as it states in the header, I am trying to use the Ubuntu OS on a windows computer that I am not by currently. I am hoping the Operating System can work on a Windows to perform functions of ip address retrieval that powershell is not registering or succeeding in writing to SD cards meant to power mango or raspberry pi

Im using ubuntu 24, when i start my machine it doesnt recognize my bluetooth dongle on the peripherals.

Everytime i have to remove the dongle, plug back in so it recognizes, also after i do that i cant connect my bluetooth headphones straight on i have to connect it, disconnect, turn off the headphones, turn back on and then connect again.

On the first connection it only shows that the bluetooth is "connected" but the audio keep coming from my speakers, it only starts to work when i connect again.

i already tried every solution chatgpt throwed at me, none worked.

its driving me crazy because it seems only i have this issue on the internet.

I’ve installed Ubuntu 24.04 on my HP ProDesk 400 G3 mini. Initially, I installed it on a 2.5” SATA drive, and the storage size displayed correctly in system info. But after switching to an NVMe drive, the storage size now shows as “Unknown.” I’ve tried two different NVMe drives, and both have the same issue where the size isn’t recognized.

Has anyone else faced this? Any ideas on what could be causing this? Thanks!

Since upgrading to 24.10 my login screen is blinking on and off, though mostly off for long periods of time, and when it's on it's barely ever as long as a second.

Sometimes I get a message on my black screen saying out of range.

I can still login by typing my password as thankfully focus defaults to the password input box, and once I get to the desktop things are fine.

I checked the logs but can't see anything that stands out as being the cause and no mention of sddm.

Any ideas how to fix this?

I know the iso is still in the works and sound, brightness etc don't work yet but has anyone already tested what the battery life is? I had a Nvidia laptop which had worse battery life on Ubuntu than on windows so I was wondering what it is on the Snapdragon laptops.

Hi-

I have a subnet (A) with several Ubuntu servers running SSH service.

I'd like to be able to permit SSH access to these servers *only* from another subnet (B), which is separated from subnet A by a firewall.

The firewall will drop any SSH traffic other than from subnet B, however the Ubuntu servers on subnet A will still be able to communicate directly with each other without traversing the firewall.

I want to be able to block these Ubuntu subnet A servers from being able to SSH to each other.

I know that some advanced switches are able to do this, but I believe the switch these servers connect to is not even managed, so don't think this will be an option.

Is it possible to block SSH traffic within the subnet using the Ubuntu servers themselves? eg iptables, or nftables or something else?

Has anyone else had trouble installing the most recent version of Ubuntu? I have an old Pc from my great aunt, I was planning on setting it up as a home server because it has a massive hard-drive for some reason. I made a bootable drive, and first time around it started fine. But in the setup process I got an problem that I could report, something about the “subiquity bootlogger” this same problem happened every subsequent try,so everyone I remade the bootable drive, and redownloaded the ISO. (keep in mind this is my first time with and form of Linux so if this was a bad idea lmk) Anyway I ended up finding an older version of Ubuntu, specifically version 20.04.3 (it was the version the YouTuber was using) so far the installation seems to be working fine.

Edit: the install was absolutely perfect, nothing went wrong. Should I try to update to a newer version?

So I was working on python and ros, and accidentally I ran sh sudo apt remove em* This accidental '*' wildcard did the trouble. Although I stopped the terminal within 2 seconds but It looks like I have already lost the side panel bar.

How do I know which packages were uninstalled and what would be the best way to install them back? (Or fix the panel dock bar)

Hey there,

I have an Ubuntu Server that hosts a website. It is designed by a freelancer and now I want to change the security measures so that only I can access the servers.

What are the things that I should change?

I'm really noob at this and don't have any experience with Ubuntu before. So, I'd appreciate if you can guide me step by step.

Is it possible to record hdr with a capturecard through obs in Ubuntu? When recording with Blackmagic Decklink 8k pro g2 the hdmi output shows the image on external display but the image on obs is black if and only if the input hdmi is hdr. Also if I move the captured footage to windows its black there too. Is it possible to capture hdr? I know Ubuntu doesnt support hdr displays, but I wasnt sure about capturing.

Disclaimer: This is my opinion. Yes, I understand we can make any GNU/Linux system as we like it to be. It is not catered towards experienced or config/terminal friendly users. It is in support of users coming from closed source OS wanting a full fledged Free desktop experience without the mental overhead of maintaining your desktop. This list does not include Lightweight derivatives or specialized distributions. Only Full Desktops who can go toe to toe with Windows and Mac OS in terms of Software Integration and Community Support are included.

https://i.postimg.cc/2SY5K5zz/IMG-20241113-134019.png

Linux Mint - Beginner friendly, old Windows feel, System backup integrated by default. (Is now the most recommended distro instead of Ubuntu)

Zorin OS - Beginner friendly, WINE integrated by default, Looks polished. (Pro is worth paying to help devs out, otherwise Core is fine as free)

Elementary OS - Polished Distro, Mac OS feel. (Although it hasn't been updated in a while, I can only see one dev working on it)

Kubuntu - KDE fans, full fledged QT and maximal experience. (Idk why but I feel like scientists might like this.)

