Winged Escape

This is a male, red-bellied woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) departing a bird feeder with a peanut.

"Red-bellied Woodpeckers are pale, medium-sized woodpeckers common in forests of the East. Their strikingly barred backs and gleaming red caps make them an unforgettable sight – just resist the temptation to call them Red-headed Woodpeckers, a somewhat rarer species that's mostly black on the back with big white wing patches. Learn the Red-bellied's rolling call and you’ll notice these birds everywhere." - allaboutbirds.org

I don't post all of the photos that I post here to my Pixels gallery, but I post the photos I like best. Some don't make the cut. I usually wait a couple of days and see how I feel about it then.

Thanks! They'll be back, I'm sure. The red-bellies are regular visitors to my backyard, but they go for the seeds particularly peanuts. They don't normally hit the suet feeder.
