Honestly I just point it out because even if you take the economic news absent the broader consequences it's not "good" news- having your primary export be raw materials isn't really what people think of advanced economies doing.
It takes capital investment to build capacity, and that investment is not happening inside the US, in my opinion it's because it's more profitable to either do stock buybacks or build somewhere else.
I usually point out whenever this comes up that it's crude oil exports, US refinery capacity has barely changed, it's all getting exported to be refined elsewhere. Remind me again how Russia was the gas station masquerading as a country?
