On non-macOS Apple devices, you’re stuck with the App Store because Apple doesn’t allow competing storefronts.
Apple is third in the world by revenue in gaming (behind Tencent and Sony, and ahead of Microsoft), without being a developer or publisher. This is all thanks to the combination of its 30% cut and lack of competition.

On the other hand, as of June 2023, general dev accounts have become free. They only cost 100 USD when you want to submit apps to the App Store. It’s still a hassle, compared to Android, but it’s not as bad anymore.
Die Hackmischung ist beispielsweise in Sachsen praktisch alternativlos. Vor 3–4 Jahren hat der Hähnchenspieß angefangen, sich langsam breit zu machen, aber selbst die hippesten Gemüsedönerbuden in Leipzig haben immer noch – und teilweise ausschließlich – den billigen Brät-Spieß.
