Yes, I was spending $30 a month on coins. Giving hugs and such is a nice gesture and what surprised me is how many messages ( I always do it anon ) I would get thanking me telling me how being seen and heard helped them a lot when they were in a really bad place. That feedback gave me more incentive to continue with kind acts on reddit
I like this, there are some good things you can do with the coins for sure. And spreading kindness is a noble endeavour! Especially on a platform that can be so toxic. ๐๐ you are very cool Seagoon!
I know I was a recipient of one of you hug awards awhile ago on Reddit.
Let me say that it was really appreciated what you did.
Thank you Seagoon.
Virtual text hugs are also good too!
I can guarantee that one of your big awards made me feel a lot better. It was very kind! Thank you โค๏ธ
If you pay for a reddit premium subscription, you get a number of benefits. The main ones are highlighting new comments since you last viewed a post, and removing at least some ads. It also gives you a monthly allowance of "reddit coins" that you can use to award posts/comments. The bigger awards (e.g. gold) grant the recipient a week of reddit premium features and some coins they can spend themselves.
Most people probably aren't paying for the "reddit coins" per se, they're paying for the other features. Then they spend the coins to award comments and posts that they particularly like.
The fact that "coins" cost money and are limited means people tend to think more about what they spend them on, so the awards are a lot more indicative of what people consider to be valuable content than free up/down votes.
They aren't getting rid of the paid reddit premium subscriptions, they're just getting rid of the current system of "coins" and awards. They say they plan to replace it with something, but there's no indication of what the replacement might be.
coins are not limited , you can buy as many as you want
OK, "limited until you pay more or receive another gold award" to be precise.
I got given coins once from an award, probably still got 'em. Some people used google play points or something to buy them too. But yes, some people would've spent actual money.
well, use the coins to give someone a hug ๐
Sound advice as always, Seagoon!
Sadly yes, some even pay for premium and spend it on items for their avatar. Now, I remember Gaia:Online and I miss it, but no way should anyone be paying real money for cosmetics, for an avatar on a news aggregator ugh
I am allowed to judge, because I spent $2K over 3 years on League of Legends skins, from 2014-2017
I spend zero on computer games n/k
I haven't spent money on a video game in ages, and at the time I did that with LoL I had a full time job. No way I would ever do something like that again haha
