll still be screwed.
I can fix my car if it's got an oil leak. I can't fix my car if I push it into a burn pit.
I'd say that greatly depends on where the leak is coming from. You might need a whole new engine.
And, of course, you aren't the one fixing it. It's you and 300 million other people, some of whom want to burn the car to the ground, others who will put antifreeze in the oil filler cap, and still others who will torque the bolts until they snap off.
Don't get me wrong; a gradual decline means I have a pretty decent life. My kids won't be so lucky, but we've been on this course since a bunch of guys threw tea in the harbor and there's nothing I can do to change it.
Nope we're all trying to fix our own cars, but some people like you have decided to never change your oil because somebody else decided to drive on bald tires with bad ball joints.
The real unfortunate part is we've all been given American brand cars so all of our cars suck.
We agree on that. American government was shitty when it started and got shittier over time. They just bolted a V8 and a plastic body kit to a 18th century carriage and called it a day.
Which will never change without participating
Nah, she needs a complete teardown and rebuild. Of course, the tools we have for that mean we'll probably end up with something worse.
Then we need new tools which we won't get without participating
Participating in this sham of a government? No.
Participating in other types of action? Probably.
Just like the founding fathers
Except without the racism and sexism
I'll take that eventually over right now though
It's the difference between hitting the ground at 500 knots and hitting the ground at 200 knots. We'll still be dead at the end but we'll be alive and in terror a bit longer.
Why even breathe if we're going to die?
Because if I stop breathing I pass out and keep breathing. Just like elections keep happening whether I want them or not.
Ok but electing Trump (probably) won't actually kill you, it'll just make your life even worse for even longer. There's no bedrock at the bottom of the hole, there's no breaking point where the US suddenly collapses into complete anarchy, your options just steadily get worse. Accelerationism does not work.
Don't get me wrong: I don't want Trump elected. I just don't expect to see anything but decline for the rest of my life and I'm resigned to it.
I think if these young voters would get on board with that they wouldn't have a problem voting for it.
Sometimes I feel that way too, but I refuse to believe it can't change. We were great once, we can do it again.
...shit I reinvented MAGA. You know what I mean though, great but not like that lol
The more I learn about US history the less I believe we were once "great." Powerful? Sure. But not "great."
Fair enough. For the first time, then.