Pop! OS - Unique, Gamer Friendly, Highly Integrated. (Cosmic may or may not bring the year of linux desktop)

My personal choice out of these in current time is Zorin OS, because it is very well rounded and will run on most hardware and with windows software support out of the box. (Otherwise a debodhi linux user)

After I installed Chinese fonts and set the language to Chinese, only part of the content in the desktop environment is in Chinese, and most of the content is still in English.

For example, in the right-click menu, only the "Open Terminal Here" option is in Chinese, and the other options are in English. The start menu in the status bar is displayed in Chinese, but the application is displayed in English.

Is there any dependency missing?

Hello all,

I really appreciate any advice people here can give me. When I close and then open my laptop, I can see the log-in screen for Ubuntu. However, the screen goes black and gives me the following error:

[5763.700208] Bluetooth: hc10: command 0x0c01 tx timeout

[5763.700272] Bluetooth: hc10: Opcode 0x0c01 failed -110

[5765.828193] Bluetooth: hc10: Opcode 0x0c1a failed -110

[5766.251739] Bluetooth: hc10: Opcode 0x0c1a failed -16

Thanks in advance for any help. I have a background in technical support, but really only in Windows and Mac OS X. I wanted to learn some Linux basics for fun, but I am honestly completely perplexed.

Edit: I tried disabling Bluetooth in settings and that does seem to allow the computer to wake from sleep.

I am using an Nvidia GPU on this machine, but I doubt it's related. I also don't use that GPU for anything intensive in Ubuntu, only in Windows.

Hey everyone! I use ubuntu through WSL for my Computer Science class. I tried opening ubuntu today and got an error that took me forever to figure out. I eventually figured it out, but in the process, deleted my ubuntu which also deleted all my classwork. Thankfully, the important stuff was backed up to github, but now I'm missing a lot of classwork. Is there any way I can recover that work, or is it gone for good? Thanks!

Was on Ubuntu Desktop pretty exclusively from 22.04 through 24.04. 24.10 has presented some rather annoying bugs. I've found solutions to a few. I'll present them here as some may be difficult to search for if the user doesn't know what they are looking for.

* Keyboard inputs get stuck for a few seconds in games and graphical apps. sometimes crashing the game

IBUS issue, solved by adding XMODIFIERS=@im=none to /etc/environment

* Audio starts 1 to 3 seconds after loading a video (browser/youtube or VLC affected for me)

Solved by following pipewire wiki troubleshooting step 5.1.13

* Audio crackles under even moderate IO and/or CPU load.

Partially solved.. I say partially because I've only been able to moderate the issue a bit by increasing the buffer sizes as suggested. But the system still crackles when say installing a steam game in the background. I'm on a 7950x3d with ZFS on samsung 990pros. Its not struggling. Is this a process priority issue?

* Gnome power settings (display blanking specifically) being ignored.

Not solved. Gnome is stuck on timing out the display 1m after inactivity. Nothing I set it to changes.. Went through the gamut of gsettings in the CLI as well to disable the power settings to no avail. I have another older 2950x Threadripper that is not experiencing this and there are no differences I can discern at the moment.

* SNAP package issues. (warning rant)

I get SNAP packages aren't Ubuntu issues.. But at the same time, THEY ARE.. They keep migrating more apps to SNAP. And those SNAP packages bring new innovated ways to cause issues and headaches.. (DEB packages largely work). Again I realize this is a complex interconnected community.. I've had problem with Signal message app SNAP package that deleted my database causing a loss of all historical messaging. Issue the snap community finally solved.. Problems with Steam SNAP package not being able to use external USB connected or foreign formatted "NTFS" drives. Problem with Brave browser SNAP package, loses state everytime you restart it. I have solved this by switching to the DEB packages for Steam and Brave. Call me old school but I absolutely hate this push to containerize everything. Its like they are trying to get me to turn on the Dedup ZFS feature. Is it so hard to statically link libraries than to containerize your program? Maybe I've been away from programming to long.

Anyhow, I've ranted long enough. Hope the solutions help. I'm going back to managing these old RHEL7 servers because for the life of me, app developers can't be bothered test their app on anything newer..

Is it just me? Starting from Ubuntu 24.04 whenever I use Nvidia + XOrg most of the Gnome apps take around 30 seconds to launch, the theming is broken, dark mode doesn't work, and Steam client lagging a lot. But when I switch to Wayland all those issues are gone, but I get a terrible input lag in return. I see similar bug reports related to these issues since the release of Ubuntu 24.04. I feel like Ubuntu and Gnome don't want to spend time on XOrg issues, they just ignore these issues. And well, I don't want to talk about Wayland, otherwise I will be downvoted to the hell. I am Ubuntu user for more than 14 years, and this is the first time I really want to switch to something else. Does anyone having similar issues? My Nvidia driver is 560 btw, and I else tried 550 and 555, I get the same results. Edit 1: I don't want to trash Ubuntu, Gnome or Wayland. It's just very annoying that Ubuntu is not "stable" distro anymore for me.
