Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:

The climate problem caused by relentless pursuit of quarterly profit is starting to affect our quarterly profits!!!! When it was just the majority of the human species at stake it was just fun and games, but now it's starting to disrupt %1er pocketbooks in no meaningful way so now I care.

HuR dUr DeRp you're the global 1%!

Just needed to pointlessly point that out when people mention the problems in our society!

It doesn't serve any purpose other than deflecting, but HuR dUr DeRp it's a point I can make to look smart!

This response is really interesting to me. Can you really see no other thing that could have motivated my comment than to anonymously look smart? Do you really believe that assigning blame to those most responsible for causing the problem is a deflection? Who am I protecting by "scapegoating" the relentless pursuit of short term profits by investors for driving the climate crisis as well as driving the main opposition to policy which may allow us to avoid the mass death and suffering that industry is leading us toward?

No, sorry! That's not at all what I intended. It was to cut off the jerks that love to make that comment when they see people refer to the 1%. It's always "yeah buddy you're the global 1% too so..."

Sorry if it seemed like it was directed at you specifically!

Bad reddit habit. I would leave comments that reference what I'm replying to, but really meant for those that come read the thread after.

No problem. I've done the same many times.
