I would like to agree but considering gendered harassment is historically underreported it just becomes a bean counting measure to not actually provide remedy (of which I think this one should be temporary but the fact that it's being implemented is absolutely an indictment of both society and how little they think of men that they can't believe men cannot self police themselves or how disinterested they are to change norms that encourages this to happen, especially if this fits into their worldview that men and women must be segregated).

Damn a trend I accidentally stumbled into lol

There was this really hefty book, 'La Rosalie and other love songs', by Saidah Rastam, that went into this super extensively. I think it was made possible thanks to a Khazanah grant, and formed the basis of a stage show. I wish it could become a regular sort of show, like annually - it was an enjoyable presentation. But the book is where it's at - hella heavy too, lol.

It's actually a good move, economically speaking in the bigger picture. No doubt Singapore's much more developed economy with its value-added industrial sectors was going to zoom straight ahead as soon as they're no longer committed to be in the federation and with that, the attendant need to contribute to the development budget of the rest of Malaysia. But because of that, it would have been a long-term economic suicide (see Brunei) to keep hitching your wagon to it. We're definitely slower, no doubt, and corruption and inefficiencies don't help. But a more expensive currency (that the central bank has agreed to lose some control over so that's your monetary policy levers handicapped) with not even basic manufacturing to be competitive, and with that no budget to develop (except of course overvaluing fossil fuel earnings capacity thereby developing only that ecosystem as priority)? Ayyyyy that's an even worse future.

ETA: there was no expectation we'd "leave them in the dust". In fact it was more like, we couldn't afford the projected inflationary pressures from a strengthening Singaporean dollar.

(my personal opinion on the impact of the agreement which is still ongoing to the less-developed country: https://mefi.social/@cendawanita/110982575930231563)

From the link:
In Singapore and beyond, there has been a quickening of interest in the anticolonial and socialist struggle of the 50s and 60s after the publications of archival research by historian PJ Thum and of the Eisner-winning graphic novel The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye by Sonny Liew, among other works. The undisputed leader of this historical struggle was the student activist, trade unionist, and politician Lim Chin Siong (LCS), who organised the largest social movement in Singapore to fight for democracy, freedom, and justice. Although this movement ultimately failed, it opens a window into an alternative future for Singapore, Malaysia, and the rest of Asia—a window that creative writers with their imaginative powers can help us look at and through.

Deadline for submissions is 1 December 2023. There are also introductory material on Lim Chin Siong himself and the historical context he was in.

Unfortunately their twitter thread about Lim is not mirrored anywhere else, but if you like, here's the thread

A man arrested last November, shortly after he sounded the alarm that inflammatory content was being posted on TikTok, is pleading with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for help.

Zulfadzli Halim is seeking the country’s top leader’s assistance in getting an update on his case, saying that the authorities have reportedly stonewalled him.

His story began on Nov 21 last year, two days after the 15th general election.

Zulfadzli (above) had tweeted about his discovery and concerns that hate speech and racially motivated provocative content - including threats of a repeat of the May 13, 1969 riots - were being posted on the social media platform.

Screenshots and screen recordings taken by him and other netizens led to the discovery that at least three of the provocative content on TikTok had been paid for.

However, in a twist of events, it was Zulfadzli that police acted against, probing him under the Sedition Act - allegedly for insulting the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

He has denied doing such an act and contests that police have not been able to pinpoint which of his tweets did so either.

He was released three days later.

SHAH ALAM: Menteri Besar Selangor Amirudin Shari menggalas lima portfolio utama negeri, termasuk pembangunan tanah & sumber alam; serta kewangan & tindakan ekonomi.

Beliau turut memegang portfolio pemodenan pentadbiran & pendigitalan kerajaan; komunikasi strategik; serta pendidikan & pembangunan modal insan.

This is very Melayu Singapore/KL imo and I wonder how many of these have broke containment into your everyday lingo?

got this in my Kini Morning Brief Email.

Summary: Perak MB says there are plans to trigger by-elections in at least four seats by convincing those ADUNs to defect to PN - no other details given.

[...] Saarani after a meeting with 33 Perak legislative assembly government members at the Impiana Hotel in Ipoh, Perak yesterday, according to Sinar Harian.

"We are gathered today because we don't want suspicion among the 33 assemblypersons and ensure their loyalty to the state government."

The Perak legislative assembly has 59 members, with 26 seats held by the opposition. They must win at least four more seats through by-elections to govern the state.

Like most states, Perak has enacted laws that will trigger a by-election if an incumbent lawmaker defects.

Got linked to this mainly because berdiskusi over how Singaporeans spell out Malay words and it's essentially because they're localized into teochew and then modern generation use it in romanized spelling instead of restoring the Malay spelling the way Malaysians would tend to do it. Still looking for an explanation for tombalek tho.

Since this the café comm after all 😂

IDK if I'd ever consider this as a routine purchase but looks like fun esp if you're having a get together and want to play masak2

The Home Ministry raided and conducted a seizure at the Toko Buku Rakyat bookstore owned by local author Benz Ali at Wisma Central, Kuala Lumpur, earlier today.

When contacted, Benz confirmed the incident and expressed his disappointment with the confiscation.

“You can’t do this. What’s more, under the leadership of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. This is just like the previous BN government.

“It’s your government, yet you can’t even control the Home Ministry. I sell books that are not listed in the banned book list.
