So a few family members use Google for mobile payment. They are aware of the privacy implications but are there any good alternatives? PayPal is just as bad and any other alternatives I found are crypto.

That's true, I'll keep it in mind :)

That's totally understandable, I'm currently juggling the two. I also want to add that Signal is actually trustworthy. The FBI subpoenaed all info of a given user and they basically just gave the phone number and last login date, that's it. Mental Outlaw made a video about it

You may want to check out Element. It's privacy-respecting free and open source software. It's also part of the fediverse. If you check your Lemmy account settings you can see a field called “Matrix”. Element also uses Matrix so you can even link it to your Lemmy account if you want to. I've been using it for quite some time now and it's very usable! Discord's voice channels are called “video rooms” in Element and are still in beta, though. You can easily activate and use them but they aren't quite there yet. Still, worth a shot. Everything is E2EE encrypted

We don't even have karma here, sorry :(

Lots of people actually use Lemmy, Kbin and similar platforms as alternatives to Reddit and other traditional social media. It's great that you're open to donating/hosting, that's exactly the kind of person we need imo. I simply pointed out that too many people that are opposed to donating/hosting or simply don't know the necessity of it could become problematic. Basically encouraging people to help make the Fediverse even greater. I also stated that it will probably be fine, just as Mastodon is doing fine.

I checked out your cooking content and it's actually quite interesting! Keep up the good content :)

That is a fair point, I'll keep that in mind going forward, thank you

Edit: I do want to add that skimming the title and voting based off of that is not how it should work. I would at least scroll to the conclusion, even though this article admittedly doesn't really have one. Going forward I will make a clearly marked conclusion and summarize my pov better in the title to avoid confusion.

sounds like a normal Saturday, nothing to worry about

We meet again :) And we even agree on this, too! Yeah, it's madness. I know that it's a stereo type that people don't read TOS, T&C and privacy policies but when you have a product like Discord that is free one should realize that something's not right.

Glad we cleared this up :) Have an awesome night!

The Fediverse isn't confusing imo. I don't think it's overhyped at all, either. “Cool” doesn't even begin to describe how awesome all this is. Seeing the numbers go up and up, more people joining, making this a nice place fills my heart with joy. I just don't see it becoming a mainstream thing even though many people probably want it to be mainstream.

I would love to say this post was dead-wrong in a couple of years but only time will tell.

There actually are businesses, schools and more using Discord for their communications. Some people also use it as their primary messaging app and that really shouldn't be the case. For anything nonsensitive, it's not that big a deal. I would still recommend checking out privacy respecting alternatives like the end-to-end encrypted client Element that uses the Matrix protocol

Thought you were gonna rickroll me but this actually put a smile on my face. Thank you, kind stranger :)

Discord is not meant to be a private messenger. And you really shouldn't use it as one!

I don't think the Fediverse will become mainstream. But I'm actually happy about that. And so should you.
