I recall there was alot of hype around new technologies like optical computing, quantum computers that'd revolutionize computers. We also regularly discussed news on full dive VR and immortality.

But it seems like there's nothing going for those recently. Has optical computing gone the way of quantum computers, perpetually 15 years away? Also, I don't have much hope for FDVR and immortality. The VR industry is in a dire state, with no decent products, we're far, far off from anything remotely full dive. And I haven't heard any news about immortality tech either. Its just yet another pill/therapy that shows promise in mice but winds up like LK-99.

It'll be the next smartphone, not the wheel. Reasions:

  • Heavily domain restricted. Everyone seems to think it's easy to program every little thing a white collar worker does as he moves data around a physical office. Yes if every company had a 100% digital movement campaign it would. We do not live in that world even for big companies
  • Assistive only. No one trusts AI including AGI for law, financial, health etc. It will be like a stronger computer but that's it
  • No singularity event. AI that self improves will hit an improvement cap and that's the end of it. It doesn't make sense for intelligence to have infinite scale. Once you get to a certain level you are "smart enough" to handle most tasks. You don't warp into a fantasy world of limitless possibilities

I don't mean free as in a public library. I mean free as in air tv or radio, I don't understand why this isnt a reality yet, why do we still must pay for (most of the time and places) shitty internet connection.

Why haven't big companies come up with a way to give out free internet to users as a platform for ads to be placed, honestly it feels like Im paying to get access to get bombarded with ads whenever I try to access any website nowadays.

A future with interconected humans and an advanced AGI optimizing everything needs to at least have a way of public internet globally, just like radio was and has been for decades.

Also paid internet access doesn't need to disappear either, just make a plan with fast access and no ads or something, just don't understand it. We have old infrastructure just being shut down by ISP's (edge, 2G, copper, etc) that could be useful enough to load basic web pages or instant messaging. It is like the same situation with food, we currently produce enough food to end world hunger but somehow humanity just doesn't want to distribute it. Just a tought that's been bugging me lately when I think of the singularity.

How would you make sure we all get global free internet access? What are your thoughts? I'd love to read you.

Original Title: Will AGI or ASI be able to enhance cognition in humans, get rid of neurological disorders, get rid of mental health disorders and make humans living today immortal? What year would it take for all of these to be solved? One example is it may take the year 2025 or 2030 or even 2035 or after that.

I made a similar post but its been a while since I made a post on here. Same as what the title says. This was on my mind. Let me know what you guys' think please as I was thinking this question for a while. I am 27 by the way as well.

LK-99 was all the rage for the past few weeks, but now it looks like it was nothing but hype.

Granny told Pawpaw…

“Don’t matter how cute that calf is,

Don’t matter how fun it is to play,

He’s just little a baby now,

but he’s learnin’ from you what to do

with humans every day…”

But Pawpaw was havin’ so much fun,

a’ wrasslin’ him to the ground…

And that calf, he’d come a runnin’

Every time Pawpaw was around…

Bet you can guess how this story ends

Cause ya’ll are shorely smart…

Pawpaw had to sell that bull,

Though it broke his big ole heart

Now use that big ole brain of yours

to ponder upon on this

What’dya think might happen when

ya’ll keep a’ play wrasslin’ with this new intelligence?

Where you gunna sell it when it grows up fully to,

A big ole ‘playful’, omnipresent dig-i-ital bull…?

I thought you all might be interested in this poem I wrote thinking about some of the topics you tend to discuss here.

I remember being in high school when this came out, and it was the first time I had ever heard about terms like, “AGI”, and, “ASI”.

I heard someone argue that a GTA style FDVR would be morally bad because the characters in the stimulation would be sentient, though I think its more likely a FDVR would simply just manipulate your senses thats all - a coded NPC would still be a coded NPC, only rendered by an implant in your visual cortex. That comment was upvoted by a lot of people.

Two people that work in AI (Generative AI to be specific), are saying that in a few weeks so much is gonna change with LLMs, do we have any idea what this could be?

My guess is multi modal ability, but maybe it could me something else?

I'm from a small-ish country where people speak english pretty well, and the main reason is that we simply can't produce enough media ourselves, so we look at a lot of english media. There's literally reports of children in kindergarten speaking english because their parents gave them an ipad with youtube lol.

But I can imagine, soon the default settings on smartphones will be to translate everything, be it text, audio, or even video, where they will edit the lips automatically to match the translation (which is of course, spoken with the voice of the original person).

whats your thoughts on this? Personally, language preservation is something im actually excited about. If a language is dying, being able to watch all your series and even tiktok in it would be the best thing that can happen.

Unusually upbeat video from Sabine Hossenfelder on Moore's Law. Thought you guys might want to see - she goes into quite a bit of detail on the different technologies that are in production or at the cutting edge of lab research:

There has never been a more exciting and promising time to get into AI development. Forbes reports that job listings for ChatGPT-related positions increased 21 times since last November:

They need both prompt engineers and programmers. But because of Copilot and other advances in AI programming they are looking for people with some basic programming skills but who mainly excel in advanced critical analysis and reasoning skills.

They basically need people who know how to think so for people with IQs above 130, (in the genius range) this could be a dream career. But really it's not so much about IQ as it is about the ability to think rather than just mostly learn and remember. In fact programming courses must already be teaching this brand new kind of prompt engineering and programming.

I imagine that computer programming instruction is going through very rapid evolution right now as teaching fundamental programming skills more and more gives way to teaching how to most quickly and intelligently prompt AIs to do whatever programming is needed.

If incumbent programming schools are not changing fast enough they risk losing a substantial market share to startups that begin teaching much more marketable skills.

Many businesses today want to start using AIs but they don't know how to go about it. Computer programmers and prompt engineers who can explain all of this to them have a ready and rapidly growing job market.

Yeah there could never be a better time to get into computer programming!
