There are quite a few competitors in retail banking, like EQ Bank, Alterna Bank, motus, ....

But none of them have achieved a critical size IMO, especially when compared to WS.

This is "frowned upon", but some mortgage lenders can work with that, although they will require extensive documentation, proof of income, and may also require other proof (letters from your landlord, from your insurance company, .... showing that you've been paying on time). You'll also probably have a higher rate. If you've been banking with your bank for sometime, I'd recommend you start here, otherwise, a good mortgage broker (not all of them will know how to deal with that) may help.

FYI, while you don't have a credit card, some other companies do report to credit bureaus, for example some utilities, cellphone or internet providers. It may be worth it to check if you have a credit file with Transunion and Equifax: you can either request your credit for free on their website (warning: their process is convoluted so they'll try to sell you their service quite a few times) or through apps like Borrowell and Credit Karma.

Regardless, having a good credit history makes things simpler by standardizing them.

Really a great episode ! Mark is also a great addition to the PWL Team, I can't wait to hear him on the podcast.

I see 3 points you should have in mind :

• you don't get a guaranteed rate, the rate could go up or down at any time

• cash ETF aren't insured, so even though limited, counter party risk exists (ETF manager or deposit bank failure)

OSFI is currently reviewing these ETF because banks complained about them, so things may evolve for them in the next few months

home ownership?

I come from a family of renters: both my mother and father (separated) rented all their working life, and bought a home when their retirement came, because they decided to move to a place where real estate was cheaper. It didn't prevent them to have a great life.

about retirement

Are you an employee? If you are, you're already contributing to your retirement through CPP, so at least part of your needs are already taken care of. Is that sufficient? Probably not, but it'll still be there later when you need it.

I went through kind of the same situation a few years ago: my wife had a baby and wasn't eligible for EI after the birth, and then she decided to change career, so was back to studying for a while. It was hard, and quite tight, and we had to cut quite a bit on spending for a few years and didn't save much, but it was well worth it: she's now in a better situation she could have been before, and we organised our lives to live frugally enough to catch-up on our savings, so we now are in a good enough situation.

Do you have to live tighter now to save more? Maybe: you can run the math and decide if there are some things you can cut, reduce or replace without affecting your life too much.

But in the end, that's ok not to save if you're too tight. Just do your best to save what you can and to catch-up when you can!

Pourquoi ? Qu'est ce qui empêche le cas échéant de prendre d'autres moyens de transport ?

WS is still a very small player in this field, so I'm unsure it will elicit any reaction from bigger players.

[-] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

Yes, but you have no guarantee that you'll keep this rate for one year with CASH.

35M, 35F, kids

We currently hold a significant amount of CASH.TO as we are moving from saving our money in HISA to investing it : it represents around half of our current holdings, and is decreasing every month at a pace we are confortable with.

Excluding CASH, we have 2 model portfolios :

• Registered accounts, based on XEQT with reduced exposure to Canada: •• 60% XUU •• 25% XEF •• 10% XEC •• 5% XIC

• Non registered accounts, based on registered accounts with a tilt toward Fama and French factors: •• 75% of portfolio is based on the model of the registered accounts •• 17% AVUV •• 8% AVDV

Those portfolios are balanced with new money or if they drift significantly (ie ±10%) from target.

Long term, we plan to keep this investment strategy based on market capitalization.
